Decided to move up from 3 x 2 gallon fabric pots to 2 x 5 gallon air pots, which fill the tent's 70cm diameter. The plan was to run two Herbies freebies - the CBD Lemon Auto and the Zkittlez Auto side-by-side.
The CBD Lemon Auto germinated first and was looking good. When I transferred the peat pellets to their air pots, the Zkittlez was just a wee hoop in the soil (see day 1 photo) whereas the CBD Lemon Auto was opening its cotyledons. The trouble is, the CBD Lemon Auto stalled there and hasn't grown since. It is for the bin tomorrow.
Which makes this my first single strain diary! Gutted about the CBD Lemon Auto but excited to see what the Zkittlez Auto can do and what I can achieve with a bigger pot after my successful first 2 gallon grow (yielded 96g dried and trimmed down to the flower, was pleased). I'm thinking the larger pot will create opportunities for a higher canopy and more, denser buds.
This girl got a misting of plain tap water on day 2 and day 7 (probably a little much on day 7, I hate that 'soaked' look in the photo). Having wet her I decided to try putting the oscillating fan on, but within ~5 minutes the seedling had collapsed onto the soil, which made me realise its a little early. Once I get the other pot out of the tent (RIP) this girl will have ideal light coverage from my lil 100W LED smack bang in the middle of the tent.
At present, the light is at 50% at 20 inches, which provides a DLI of about 14.1 at the canopy. Humidity sits at just 50% pre-watering (though shot up post-misting) and temperature averages 21.3 degrees celsius. Will focus on providing more substantive weekly updates rather than a trickle of info!
29/09/2022 (day 8): DLI is a bit high at 18.6 for a seedling.
30/09/2022 (day 9): Good dose of tap water at some distance to the plant. These air pots take some getting used to as they leak water out the sides!
01/10/2022 (day 10): She's 9cm tall today!
02/10/2022 (day 11): Got something like 750ml water for the whole pot, raised the light to 51cm (20 inches)
03/10/2022 (day 12): Turned oscillating fan on
04/10/2022 (day 13): Turned oscillating fan off (a bit of crumpling on the leaf) and a bit of water.
05/10/2022 (day 14): All well. Leaf has de-crumpled so will keep the fan off for the time being!
10/10/2022 (day 19): Decided to go ahead and top her! In addition to a bit of LST that seems to be pointless stem-bending apropo nothing at this stage. Gave her her only water of the week, probably a good 750ml.
11/10/2022 (day 20): Talk about praying! This grrl will do anything for light. Good girl.
16/10/2022 (day 25): Ghozteen got a water and some nutrients. I have started adding calmag at a concentration of 1ml per litre as I don't want to run into the same issues as I did with my last grow.
18/10/2022 (day 27): Another water and some nutes. She seems to have bounced back from her topping quite nicely. I have also been trying to tie her down, but noticed that I haven't got any kind of canopy in the centre of the plant, and am instead obstructing other big fan leaves when I tie down. I need to get a bit more creative with my ties methinks.
Week 5: 20 - 26 October 2022
22/10/2022 (day 31) -1.5L of water
24/10/2022 (day 33) - a bit more bending outwards, managing to keep apical dominance in check
26/10/2022 (day 36) - 1.5L of water
Pistils started shooting this week and we move into flowering proper. Protracted absences from home mean that I haven't been totally precise/on top of my photography and record-keeping.
Week 6: 27 October - 2 November 2022
28/10/2022 (day 38) - I've got a break! In my enthusiasm to gently expand the canopy in all directions and keep apical dominance at bay, I've noticed a break on one of my central branches! Looks like it might not be fatal as the branch's leaves are still looking OK. Pray for her. She is 43cm tall today and sitting 41cm from the light, delivering a DLI at canopy of 37.9
29/10/2022 (day 39) - nothing to report today except that the break doesn't seem to be bothering her.
30/10/2022 (day 40) - 40 days young today so she got 1.5L of water with flowering nutrients instead -- I have put a little aerated bit of plaster tape on the break just to protect it from the light and generally just to soothe my conscience... I know, I know...
2/11/2022 (day 43) - another 1.5L of water as she seems thirsty -- seem to have avoided any long term issues with the break -- temperature is picking up with the onset of summer leading to quite a high average VPD (1.73kPa).
Week 7: 3 - 9 November 2022
03/11/2022 (day 44) - 1.5L of water for the girl. She is 31cm from the light (about 12 inches). If the stretch continues, I'm going to have to find a way to raise my light as it's already at the top of its cables. Not too worried.
04/11/2022 (day 45) - 1.5L of water. 28cm from the light today so the stretch continues!
05/11/2022 (day 46) - Nothing to report today.
06/11/2022 (day 47) - Looking healthy, no sign of any long term damage from the break. Really filling up the tent (branches running up against the wall) so may have overdone the LST a little. I released the ties a bit to let her grow more vertically. Fingers crossed!
07/11/2022 (day 48) - 1.5L of water.
09/11/2022 (day 50) - 1.5L of water, 50 days young!
Week 8: 10 - 16 November 2022
11/11/2022 (day 52) - 1.5L of water for the girl. She is 31cm from the light (about 12 inches). If the stretch continues, I'm going to have to find a way to raise my light as it's already at the top of its cables. Not too worried.
13/11/2022 (day 54) - 1.5L of water. 28cm from the light today so the stretch continues!
15/11/2022 (day 56) - 1.5L of water, she is 73.5cm from base of stem to canopy!
Week 9: 17 - 23 November 2022
17/11/2022 (day 58) - No water today, week 9 is a go!
18/11/2022 (day 59) - 1.5L of water with jujumambaliciousness
19/11/2022 (day 60) - No water
20/11/2022 (day 61) - 1.5L of water with juju-frulu-ma-conga-nonga
22/11/2022 (day 63) - 1.5L of water with juju
23/11/2022 (day 64) - canopy stands at 77cm from stem, lamp clearance is 26cm, so just over 10 inches :0
Week 10: 24 - 30 November 2022
24/11/2022 (day 65) - 1.5L of water
25/11/2022 (day 66)
26/11/2022 (day 67) - 1.5L of water
28/11/2022 (day 69) - 1.5L of water
29/11/2022 (day 70)
30/11/2022 (day 71) - 1.5L of water
Week 11: 1 - 7 December 2022
01/12/2022 (day 72)
02/12/2022 (day 73) - 1.5L of water
03/12/2022 (day 74)
04/12/2022 (day 75) - 1.5L of water
06/12/2022 (day 77) - 1.5L of water
07/12/2022 (day 78)
We are getting close, fam! Plenty of trich pics this week and no sign of ambering. This girl smells dank as all fuck and the main colas are thickening up nicely. There are still a tonne of less mature bud sites lower down the plant (I don't think I'll ever be brutal enough to defoliate viable colas) that are going to pose a challenge come harvest. I am intending to chop in one fell swoop so it's just a question of monitoring the trichomes for now. This baby will be rocking in her 80s!
Week 12: 8 - 14 December 2022
A very humid week and I have been closely monitoring the trichomes for signs of ambering (there is none!). I'm headed out of town so need to get chopping by the weekend and the dry/trim is gonna be a mare. The colas are starting to groan under their own weight and rest against the tent walls, so I've used cable ties to tie some of them together.
08/12/2022 (day 79) - 1.5L of water
09/12/2022 (day 80)
10/12/2022 (day 81) - 1.5L of water
11/12/2022 (day 82)
12/12/2022 (day 83)
13/12/2022 (day 84) - 1.5L of water
14/12/2022 (day 85)
16/12/2022 (day 87) - 1.5L of water.
17/12/2022 (day 88) - chop day! Quick wet trim and a photo for posterity (see harvest entry)
18/12/2022 - hanging to dry
At this point, I left the country for around 3 weeks and had my lil 'sis come and trim the buds for me on 22 December. It meant there was only around 5 days of hanging prior to the dry trim and sticking in 4 decent-sized tupperware containers...
@Aldo90 - wanted to ping ya for the harvest post :)
This Herbies Zkittlez Auto was a freebie with a beginner mix pack. I didn't have high expectations since the other freebie (CBD Lemon Auto) damped off within a week. However, this plant took plenty of punishment and responded well to topping and aggressive LST. The smell is more gasoline/diesel than the fruitier strains I ran last time and comes with a nice kick. Because I harvested before the trichomes showed noticeable ambering, it is definitely on the head-high mindfuck end of the spectrum. Volatile terpenes fill the air whenever I burp my jars.
This Herbies Zkittlez Auto was a freebie with a beginner mix pack. I did not have high expectations but ended up with 475g on the scales at harvest, and 83g of nuggets (1g shy of 3oz) following my dry trim. Heaps of trim. Overall very happy with how the harvest turned out but probably would have waited another 3-4 days if I hadn't been leaving the grow behind.
How is this going bud. The one I've got in soil is tiny compared to these. The 2 in coco have began to flower fully and should be rather nice. These look epic. Hope to see the harvest update.
@Aldo90, Thanks for checking in! I've been deferring the harvest update because I only started curing properly in jars on Saturday. I've had a wee sample but it has got me way too high to give a smoke review.
@Aldo90, Yeah bro, some of the branches are starting to sag against the tent wall because of the weight of the nugs, will try and spotlight some trichs in pics this week!
