When to transplant seedling

Tropicalstorm
Tropicalstormstarted grow question 3 years ago
Hi! My seedling's on a 500 ml cup with peat, perlite and vermiculite. It's been 6 days and I still can't see any roots (transparent cup). When is best to transplant to a bigger vase? Should I wait for roots to appear?

You've got quite a while before you'll need to transplant... you can actually wait until it's almost root bound in there! Since you haven't linked this with a diary, I'm not sure if this is a photoperiod or an auto - but beware if it IS an auto, they really hate being disturbed and should always be started in the pot they're going to finish in... but if you handle it really, really gently, all should be well. Good luck!

Now is the time to transplant into a bigger pot man , last thing you want is a root bound seedling that never reaches her full potential also you need to get her out of the clear cup as plant roots don’t like being exposed to light . It’s easy to transplant without causing damage , use your cup to push an indent into the new pot so it’s a perfect fit but stay away from clear pots . Not sure if you’ve got holes in the cup but you need to make sure your containers drain really well so it dries out a bit and those roots grow while looking for food . In saying that she looks nice n healthy , just needs a fresh start .

i wait until the root system is substantial enough that the substrate won't just fall apart as i transplant. i like a little layer of perlite or similar at bottom of cup... then gently whisk it away as you transplant. this gives a bunch of root tips that will quickly spread out in right direction (down and out). I almost never see transplantn shock.. not even sure i've ever seen transplant shock before. the risk of shock vs the perils of properly watering a huge pot of substrate with a tiny plant... flip a coin, imho. whichever you prefer to handle for autos.
