what determines phenotypes

Does phenotype express themselves after they broke soil? Does it depend on the environment or genetic content? Is it the expression of the genetic content, determined by the environment? I know I can ask google, but I want to know what real growers think and know.

From the best cannabis book ever - "Marijuana Botany" by Robert Connell Clarke........ GENOTYPE - combination of genes present on chromosones in the nucleus of each cell, which through environmental influences determines the outwardly observable phenotype. PHENOTYPE - outwardly measurable characteristics of an organism determined by the interaction of the individual genotype AND the environment. Therefore, my interpretation is that phenotype is the environmental expression of a plants genotype. So yes, phenotype expresses itself after the seed breaks the soil and "reacts" to its environment. Hope this helps, Organoman.

There many phenos from packs of beans these days most aren’t tested and except buyer to do pheno hunt for them….but sometimes one does find unique phenos like the GMO strain came from a pack of sour cookies and was re named

From what I can remember phenotypes are the differences you can see and pick out based off of environmental factors. Granted I don't think its that simplified. but its a good base understanding. Its also combined with something else to for the overall title of "genetics" 50/50 kinda thing. The other half is the stuff that can't be observed with the eye and is more internal regardless of environmental triggers... I think? No idea if both of these sides can have passive and dominate traits. Some guy wrote a book about pea shoots back in the day and it goes over this in detail. and its a solid cornerstone in genetics. Funny to see how the stuff we learn about cannabis as its presented to us can be transferred to other things and creates a better understanding of everything. Happy Growing!

And just to add on.. a lot of times breeders or banks might say “there’s two phenos, a sweeter indica type structure and the other has a more sativa taller structure “ or something.. This just means those two are a common type of Pheno that pops up from that strain consistently

So my opinion is that phenotypes are the unique expression of the two parents.. so if you breed two plants and get 1000 seeds.. technically you’d have 1000 phenotypes.. that said, usually you’ll see some distinct similarities between those 1000 if you popped all those... like half a dozen or so quite similar phenos. I like to relate it to humans and having children. That’s a good way to look at it. You have two parents that have tons of kids.. you’ll have each a unique expression of those parents genes.. some look very similar and some will be outliers and display a handful of recessive genes you didn’t expect. Now on to environment.. yes it plays a role in the expression of those genetics.. it’s again very similar to humans.. you have a genetic make up but the way they’re raised and fed and all that contributes to how they will develop. So it’s a combination of both of pure genetics and environment.. I’d probably say it’s more genetic than environment - but you can definitely get quite the difference of expressions by tampering with environment and feeds and everything that follows after germination. The seed has a genetic set of unique instructions from the parents.. the way those instructions manifest in the grow is determined by the conditions/environment etc..

A pheno type is just a seed of the same strain, but from a different plant. You have two, say superskunk seeds. One seed can be from one plant the other from a different plant but the same strain. It's a different pheno
