watering 20 gallon pot

I am concerned that I am not seeing any run off from watering since I put the plants into 20 gallon pots. They seem to be growing fine and I only put about 1L of water daily and the pots go dry. Should I increase my water volume until I see run off and decrease frequency?

You want to see run off with synthetic bottled nutrients. The salts needs to run off and you need to make sure the root zone goes thru a full wet dry cycle to stimulate roots to reach out. If your growing organically with dry amendments then I don’t really recommend run off is important. But trying to keep the soil constantly damp would be your goal to keep the microbial life alive. It dies if you dry out completely. Synthetic nute salts are supposed to be washed out eventually. Organic is not.

I use19L (5 gallon) fabric pots and apply about 1.5 - 2 liters of water per day. It is enough to wet all the soil and make the sides and bottom of the pot feel damp but I do not get runoff. I have to water 2L per day two days in a row to get a small amount of runoff or water more. 1L in a 20 gallon pot is likely not enough.

A proper wet /dry cycle is crucial assuming you’re in soil.. it takes some time to learn it and get it down, but personally I would let it dry out well then water til there’s a little run off so you know it’s soaked, then repeat.. let it get dry before watering again

hey there Dusk, you're actually slightly overwatering as it is. that's because watering everyday means there will be some part in the middle of the pot that will hold water continuously . yoou really do want to let the pot dry. Right now you're seeing puffy space between the veins of the leafs and downward pointing tips on some of the leafs. that's your tell right there. the normal thing to do is follow a strict wet dry cycle of several days by carefully watering the whole pot , and therefore watering more than what you're doing, but much less often because of the bigger pot. something like 3 or 4 Liters every 4 days, sometimes three. You're doing perfectly good as it is, but be aware so that more severe problems dont creep up on you. Hope this helps ! 🚀

You're not getting any runoff because you're not giving it enough to run off! 1 liter in a 20 gallon pot?! At 7 weeks, I'm giving my Glueberries 1/2-3/4 gallon every other day and they're in 3 gallon pots... I don't get any runoff either unless I'm watering and I give them 1 to 1-1/2 gallons... I'm thinking your plants are pretty dry! I would definitely give them more water - and you'll definitely NOT need to water them every day... you want the water and the nutes you give them to reach the furthest bit of roots - so you'll be increasing your root structure this way, too. Getting runoff is important because it helps clear out the soil and prevents a lockout from happening... It doesn't have to be much - 20% or so is good. Good luck!
