Well, another crop is starting. Keeping it simpler this time with number of strains... only 3. Platunim Punch x Swabi Pakistani, aka Platinum Swabi Punch. A collaboration between In House Genetics and Mass Medical Strains... please, correct me if i am wrong. This is part of the #oneworldoneplanet exhibition on Instagram. Bringing attention to the importance of home grows and the future fight it has with corporatization and lobbyiest groups trying to maximize the most profits for the fewest of us. That last part i may have interjected a personal thought too, lol.
So, check out the hashtag #oneworldoneplanet on IG. There are various teams across several continents contributing -- Europe, South Africa, Canada, North America. This is not a competition, although i do feel motivated to take extra care with this grow.
I keep things simple and have great results. I'm sure if you look up the hashtag you can find all sorts of sophistications from a wide variety of growers, if my methods are a bit boring for you, or you prescribe more to the magical end of spectrum with organic products :P (couldn't resist) Kiddingn of course.. my greatest jealous is of ppl with a well-functioning living soil that only have to add water. That's f'n cool, but not what happens here => drain to waste and religious about maintaining a 10% runoff or more from each pot.. often more.
This is obviously a boring week, and that trend will continue for another month. However, the diary must start somewhere. I'm not taking 20 pictures of a simple, tiny plant with 2 serrated leaves and a couple cotyledons, so expect more of the same while it is boring.
I'll be using a fully dimmable 150w light for seedlings and early vege. Some diy lights will be used as the plants outgrow that footprint. They wil likely spend at least 5-7 days under the FC-4800 before 12/12 light schedule flip. The FC-4800 is flowering 4 plants right now and doing a wonderful job as expected. It will obviously flower these, too.
A note on quality of lights -- most lights nowadays give you an excellent spectrum for growing. You can split hairs about CCT, but most of it works well. Where you get the most return on investment with a more expensive light is efficacy. You also get less heat with increased efficacy, but in some cases you may want that heat, so i leave that in a grey area. No matter what, we all save money if we spend fewer watts while producing same number of photons per second. that's what you pay for. That's how you get your money back.. slowly per month saving on utility bill, ceteris paribus.... or grow more with same electricity costs -- your choice.
You also get increase longevity with higher quality lights, like the FC-4800. Those advertised 50-60k hours of use are only accurate when run at a similar watts per diode as the FC-4800. At 0.25watts/diode, you are up against diminishing returns. More diodes won't help at this point. Watts per diode values higher than this will not reach the same 50-60k hours of use before dimming to 90% of original intensity. They will not achieve the same efficacy. This is one way you can spot shady spec sheets. If yo do the math with the FC4800 and compare to Samsung's chip spectsheets etc etc.. it makes sense. When you look at cheaper lights advertising similar values, like 2.7-3.0umol/j range efficacy, you can see just how badly they are lying. If you ever see a umol/J >3 that isn't purely 6500k lm301 chips, it's a lie -- uuntil they come out with better technology than the LM301.
This is also how you can see there is no difference according to samsungs own information between the H and B version of LM301. The "D" version is different. It is a lower version of the same chip... for a person (me too) who lacks the vocabulary to say it more eloquently and precisely why, that's as best i can say it. "Spec sheet don't lie!" Just like "Ball don't lie" - rasheed wallace. You can convert lum/w to umol/j. it just takes a conversion i know nothing about. Since we have a the spectrum mapped out for various sources of light involved, it is possible though. these values are equal to each other when you do the math per bin... same tables, same graphs, simple changes of metrics used due to target markets invovled with the chips.
Alrighty... 1 picture.. but made up for it writing a book for the opening week.

Okay, so 1 week above ground. I've managed to not kill any so far. At this point it's pretty safe unless phenotype is no good. One or two look a bit smaller than the rest. No doom and gloom yet, but hopefully they grow out well.
Most have at least some hint of red/purple pigment on 2nd set of serrated leaves. Never had that trait before, so that'll be fun to see if it continues. Crazy thing.. a few of teh LA Peyote Kush also are displaying this trait.. First time and seeing it on 2 strains, randomly from my perspective as i don't seek this trait out specifically in any way shape or form.
At moment the FC-4800 is flowering 4 plants, so it obviously is not illuminating these plants, yet. They will be in the Mars 4x4 under a slightly larger light than currently within a week. I need to sanitize that tent as it had a load of pollen in it.. and still does at this exact moment for that matter.
Not all 5 plants will be highlighted throughout, necessarily. I grow extra plants so i can throw out any hint of a troublemaker. This ensures the area gets filled properly with less waste. Can't do that with $20 seeds, but should be fixing that problem soon, too.

14 days from breaking ground... This is part of the #oneworldoneplant exhibition on Instagram. It is not a competition but there are many teams accross the world.
Lost any early pigmentation, oh well. TBH, not really something I care about beyond it being a novelty. These have a lil droop. I have just applied some h2o2 + castile soap as a surfactant, so they may look a little off due to that? Anyway, the oily component gives a little protection against microbial growth, too.
I've been careful not to stunt these plants like i did on the last grow. The first vege week in diary of previous grow is 10 days from breaking ground. When i compared these, they are twice the size, So, i feel like the adjustment has been in the right direction. A couple plants stretched more than others, but none of these are in that category.

21 days from breaking ground... This is part of the #oneworldoneplant exhibition on Instagram. It is not a competition but there are many teams accross the world.
These pictures are taken immediately after transplant and a heavy irrigation. They are not in 1 gallon pots. They will have 1 more transplant, at least 7 days recovery, and then off to bloom phase they go. Nothing got stunted, so I'm happy with this run so far compared to last. Light was swapped out for a 240w to cover more square feet. It is running at 180w and 24" from plants. We'll see how they react and adjust.
Any isolated stetching, i'll move that plant to middle. If it is accross the board, i'll inch light a bit closer. It's a 2.8umol/J lamp, so it's a bit much for vegetative phase given 6" on center spacing of bars. If it were 8" i could run these full power and have a little more even spread of light. I have to reframe a couple of these 240w bad boys and make them proper for a 4x4 vege area.
Good color, decent growth... wish it were a bit faster. We'll see if the increased umol/s kicks them in their ass a bit.

*** at least one of these is not the plant listed. The pigmented one is definitely platinum swabi punch. i moved tallest plants to center, so at least 1 has moved from the original positions, which is what i photographed. this goes for the other 2 diaries, too. it is 'mostly' the right plants in the pictures, BWAhahah. I bet nobody could tell, though. This week only.**

26 days from breaking ground. This is a couple days early for week 4 of vege.
More than one still has a little exotic pigmentation, but the one in 2nd picture has the most. While this isn't important to me, i'll make sure to take pictures showing how it progresses, because I know some people really dig the exotic colors. Axillary growth is starting and the plant is nearly the size i want before topping.
I intend to have 8 primary colas per plant. I strip the lowest axillary growth. So, it will be topped above the 5th node. The axillary growth at top will be trained horizontally until the lower growth shares apical dominance. At which point, i'll let it grow vertically and through bending and 'training' i'll keep the apical dominance spread throghout the canopy.
Most anything below that point is going to be stripped heading into bloom phase in most contexts. When it no longer is responsible for much photosynthesis taking place, i can strip that stuff long before flower phase. I want all of the plants to be roughly 24" x 24" footprint. As there will be variation, i'll mix and match sizes as needed to properly fill space and keep good circulation between plants.

40 complete days from breaking ground as of this update. The pictures are from last night, so they show a plant after 39 full day/night cycles in vegetative phase. Next update will be half vege / half bloom week. The 'number of weeks' will stay consistent with total time invested.
So, a couple are retaining pigment, which is cool but irrelevant in grand scheme of things. A third has hint of unusual pigmentation but i did not bother giving a head shot to other plants.
I think i irrigated with some bunk water recently. Probably the cause of a funky leaf here or there and possibly why i am seeing some leaf-symtpoms I rarely see in vege phas. At end of last harvest i had mixed up 40gallons and then they stopped drinking... so that batch sat around a lot longer than normal -- it got a bit murky despite 2 aquarium powerheads churning it.
All better now, i hope. Gave a good scrub to the rez and upped the doseage a bit to combat the seemingly low N in more than a couple plants. Going to bump up again to 1.4ec next re-fill. I can't recall the last time i had nutrient symtpoms in leaves during vege phase... 6-8 weeks into bloom, sure i expect some imperfections, but this is weird in vege. If the rez was the cause, i should be fine from here on out. The roots were all pearly white and healthy for transplants through last use of potentially fouled water.
1 of 5 phenos is a lanky type that doesn't branch out as easily as the other 4. Going to push 45 vege days before flip. I have a schedule and that is as far as i can go. Could keep a couple extra plants if no diseases show up. May take some cuttings and toss a mother Platinum Gelato in there. Bet i could train that to cover 2 plants worth of space, lol.

53 total days and 8 long nights completed
I stripped these a bit late after 6 long nights. I already see preflowers which I hope is due to age of plants and not so much racing to bloom phase. I want at least 2 good weeks of stretch before vege growth ends... more would be fine too.
Upped ferts to full dose except for epsom salt, which totals a bit under 1.5EC. This quelled the creeping nitrogen deficiency in past weeks. I have some minor clawing on a couple plants in the room, so I may split the difference between what i started with and 2.4g. Might up the epsom. Possibly a slight sulfur deficiency in a few plants. See soem red streaks in trunks.
The grow lights make the leaves look paler than they are. New growth is a little light green but it fills in quickly. Rate of growth has been decent pre-dating flip to flower. I got these healthy just in time. Hoping they add at least a foot more before end of vege growth.

Well... even if the lights are 2" away, 2 of these plants jsut keep sretching and stretching and stretching like some sort of degenerate energizer bunny for weed growth. Another pheno stretches significantly, but nothing like the 2 most prominent in pictures above. Another 2 phenos are stockier, with 1 being a runt.
Just in case there's a flavor i like i took 6 more cuttings (2 each of what looked like best yielding pheno based on how well it is stacking up). This time i took it from the stockier, non-runt Platinum Swabi Punch. I took much larger clones and i think i'm going to continue that trend, if it works out well. These plants are slightly healthier today than when i took the first round 8 clones.
At 18 flower nights, these are not the fastest developing plant in the room, but it isn't too far behind. I don't expect any extravagently long bloom period with any plant in the room for that matter. While they were not 100% entering flower phase, they were trending well and as of now they are super healthy.
RH% is no longer bottoming out due to winter furnace use. Dehumidifier is keeping it at 55% at moment. Using this to control VPD relative to the uncontrolled, yet safe, temps in my room. These have been drinking close to 1 gallon per day, but with slightly higher RH, i've slowed it down a bit. I was worried i'd have a buildup of nutes with an excessively high VPD. It's still above recommendations, but the plants are super happy and i won't be turning on the AC in March, LOL -- Not at this latitude.
Sadly, none of the exotic pigments stuck around. I'm not sure if i'm going to snap the stems or let it play out. If it stretches beyond lights, again, i have no choice but to HST the top foot or more.

One of the stocky phenos blew up lately, but bud sites did not follow suit. So, it's just a sad looking plant. I don't really have good things to say about these plants at this point.. maybe, they will surprise me. Still early, and i've been surprised before. Nutes are 700-730some last few weeks. Some darker green leaves at bottom with slow progression, so i'm tapering off cal-nitrate slowly. (update) After last rez refill or two it's holding steady.

Feeling 5% better about the potential yield. One plant is a total pile of shit though, lol. It's lanky and has tiny buds. At least the ones in front (picture) stacked up a bit. I thined one plant out when i saw a bit of WPM. In the week since, this particular plant has remained mostly clean. i've removed a leaf or two since at most.
I doubt these will hold up on their own. Floppy, lanky, strecthc, weak limbs that can't hold any weight. I don't get why such traits persist when we can wield genetics in a more sophisticated way than what is currently employed by most breeders... not even attempting to work out alleles from resulting ratio of observed traits.. no punnet squares.. jsut re-using jargon and methods that are unsophisticated and not making use of existing knowledge in lieu of mthods employed in the 1800s or on an amish farm. Again, that's not about this specific breeder, but nearly all breeders.
existing knowledge is a tool you must choose to use... it's being severely underutilized in nearly all aspects of society, including seed chuckers, lol.

Here are some pictures of a floppy, stetchy, low yield plant with a citronella smell.. The buds are loose, too. Very airy... I threw out one of these because it had fast spreading mold. Nearly ruined my entire room. Everything got better after i tossed it. Another plant is a scraggily piece of shit. Another is small and scraggily. The "best" one out of five is pictured. It still has loose buds and it can't stand on its own. If you like this plant, that's fine... you can even say so. I'll stick to cause and effect to guide my opinion rather than act like a fan-boy of a particular breeder. they aren't jesus, lol. Mistakes happen and this is one of them.
Genetic depression or poor selection process to get some exotic pigment? Totally not worth it, lol. Grow large sample sizes, use less inbreeding techniques, etc etc... these traits are not inevitable.. they are the result of bad methods or caused by some pursuit of 'pretty colors,' lol. I don't want to sacrifice good traits with intrinsic value for superficial asthetics.
go check out the LA Peyote Kush to see what buds should look like and plants that don't fall faster than a prom dress under minimal weight of airy buds... even better, doesn't smell like citronella. Big heavy buds, trichoes, sturdy limbs, and doesn't require wasted time and effort. They don't cost 20-25 per seed, either. Thank god i didn't pay for these... would have severe buyer's remorse.
The "best" pheno is pictured, LOL. I have to make fun of these plants or i'll get angry about all the wasted space. This is for my own sanity. a pressure-release valve, you could say. These traits seem to be ubiquitous -- the uncontrolled stretch, long internodes and weak limbs... the smells are mostly lemon, which isn't what the description said.. had it been more honest about that, i wouldn't have signed up. i hate lemon... i fucking hate lemon flavored/smelling pot. hate. there are several aromas listed that have nothign to do with "lemon." i did look before i leaped, but can't do much if the info is shit - primarly to sell more of something than actually describe it accurately.

A one day early update for this completed week.
90 days from sprout // 46th day of bloom ongoing
I'll start with the positive... Despite throwing one plant out with mold issues, the remaining PSP have been resilient AF. While other plants are showing spots occasionally, these are remaining clear.
Unfortunately, my fears of larfy, airy buds are coming true. The buds are not dense. It's more like a loose conglomeration of foxtails, LOL. On top of that, 2 of the plants are fucking floppy mess. super high maintenance and larfy buds... not a good combination. if anyone feels this is being "negative" i'd argue that it is more about insecurity about criticism based on facts. If you don't mind the physical traits, than this is an option for you, but if you do care.. these are the people i'm trying to help... if you know you hate this sort of weak, floppy, low yield plant, then this is great information for you to avoid wasting your money. Most of them turned out like this in the oneworldoneplant exhibition. I don't know about the reg seeds - they were a different strain. Some people want to deny reality because they are fanboys of this breeder or that, but bottom line is this plant kinda sucks. It doesn't matter who made it... the physical traits and behaviour of the plant are the sole reason for this assessent.... none of the irrelevant factors are important to me.
The underside of leaves are turningn red, for those that like the superficial and may be interested... So, these might bust out some colors late in bloom? But, that wouldn't change my feelings on ROI. Each to their own on that... i think this drive to make exotic plants is ignoring more important traits... and we will all be wore off for it due to some superficial nonsense, but hey... how is that any different than most facets of life?
Update -- Some pics added for those interested in asthetics -- more power to you. A couple might turn purple or something along those red/blue lines. While still mild, the photos don't show as much as looking at it with the human eye, probably due to grow lights. The calyxes of a coule have a purple hue and undersides of leaves are turning reddish.

99th day from sprout // 54th day of bloom ongoing
Here are the 4 phenotypes i got.. i wasn't a lucky lotto winner with the more robust type, but i have 2 that will probably end up quite purple, though it has no causal effect on high or taste, so... ?!?
Two of them look like 10-weekers.. holy shit. So take whatever yield and multiply by "0.8" for a better idea of productivity, cuase it takes 25% more time to finish.
Two of them might finish in 9 weeks. Can live with 9 weeks... longer bloom plants are just a pita and absolutely ruin productivity... not wirth screwing up schedules for a diva plant, either.
Yield will be better than expected (then, reduced again once you factor time invested), but the buds will be larfy as expected. I've got donks on 1 plant, but they only look good on camera. The branches i HST'd have some girth to them. The shrinkage during drying is going to be huge. I took picutures of better-shaped colas with less foxtailing, if possible, but might see them in background.
Grow lights don't due the colors justice. Definitely a purple hue to 2 or 3 of the plants, with a couple being more obvious.

Super volatile flowering times plant-to-plant (60-90?). Pretty sure 2 of the 4 would have taken 2-4 more weeks than what i allowed. The other 2 weren't more than a week away, give or take (pictured). Extreme stretching to the point it is an overtly negative trait. Lots of foxtailing occurs. These are reasons why i went with 5/10.
This plant may be best outside where 2000PPFD can keep it from being a floppy mess. Definitely need a screen, scrog or 20' if garden wire and some stakes. Between the 1300ish umol/s fc4800 and some 1920umol/s 650watters, there's not much else i could do inside to prevent excessive stretching short of adding co2, controlling temp and RH while testing a slightly higher intensity.
It's sticky when breaking it up and fairly strong buzz. Nothing wrong there.
Spicy/floral/fragrant/incense type taste and smell. A bit unique but not my cup of tea. It's strong and the flavor is true... definitely a positive trait. My preference here has no impact on the 5/10.
Yield isn't as bad as i expected, but it's super larfy buds. While most harvests have some stratificaion in bud quality, this is a high proportion of larfy trash buds. I pruned to 2-3 nodes before flipping light schedule. It will require a second trimming to avoid all the larf or expect to use half your yield making bubble hash, rosin, etc. It's not a production plant... and it's not that special otherwise to outweight all the bad traits on this plant.
