May 13: planted out into 7 gallon grow bag. Low temps around 4 C now so past risk of frost for sure now. 🤞
This sodium rich well water is a nightmare. I’ve been delayed getting the water hardener started but the plants are screaming for calcium. Drove an hour each way to the nearest hydro store to buy a big jug of Csl-Mag. Didn’t want to have to do this as it’s a super expensive option compared to the water hardener but it will have to do for now.
All the cation exchange capacity in the soil is tied up with sodium from the well water, so I did double the recommended dose of Cal-Mag to get some calcium into the system. That should help and I’ll continue to use Cal-Mag until a cheaper fix is sorted out.
Barley sprouted seed tea was ready tonight so I did that with the Cal-Mag booster. Everybody got a good soaking.
May 19: cold last night at 0 C. Plants were covered and are okay. Foliar spray at 11 am LAB, FPJ, soap and silicate.
May 22: weed FPJ at 1 mL/L.
May 23: LAB only foliar in evening.
June 6: some sort of bug seems to be eating some of the leaves. Plant is progressing but not exactly thriving.
Some Mega Crop as a foliar this afternoon cuz my plants seem to need a bit of N. Watered in evening with Mega Crop, and will do a LAB foliar spray tonight.
June 14: she’s funny looking but bouncing back. After being topped one of the top two fan leafs had to be removed due to bug damage. In this pic she’s turning toward the morning sun.
June 15: thunderstorms yesterday and today.
June 16: took off second top fan leaf that was looking stressed.
June 20 and 22: full foliar at dusk.
This plant is still struggling but I have never seen the bugs that seem to be causing problems. Other plants around it are fine...
June 26: looking better.
This plant is finally looking half decent. Rough start but going good now.
July 1: still in historic heat wave. Forecast is 37 C today but “only” 30 C tomorrow.
July 3: heat wave is finally done.
July 7: Very tall and fast growing plant. She’ll need some more support during flowering so I’ll have to change to bigger bamboo stakes.
July 9: still growing at about 2-3 inches per day!
July 10: 3 inches in 1.5 days. Upgraded supports to three 6 foot poles tied together at top.
July 12: she’s slowing down...only 2 inches in about 30 hours
July 13: I thought it was slowing down but it grew another 3 inches in one day.
July 17: much cooler today only about 16 C today in part due to widespread smoke from wildfires that blocks the sun. Air quality index is at 10 out of 10 or just generally hazardous ☢️. This new summertime normal really sucks.
July 19: still not clear if this is a male or not. Still in quarantine until the flowers are more fully formed.
July 20: seems to be a straight male. I’ll use this for breeding but I’ll have to keep a close eye on it to keep from releasing pollen into the garden.
Apparently about 1% of feminized seeds come up as male, and the weather conditions have been very extreme (low of -3 C one night in May, and high of 37 C three days in a row in late June) which also seems to stress the plants into producing hermies or males. This plant would represent about 1% of my feminized seeds so that seems normal enough. I can make use of a Critical + auto male so I’m not fussed about it.
