Med_in_Tropic I am looking for another “pure CBD” with under 1% THC. For balance effects, I can mix “pure” CBD buds with normal THC and THCV buds.
Pure CBD Candy from Philosopher seeds is a Diesel derived plant. Seemed to be the industry standard these days.
This would be my phenotype sorting run from 10 seeds. Hope that I can get 2 plants to flowers well at the end.
First step is to look for plants that would grow outdoor in Thailand. These diesel plants can be light feeders. So, I’ll be looking for phenotype that has best tolerance level to fertilizers. I’ll start slow and ramp the fertilizer up. A few plants will die for the sake of science.
Then I would be looking for fruity smell rather than fuel smell. I had good CBD plants before but they just smell too bad. May be one plant can be mother for my future CBD clones.
On germination, I soaked seeds in hydrogen peroxide solution. Once the root tip (radicle) poked out, I planted them. Warned that CBD Pure Candy is a light feeder, I use media that did not have any fertilizer. I mixed 4 parts peat moss, 3 parts small pumice, 3 parts pearlites, and some mycorrhiza sands.
CBD Pure Candy popped out of seeds in a hurry and showed true leaves with four days. 9 out of 10 seedlings popped. And I am waiting for a week before feeding them with earth worm casting.
Meanwhile, I started preparing 7-liters pots for next month step. I put in 1 part earth worm casting, 1 part old soil, and 1 part chunky coconut husks. Also planted purslane in the pots. After a month, the purslane should start to established. The fertilizer weaken. And soil microbes would be well established. Then, CBD Rich Candy seedlings can go into these pots.
I only made 6 of these pots. And I only expect that 4 or 5 out of 10 seeds will start reasonably well. So I won’t need to make the same number of pot with soil for all the seeds.
Yes, even if the seeds popped, I plan to eliminate a slower plants after three weeks.
When I first started to grow, I would to keep them all. Seeds are expensive. However, I now think that the dearest resource is my time. And weak phenotypes are waste. So I pick only the strongest plants. Therefore, for price of five seeds, I would expect to get only one strong plant.
I would then try to clone from phenotypes that do well in Bangkok climate. And if the flowers are potent with nice smell, I can keep the clones going for a while. That is until I run out of space because I want to try new strains.
Note on the coconut husks:
Before using them, I soaked them in a pail of water for a couple of nights. This washes off natural tannin from the husk. Tannin that can hamper root growth. Soaking coconut husks under water also drown any beetle eggs on it. Otherwise I would get huge grubs feeding on the root around flowering time. This way, no insecticide chemical or microbes would be needed.

Med_in_Tropic Seedlings of CBD Pure Candy are weak. By the end of first week, only two seedlings out of ten seeds survived. Most of the seedlings died from stem rot, damping off.
Despite not feeding them, there was no fight against stem rot. This is pathetically weak. Without internal resistance to rot, I don’t think flowers would survive in hot and humid climate.
This is not exactly my primary growing season. I still have time to try other strains. And I shall be looking for other CBD strains in June.

Med_in_Tropic Apparently 40 C peak temperature was too much for CBD Rich Candy seedlings. I brought them in and nurse them in airconditioned room. They are in my computer grow case with 6,500 K 32 watts home lighting LED. The light intensity is only about 5,000 lux at 18 hours schedule.
With these mild conditions, the two remaining plants kept going. At this point, they are smaller and slower than other plants for sure. After three weeks, they look like one week old plants. Nonetheless, these are photoperiod. And all they need to recover is just time.
CBD Rich Candy were not bred for hot climate. There are local CBD strains. However, local stuffs are three meter tall with half CBD production. And they are not practical for small garden growing.
I still haven’t given them any more fertilizer during the past two weeks.
And with only tiniest amount of nutrients, conditions are not adequate. On the other hand, the weather outside is getting cooler with overcast sky and rain in the forecast. So, I am moving the seedlings to brave the coming rain outside. Should be the right time to condition the plants.
Actually, I do run my plants through the gauntlet on my phenotype sorting round. And I grow would only the survivors. If there are survivors. To be honest, keeping only the strongest genetics is my main secret for having healthy and productive plants.

Med_in_Tropic Week 4 – Transplanted to prepared pot outside in 38 C heat.
Soil was mixed a month ago. Sea purslane was planted during soil mixing. And it is thriving. There should be no excess fertilizer in the soil.
The smaller plant died in the heat after a day. There is only one left.
I am not interested in this CBD strain anymore. It is not suitable for very hot climate. I shall feed her with what ever I am doing for my other plants.

Med_in_Tropic Growing so slowly but seemed to have established.
Week 5; I just let her grow.
Week 6 – fed her with stimulant hormones. I was cloning other plants and used the hormone to stimulate root. So, I also fed these to CBD Rich Candy. The hormones were brassnolide, IAA, and BAP.
Also started to feed with weak solution of bat guano, molasses, seaweed, and humic acid.

Med_in_Tropic CBD Rich Candy
Yes, it had really been 13 weeks.
CBD Rich Candy hardly grew during the past two months. Main reason was 40 degree plus temperature. With seasonal rain, she temperatures dropped to 36degrees and she started to grow again.
I have topped her. Fill her pot with soil and earth worm casting mix.

Not pretty but surviving. Fed her with guano tea, molasses, and seaweed.
With cooler weather, CBD Rich Candy develops as a normal plant would.
New leaves are healthy.
Stems are too thin.
Roots poke out of the bottom with heathy fuzz.

CBD Rich Candy took transplanting well. May be its because her root and acoompanying purslane root are full of mycorrhizae. She stands well in pounding rain storm. As long as day temp is below 40 degrees C.
Pinch off the top’s one more round. Douse the plant with brassinolide and BAP to promote side branches.
Tried to shape her but ended up splitting the crotch. Wired that back. And the wound healed withing a few days.

Med_in_Tropic Bad week for ganja. Pounding rain every day. Fertilizing and insect control was not paractical. CBD Rich Candy survived but did not do well.
Side branches are developing well after topping. There are some sign of mite attack.
Spray CBD Rich Candy one more round with BAP to lengthen roots and promote side branches.
Split crotch did not heal after one week. Opened and close the wound back with scotch tape.
ฝนกระหน่ำทั้งอาทิตย์เลยให้ปุ๋ยกับพ่นเชื้อไม่ได้ ไรก็เริ่มมา

Med_in_Tropic Apparently, CBD Rich Candy needs higher amounts of magnesium. I gave her some Epsom salt dilute in water then top dress with earth worm casting. CBD Rich Candy starts to grow as she should. And root is developing very well for such small plant.
Crotch split did not heal. I shall need to be careful with staking and need to support during next transplant.
Rain is heavy this year and is expected to last longer than usual. I’ll keep her in veg until mid of October.

Med_in_Tropic Six months of vegging in 36-to-40-degree temperature produced small 120 cm plants. Once it is less hot, CBD Rich Candy improved. And she is now in her sixth flowering week.
Good amount of growth and stretch during pre-flowering phase. After six weeks of flowering, CBD Rich Candy flower looks decent. Flowers are putting out typical hempy high CBD type smell. And I don’t like this smell. On the other hand, my CBD would go into coconut oil for infusion any way. So, I am not concerned about taste and smell.
There should be three more weeks of flowering. So, far I fed CBD Rich Candy with earth worm casting, Epsom salt, and molasses. For the next couple of weeks, I would continue to feed her the same way with addition of more seaweed to fatten the buds a bit more.
CBD Rich Candy smell much better than pure CBD strains that I have grown. Typical CBD smell but with blend of fruity sweet smell when dried. Taste was spicy and bitter that turn to sweetness. Delicious and enjoyable smoke. There was a little high that came an hour after smoke. Buds color are dark and some branches had purple/black leaves.

Med_in_Tropic I grow CBD plant in tropical climate out door to make infused oil. CBD Rich Candy does not answer my jobs-to-be-done.
Big plus is that fantastically good smell. The buds are nice looking with beautiful purple leaves on some branches. Potency was good and THC level should be in legal compliance range.
CBD Rich Candy also does well in torrential rain, high fertilizer dose. There had been absolutely no issue with mite and insect. Pests usually avoid spicy plants. And there had been no mold.
Big negative for me is that CBD Rich Candy stop growing at temperature above 36 degrees. This is the norm for most part of the year in the tropic. Productivity is also small. It is true that I don’t pay for light. However, I could use same space and time to have two rounds of more obliging strains. For de-carbed infused oil, it does not matter much on how good is the taste. And the smell get burn off during de-carb cooking anyway.
So, my search for high CBD to grow in the tropic continues.

Med_in_Tropic Seven weeks into flowering, cola’s are looking nice. Trichome production is coming along. I think it will take a at least a couple more weeks before CBD Rich Candy will be ready. Continue to feed as normal until then. .
During the past week, I fed my plant with molasses, seaweed, Epsom salt, and top dress with fresh earth worm casting.
Lower leaves are turning dark purple. Temperature is 34 degrees C duing the day and 24 degree C in the early hours. Purpling is from response to Epsom salt and not from cold weather,
@Med_in_Tropic, ok let's see..
It for sure needs fabric pot for cooling.
Soil should have no new
organic ferts at that temp especially.
Shade only no hot reflective areas either.
Watering should only be done with ice cubes (im serious). That would save most of them.
😀😀😀😀😀😀 yes @GYOweed, master of the desert, years later is still better than never. 😆😆😆😆
I live in a big city with heat island. There are parts of Thailand that is a notch hotter.
@Med_in_Tropic, well holy damn i thought only parts China has super high temp and rh.
Well id tell you the fix but you dont listen to me anways until years later :(
