Apr 28: good potential with this cross from the 2021 season. Both parents did quite well last year so it will be interesting to see how these do this year.
Speaking of last year, it turns out my soil had way too much potassium and was also badly lacking in calcium and magnesium. Combined with way too much sodium in the water, it’s no wonder last year was a shitshow.
This year’s soil mix will be amended to include dolomite lime and gypsum, plus Humalite which is a mineral only mined here in Alberta that is 65% humic acid. Like Leonardite but formed in a fresh water setting, not salt water. Nearly coal, but apparently amazing growth properties. A 25 kg bag was 40 bucks Can. The local hydro sells a drum of Humic acid (this stuff in water) for about 1,300 dollars. Go figure. Will also use Gaia Green All Purpose and Power Bloom. Will still use some KNF techniques, but more nutrients in soil rather than mostly foliar as done last year (2021).
@Rangaku, best hobby ever. I haven’t liked most of my crosses so far but these were good and particularly the field plant. Have a few good possibilities for next year (if I can do this again next year…tough way to make a buck within the rules). Tough outdoor conditions here in spring and fall but sunny with 17 h daylight near the solstice means it can work great if things are timed properly with the right plants.
