The goal is to avoid root binding as pictured in the below link:

Once this happens, plant's vigor never quite returns to 100%. I would transplant into fabric pot. Instead of binding, the root tip pushes through the fabric (below pic). The tip dies and stops growing when light hits them. Energy will then go to another part of root system for growth.

After a harvest, I usually peel the fabric pots back. Zero root binding.
