Introduction - Week 04 Summary - Ensign’s log, personal entry, This week’s log was created in an effort to keep a somewhat complete grow reference for this attempt. This was therefore created well after I started my initial re-logging again (a good month or so). I never stopped trying to grow and continued to take photo logs as I failed/learned, just got too lazy/demotivated to write about them all (enjoyed the logging process, but was over logging about failure after failure). This log entry will focus mainly on one plant (the front one in the EarthBox). There are missing entries and details (although relevant) may not be exact. See Week 05 for the introductory week of this grow. Also check out my first grow (over 2 years ago) to learn how this journey to my first harvest all started. Now onto this week’s grow log! Ensign's log, stardate 99990.12, Overall growth was pretty good! This week I started bottom watering the EarthBox. Also increased the light intensity to 427PPFD. As far as feeding, this week was the start of veg week 1. Also top dressed and foliar sprayed. Had to give the cover crop a trimming too. [START OF WEEK 04] Day 01 - Monday - 05/23/22 - Total Days: 019 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 74.9Β°F - Humidity: 66.9% - VPD: 0.95kPa ----------------------------------- - [10:46]:She is starting to take off! --- Although growth is still looking a bit strange. - [22:50]: Started bottom watering by adding water to the reservoir. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water and poured it straight into the EarthBox's fill tube. --- Also gave her a misting of distilled water. Day 02 - Tuesday - 05/24/22 - Total Days: 020 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 75.7Β°F - Humidity: 65.4% - VPD: 1.02kPa ----------------------------------- - [10:12]: Wow! She’s getting perky! --- Growth is looking a lot better. - [17:24]: Evening check! --- Growth is looking good! - [17:40]: Water time. --- Filled a measuring cup with 2 cups of distilled water and poured it into the EarthBox’s fill tube. - [17:47]: Decided to increase the light intensity. --- The light intensity was at 247PPFD --- Lowered the light to increase the intensity to 427PPFD Day 03 - Wednesday - 05/25/22 - Total Days: 021 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 75.7Β°F - Humidity: 66.9% - VPD: 0.98kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:59]: Wow! Looking good! --- Growth is nice and perky! --- She is starting to gain noticeable height too. - [21:55]:Growth is really starting to take off! --- Her leaf color is starting to look greener too. Day 04 - Thursday - 05/26/22 - Total Days: 022 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 75.7Β°F - Humidity: 64.5% - VPD: 1.05kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:51]: Woah she’s getting taller! --- Growth is looking a lot more uniform too. - [17:16]: Growth is looking good! --- Cover crop is starting to really rage! - [17:22]: Time to feed! --- This week will be the first week of veg! --- Using reduced measurements based off of BAS feeding schedule. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 1/64tsp of the following: ----- Quillaja Saponaria Extract ----- Horticultural Aloe ----- Big 6 Micronutrients [+ Humic Acid] ---Added 1/32tsp of Mycrobe Complete --- Added 1/16tsp of Pure Protein Dry [Organic Fish Aminos] --- Added 1 drop of Bio-Catalyst Enzyme Elixer --- Mixed the solution and set it aside. - [17:38]: Gave the cover crop a trim. --- Using scissors, I chopped and dropped all the cover crop that was growing outside the EarthBox. --- The clippings will eventually breakdown and re-nourish the soil. - [17:53]: Applied a top dress. --- For each plant, I gave: ----- 2tbsp of Craft Blend ----- 1tbsp of Kashi Blend - [18:03]: Sprinkled the top dress around the base of each plant. --- To make sure everything was well in contact with the soil, I made sure to agitate it a bit with my fingers. - [18:06]: Okay now time to water! --- Poured the solution from earlier into a spray bottle and misted it over the top soil of the EarthBox. --- Sprayed around both plants focusing on the area where I top dressed (1/2 cup each). --- I tried to avoid spraying the top growth of both plants. - [18:41]: Going to water the reservoir. --- Filled a measuring cup with 2 cups of distilled water and poured it straight into the EarthBox’s fill tube. - [18:45]: Now for the foliar spraying! --- As per BAS schedule, this week’s dosage will be double the strength. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 3.5mL of Formula EM-5 [All Natural Garden Cleaning Concentrate] --- Mixed the solution and poured it into a spray bottle. --- Misted the top soil evenly (about 1/2 cup). Day 05 - Friday - 05/27/22 - Total Days: 023 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 75.8Β°F - Humidity: 65.1% - VPD: 1.03kPa ----------------------------------- - [21:44]: Growing along nicely! --- She is already on her 3rd set of true leaves with the 4th set just barely starting! --- Hyped! - [22:18]: Time to water. --- Filled a pitcher with 6 cups of distilled water and poured it into the EarthBox’s fill tube. Day 06 - Saturday - 05/28/22 - Total Days: 024 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 75.8Β°F - Humidity: 64.9% - VPD: 1.04kPa ----------------------------------- - [20:51]: Just a quick evening checkup. --- Growth is looking good! Day 07 - Sunday - 05/29/22 - Total Days: 025 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.1Β°F - Humidity: 64.7% - VPD: 1.06kPa ----------------------------------- - [07:48]: Wow! So beautiful! --- Looking very perky! --- I’ve noticed that she tends to be the most perkiest in the mornings just before lights out. --- Whereas in the evenings, just as the lights turn on, her leaves tend to be a bit more droopy. - [20:16]: Looking great! --- Growing along beautifully! - [20:38]: Time to water. --- Filled a pitcher with 6 cups of distilled water and poured it straight into the EarthBox’s fill tube. Grow Questions

Not sure why some of her leaves are yellowing on the edges. Is this due to environment? - 78.3Β°F | 64.8%RH Or a watering issue? - Currently she's drinking 8-9 cups a day through a sub-irrigated planter (EarthBox). Or maybe a deficiency? - See Logs for complete details.

Daily Light Integral The daily light integral (DLI) you provide is 58.3 mol/m²/d whereas the ideal is 34 mol/m²/d. Calculated from your light figures,I'd say your problems light too bright/near,stressing it out. ( your excellent details provided make me very confident this is your problem, well done) You may find this useful! https://growlightmeter.com/calculator/ Be lucky! Less warp engine! OK, had a better look and yeah, too close to light! I have that light in my collection,I use it for veg stage in a 4x4, know it well. Only good for 3 x 3 flowering and has a very uneven PAR footprint concentrated central. 🚨 RED ALERT! The plant looks generally good, problem is tops getting too much heat/light stress. Hopefully you can raise the light? If not you are going to have to get creative on how to provide the correct light requirements for the situation, even use of the dimmer won't help that close. Been through your pain of growing. You are on the right path!

That's a good looking plant you have there! "--- Just brings a smile and an overall feeling of grower’s satisfaction. She might not be the prettiest, but damn I love her! --- Plus everything I’ve learned from this run I can use for the next one and will try to improve as I grow." πŸ˜„ made my day, every grows ❀️, I already planned next 2 set ups and grows, the next one will always be "the one". Going good πŸ‘

@@Foffukuntz, LOL! Yea, those were really low 5.5 pH feedings. πŸ˜… At the time, I was thought that pH values were the same across all growing mediums (nope). I started in hydro so was trying to lower the soil down to hydro pH specs (5.5-6.0 with an ideal of 5.8 pH), yes this is wrong for growing in soil and even worse for the microbes when growing in living soil (found online that living soil's microbes can tolerate ranges between 6.2-7.0 with an ideal of 6.5 pH). I may get a soil meter later, but can't afford a decent one right now (had bad experiences with the cheap meters/pens so don't really want to mess with those at the moment). At least for this grow, going to let the biology in the medium regulate and balance out any pH issues. Of course if the growth gets worse, pH will be the first thing I check. πŸ‘

@Ensign420, you SHOULD be concerned with the PH of anything you give your plants! Read more of your diary this time, Certain nutrients aren't absorbed unless the PH is correct. You should strive to maintain a range between 6.0 and 6.5 - 6.2 or 6.3 is ideal. That 5.5 feed was way too low! βœŒοΈπŸ˜„

Thanks buddy! Yea I am overly pleased with how she's growing! And the the next one will be even better! As far as VPD, just going to go with what I have (next grow will be in cooler weather so environment will be easier to control). All I can do for now is keep constant air circulation in the tent and to keep good airflow throughout the canopy. Defoliation and keeping her 'dancing' and constantly moving around using the oscillating fan helps a lot and will hopefully prevent botrytis cinerea (aka bud rot) by keeping stagnant pockets of moisture from forming around the buds. Always learning, always growing! πŸ––πŸ‘

If you liked DLI, VPD is also a good consideration ( you mentioned you need RH down ) this will also be a lightbulb moment for the stage GROWER that you are, " In order for plants to thrive in an indoor grow space, the VPD needs to be at a particular level, which can be different for every situation and every stage of growth. Since the temperature and humidity affect the VPD, the temperature and humidity both need to be at the correct levels-at the right β€œsetpoint”-which means heat and moisture are going to need to be added or taken away from the grow room at different times." πŸ€” This grow WILL succeed πŸ₯‡ Make it so! It smells because it's happy, glad I could help.

@Ensign420, I feel you, the temp and humidity figures you give aren't that bad buddy, experiment with fan airflow aiming in tent with RH, could drop yours the small amount needed, this will help, these things arent iron clad regulations, more a guide! I struggle with Fahrenheit I'm a Celsius. Do you have light off figures and assume your figures are canopy height. I monitor low down pot temps/rh too. Try a "it is what it is, near enough is good enough " filter, much less stressful. You can only do so much. ( my canopy is 89.6f, I wouldn't recommend much more ) Looking forward to your progress and enjoying your enthusiasm and sheer joy 😎

Yes! VPD is essential! Unfortunately I don't have complete control of my temps (struggling with the AC cutting the circuit breaker during the day). The best I can do to control temperature is to run my grow lights at night with the AC on low (so lights off during the daytime). As for humidity, I am struggling with high RH and for the first time, had to remove the humidifier from the tent. I am running the exhaust fan on at a higher setting to pull the moisture out (also have the AC unit placed just outside the tent and on dehumidify mode which helps control the RH in the lung room). And thanks on the good vibes! I really hope this attempt will be a success. Aye Captain! Steady as she goes. The terpenes given off are a lemony citrus profile with a hint of a gas or fuel undertones. Stoked! Also just noticing some pistil hairs starting to turn orange!

The plants feeling the 😍. Looks very nice, so much better and get you all plain sailing and killing it! (Not the plant!). 🀣 finally got to use that tricorder you had for just such an occasion, fantastic pictures. I used macro mode on my phone and zoom the picture or my led/uv 30/60/90X loop, don't go judging it by leaf trichromes bud only. Leaf was good to train on, it's been very rewarding watching progress after the lightbulb moment and extra credit for planning ahead. You deserve enough to see you through, which is the same position I'm in! Mentioned you in my comments recently. πŸ––πŸ‘πŸ™πŸ‘
