you want the pot's size to fit the intended size of your plant -- and that's directly related to how long it is in that pot. 'they' usually say 1gallon per month of growth.
when done with a grow examine your substrate. pullt it out. is there a shit ton of roots wrapped around? up and down pot, not just at very bottom, though that'd be cutting it close and if it sits in its own piss (runoff) alot, it would be a higher risk of causing a problem with all that coiled up root mass sopping wet for long periods of time.
if you got a ton of substaret around sides with very little root growth, could probably go down a size and see how that goes.
look at size of rootball.. should have plenty of room around it. Substrate isn't usually terribly expensive, so a little extra is a good thing to shoot for.
in general you need more volume of soil than soilless substrate over same period of time / all other factors the same.
fabric pots or this fancy expensive air pots? whatever they are called will mitigate this quite a bit with air pruning, but even so you should really match size of pot to length/intended size of plant
10 days before flower i'm in 5 gals slightly underfilled of 70/30 coco/perlite for ~100day grow cycle. it's probably more volume than i need, even so i need nearly daily irrigations toward the end of grow. ~200g plants. i have some root mass at bottom but usually not coiled in any crazy way.. bet some have a minor amount though.. there's variation of course.
