I always start my seeds in a glass of water which I cover completely so it's all dark inside and put the glass somewhere warm. I check on them in about 24 hours and, if they're still floating, tap on them to see if they will sink. If they do, it means the seed casing has cracked and it can be put right into the substrate you're going to be growing in. Planting it either pointy-end down or on it's side is best for germination and planting it shallow is better than planting it deep... I don't bother with the paper towel step that many growers use because a) I find it a rather useless and unnecessary step and b) there's a higher risk that it will dry out or you will damage the tap root when transferring it from the paper towel to the substrate... but you do what you feel is right for you!
