How do you know they are 2-3 weeks early? Don't rely on anecdotal evidence... seek out the truth.
Paper mentions three metrics you should use. Coloration of pistils, density of buds and trichomes. It also talks about when THC% is maximized during the process... Surprise! it's not when you get the best yield. So, it really does come down to personal preference about these 2 factors... as opposed to some black and white 3-day window that people act like nazis about when there is any deviation from the groupthink conclusions.
on a normal roughly 9 week variety, your peak thc levels, measured as % of mass, is actually a week or two before most people harvest. You do miss out on extra yield, but the thc production does not keep in step that last week or two. After senescence starts, production drops. If quality is judged by potency, it is of higher quality before most people believe to be best harvest date.
Another interesting tidbit from this research -- more intense light does not increase THC%, but it does increase yield, of course (ceteris paribus)
so, genetics is roughly 100% of the potency (excludes incompetence in other areas of concern)... light is still massively important, but often times we think a better light will increase quality, but it really only increases mass, and your plant's genetics is the ceiling on quality.
a lot of stuff people have believed since the 70s in regard to growing marijuana is having a rude awekening as we apply the scientific method in controlled experiments. Pppl still die by massively boosting P/K in bloom even though they keep burning the shit out of their canopies, lol.
Flushing, for example, is stupid and all the reasons stated are repeatedly proven as untrue -- at which point they make up some new shit that was never mentioned before, because why would they adhere to something that isn't true for decades? are they stupid? Not neccessarily, as we all behave like this at some point in our lives when we come a realization that a long-held belief is wrong. some of us learn from it, some doomed to repeat it. even if aware, you still default to the bad behaviour, cause it is part of the human condition. LOL.. the people are not stupid, but their behaviour is when it contradicts reality.
It will take 15+ years before not flushing is accepted by the "mob" as true despite the fact we are technologically capable to measure these things and not guess or apply some bro-science. Same dynamic with anti-intellectuals, anti-vaccers, religious folks etc.... it's not about facts.. it's about their egos not allowing their beliefs or perceptions to be criticized. It is personal to them instead of a simple matter of learning the truth, adjusting accordingly, and movinng on.
Better knowledge should not illicit fear or insecurity, but it does almost universally with people.
