safest -- wait for pot to get light (weight) and then re-irrigate... always saturate entire substrate... you dont pick volume of water.. pot size and what constitutes your substrate dictate how much is needed.
soil -minimal runoff so you don't waste amendments in soil
soilless -- 10% minimum runoff to ensure concentration remains in happy zone. if religious about this, you never have to worry.
more frequent irrigations are an option for a well-sized plant for the pot it is in and a substrate with excelent drainage qualities.. if the plant cannot drink enough of the water fast enough, then you should not try frequent irrigations (end up with root rot, otherwise). This is more for a soilless context because most soils aren't going to have enough drainage / o2 penetration, but if oyu havae enough perlite, can do a version of this that would work.
i'd suggest getting the safer / basic way down first.. then when you try something more advanced you have a baseline to compare -- is it worth it? did it imrove resultts? with no baseline it is left up to the ego to decide...
