Already a few weeks into the grow but posting things here after just discovering the site. Here's the breakdown to date: Tent conditions: - Consistent at 73 degrees with 55% humidity. - As seedlings, temp was at 78 degrees with 75% humidity. - Light was initially 36in above seedlings but has since been lowered to 24in above plants as canopies develop. - Currently utilizing just one fan blowing up from below the plants. I need to get at least one to mount above them but I haven't had any mold, pests, or similar issues develop yet (knock on wood). Northern Lights auto: - Planted the seed directly into the soil on 1/20 after the first two seeds failed to take off in a wet paper towel. Took 8 or 9 days for the seedling to sprout. - Significantly bushier leaves than the CJ, I've removed a few of the particularly wide fan leaves in an attempt to get more light to lower areas of the plant. The photos posted from this week show it after it bounced back from the defoliation with no issues though there are a couple other large fan leaves blocking light still. Considering removing them, but I'm going to hold off a few more weeks just to see what happens. - Initially added some LST but it didn't seem to do much in terms of evening out the canopy. I'm thinking that outside of a little defoliation, I'm going to let this one continue without additional LST just to see what happens. Candy Jack photoperiod: - Received as a clone and transplanted into the 5gal smart pot when it was at the same height as the Northern Lights. - Consistently lighter and narrower leaves than the NL. Wonder if it has something to do with the Ruderalis in the auto? Not sure but it doesn't seem to impact it and has taken well to the soil. - One LST tie-down currently in place. It's done a good job at evening out the canopy and will likely add another one if one part of the plants begins to rise above the rest. All in all, very happy with how things are progressing so far.

Three more large fan leaves removed from the Northern Lights auto hoping that more light is able to hit bud sides. Starting to see what I think are pistils on it ... could flowering be starting up? A bit more LST on the Candy Jack. Still planning on flipping to 12/12 as soon as the Northern Lights is definitely into flower. Added a carbon filter at the start of the exhaust..room was starting to smell *loud*. Can only imagine what the tent will smell like during flower. Thanks for visiting this week's log!

Flowering is officially underway. The auto (on the right) went into it near the end of last week so I went ahead and flipped to 12/12 to bring the photoperiod into flower as well. Defoliating the auto quite a bit and I'd like to do some LST on the photo as well to expose more of the bud sites. Wondering if that could be a bad idea given that it's in flower now? They're bushy little dudes and I don't want to stress them out but I'm hoping the bushiness doesn't impact yield too much. Blumats that I used for a bit ended up flooding the tent a bit...luckily I had risers and both pots weren't sitting in standing water. Back to manual watering for a bit.

Photoperiod is definitely flowering after flipping to 12/12 just over a week ago. I am seeing a bit of stress of some kind though with the yellowing of a few leaves. Water amount is fine, I think, along with the soil nutrients. Going to take off the yellow leaves and see what happens with the new growth. Northern Lights is still doing well. Bushy little dude for sure... Defoliated it more and tucked a few leaves to make sure bud sites were getting the most light possible.

Week 9 and both are flowering well. I continue to have an issue with some yellowing leaves on the photo-period that I'm not sure about. Watering schedule is usually daily or every other day and while the Northern Lights auto continues to do it's thing, it seems that the photo is stressed out or something. Regardless, it's still flowering well and ever since I've raised the lights a bit, has started to stretch a bit (something I wanted to happen). The NL is still pretty bushy and have been doing some light defoliation on a weekly basis to increase airflow and light access.

More defoliation and some nutrients (1tsp floramicro, 2tsp floragro, 3tsp florabloom). Also got a jewelers loop and a bonsai trimmer in the event nothing goes horribly wrong and I get to harvest in a few weeks. :)

Some more defoliation on both plants and a bit of LST on the Candy Jack. Thinking the Northern Lights will be ready for harvest in 2-3 weeks...maybe? Candy Jack is a bit behind due to the light schedule flip.

Trucking along. A bit more defoliation of the largest leaves just to try to get the plant to focus on the buds. Some FloraMicro/Gro/Bloom once or twice a week. Another one to two weeks on the Northern Lights based on the trichomes is my guess? Lots of clear but some cloudy ones appearing as well. Aiming for 20% amber before chop. Candy Jack is flowering nicely as well and the additional nutrients seemed to help out with the yellowing leaves issue that I was facing a few weeks ago though perhaps it was just the stress of flipping to 12/12?

Getting there. 1x/wk nutrients still. No amber trichomes yet on the NL..maybe another one or two weeks?

Another week down. I feel like I've been thinking "one more week" on the Northern Lights for a while yet here we are. Gotta be soon though, right?

Still flowering with no signs of amber trichomes yet. Maybe next week? A little bit of defoliation to increase airflow and some flora nutrients once a week.

So some trichomes are actually amber which means harvest is getting close! Oddly enough though, they're on the photoperiod Candy Jack strain and not on the auto Northern Lights that I always thought was going to be ready first.

Can't really report on the quality of the buds yet as they've just started drying but I definitely enjoy the aromas.

First grow officially in the books - now it's just a bit more waiting around while things dry. This plant was started as a seed and did great. Hoping those extremely fruity flavors stick around through the curing process!

Again, can't really comment on the buds or the high as they've just started drying but based on aromas alone I prefer the Northern Lights and its fruitiness over the gas/pine aromas I was getting out of this one.

This was started as a clone and was also my first go with photoperiods planting. Seeing how the plant navigated the new light schedule was interesting.

Congratulations on getting into growing, looks like you are doing a lot right. If you haven't already I recommend learning about VPD and how it relates to cannabis. https://cerescann.com/importance-of-measuring-vpd/ I also recommend a PAR meter and a thermal laser temp gun to get better temp reading from the top of your plants and get the max potential from your lights. Also if you're interested I am in the making of a YouTube tutorial series for all growers to utilize. You can find the link on my grow diaries page. Happy Growing!

@riplets, That is for sure! I am always more than willing to help anyone out. Once you get down to it, You are spending electrical costs & money on nutrients in the end with some small effort & basic understanding of the plant life cycle and how to manipulate certain genetic triggers within it, We can optimize our value from our grows and make sure we are making every penny count! Please do not ever hesitate to ask if you should have any questions!

@LegacyMarketFarm, I'll look into all of this! What I've quickly realized is this hobby can be an absolute rabbit hole and that there's always something else to learn and try.

@love_2_grow, Definitely the grow lights. Didn't see the growdiaries heads up about taking photos without the grow lights on to avoid the plants looking pale. While the photo is a slightly lighter green, they are both a very healthy green when the grow lights aren't washing them out. :) Fresh Fox Farms soil and pH balanced water..nutrients should be good. Stay tuned for next week's update and I'll include photos without the grow lights on.

@riplets, It is an exciting hobby for sure :) BTW your girls look quite pale. Maybe it is just the pics, or maybe you have a nutrition issue. It could be worth checking in to before it gets worse.

@Seedsman, Thank you! The Northern Lights from you guys is working very well. As mentioned in the description of this entry, 2 seeds failed to germinate in wet paper towels BUT they might've just been older. Not sure. The one however has picked up a lot of speed ever since it got a few leaves on it and is looking stronger by the day.
the end.
