Since my other two seeds have no hope of doing anything since they were squashed flat by the postal system, I'm now popping two more from a different source... This will also be, of course, a DWC grow!
As far as the germination method I'm using here, I've put the seeds in a glass of water and will leave them there for about 24 hours and then transfer them to a Root Riot to let them finish germinating... Got these seeds from my favorite group on FB... Basic to Advanced Cannabis Growers (or B2ACG for "short") .... a great, private group - don't tolerate assholes, everyone there is there to teach and learn in a helpful, respectful way - AND the Admin has GREAT genetics ... all you have to do is ask for a menu... and you can't beat the price. Check them out if you're on FB!
12/15 - Both seeds sank to the bottom of the glass of water this morning with a little nudge so they're now both in Root Riots (pre-soaked in 5.5pH water), in their buckets (covered!), in the tent where it's nice and warm and in a day or two we should have "lift off"
12/17 - LIFT OFF! Little OG has taken the lead but I know that GG is determined to keep up....
12/18 - Top watering both with water from their buckets which contain the RapidStart for root development.... I've encircled both of them with a wet towel to make sure the humidity around them is as high as I can get since the humidity in the tent is only 36%! This is a practice I've always done with little ones but it crucial here! The towel also serves to block out light from the bucket since the netpot still has a lot of room for more clay pebbles - those will be added as the seedlings get bigger.
12/19 - GG finally made it out of the Root Riot completely... that's happiness! And OG is really starting to strut her stuff with the first leaves showing, not just the cotyledons... I may have to give her bucket a change up when her roots hit the water as I forgot to close up the hole in the top of the bucket last night so there was light getting into it all night long.... we'll see... I'm going to add some H202 to her bucket first thing now to see if I can't mitigate any damage.
12/20 - OG continues to outpace GG but GG probably doesn't even know there's a competition going on as she can't yet see over the bucket! LOL! Very happy with the progress of both these ladies!
12/21 - I checked on OG's roots and they've hit the water! I will start to give her some nutes next week... unless she tells me she needs them earlier! GG is doing well but obviously behind OG. Her roots still have not exited the netpot so she's definitely going to be behind OG for a while. Battling low humidity in the tent - may have to keep the wet towels around them for a while. I also put another layer of clay pebbles in both of them.
12/22 - OG is coming along really nicely... GG, well, GG is just a bit slower. Finally today I saw one root peeking out from the netpot ....
12/23 - Happy 1 Week Birthday, little ones! My Christmas babies!!
OG continues to be the strongest here - GG's roots still aren't out of the netpot - can't even find the one I THOUGHT I saw the other day... but I'm not worried... she'll develop in her own time and in her own way.... The only trouble I can foresee on the horizon is the light... if OG is much taller than GG, the light will need to be at different heights to please them both... I was going to start another seed as I'm harvesting my #2 Bruce from the closet but I think I'm going to hold off... Pinky is in there and she might be ready for harvest about the same time as OG and GG start to really show me their differences - that way, I'll have the closet available if one of them needs a different light height - if not, I'll start two more seeds in there! Plan ahead... always gotta plan ahead!
12/24 - Top watered GG - she doesn't LOOK like she's unhappy but she's just not growing as strongly as OG - who is doing really well... I'll give OG her final layer of clay pebbles in a couple of days and remove her towel... I'm going to have to hang some wet towels in the tent anyway because the air is just SO dry... only 35% humidity!
12/26 - GG has finally "caught up" and has her roots in the water now! I banked up the pebbles to block the light from the bucket and, because the humidity in there was just horrifically low (like 27%!), hung some wet towels and even soaked a pair of jeans and hung THEM up (those things dry SO slowly!)... That's given good results as the humidity is now 70% which I'm very happy about.
Gave them both their first taste of nutes today and added in some H2O2 because I wasn't liking the color of the roots on OG... better to prevent than to have to cure! EC now sits at 0.4 for them and the pH is 6.0 - GG's is a little higher and I might take it down some - but not right now as I have a LOT of cleaning up to do after Christmas!
I hope everyone's holiday was what you wanted it to be and that you were able to find at least a little bit of joy... Cheers! And on to 2023!
12/28 - both ladies are seeming to like their nutes - at least they're not complaining! pH is drifting up a bit and will correct that today... OG is definitely the "Big Sister" and GG is playing catch-up... and not winning! LOL! No matter - I think they're both going to do magnificently! Looking for a little more stretch to them before adding more pebbles.
12/29 - I'm laughing to myself this morning thinking how very like it is to family photo albums where you have a TON of pictures from when the kids are young and, as they get older, the number of photos drops off... I cram so many photos of the ladies here when they're basically in their infancy - and then, when they get older and near to harvest, it's a struggle to find a good and DIFFERENT photo to take... oh well... no matter.
These two are doing very well - their coloring is a bit "off" - there's some slight variation in the density of the green but I'm just accepting that for right now - certainly nothing is so amiss as to indicate a problem - yet. They may want more nutes and, if so, they'll tell me ... but not yet, not yet... Easier to fix a deficiency than a toxicity - even in DWC...
pH is a little high still - not terribly but I want to bring it down, especially in veg... EC remains rock solid but they are both drinking and that's great!
12/30 - Gave them both a clean bucket for their birthday... top watering always sends some of the clay pebble sediment into the water and seems to keep the pH a bit unstable - so now I'm not top-watering any longer, they can have clean Spring water and fresh nutes.... I'm needing them to stretch, though! Keep raising the lights and they keep ignoring me... what is it with these two that they don't obey my "command" - LOL! Love them and looking forward to their growth in 2023!!
12/31 - All is well! Had to trim the lowest leaves on OG since I need to add more pebbles and they were definitely in the way (I don't think I put enough pebbles in the bottom when I transferred them to the netpots) - but you'd never notice! She's growing really well as is GG! They're loving the higher EC ... they're going to greet the new year in fine style!
1/1/23 - Happy New Year to all my growing buddies, to all my ladies, to everyone who pops by to see what these two are doing!
1/2 - Ladies are humming along nicely... no complaints out of either one of them! Both EC and pH are steady and they're drinking - what more could I ask for?! :-D
01/03 - These two are REALLY happy at the moment! Growing strongly, getting some stretching in - and if I don't get more pebbles in their netpots, they'll probably come after me with a baseball bat! TODAY, ladies!!! I PROMISE!!!!
01/04 - They didn't need to come at me with the baseball bat... filled up their netpots with the pebbles and they've been very happy. Both are really starting to grow - OG is going to be one bushy BUSHY plant while GG is going to be a little more demure...
01/05 - Updating this a day early as they won't be 3 weeks old until tomorrow - but tomorrow's pretty busy for me...
Gave them both a bucket change... added the Rapid Start to GG's bucket as her roots looked like they could use some (although I STILL think they look like OG has one more week of life to her than GG!) Going to start some LST later on today, a bit of ponytailing perhaps.... I have the feeling these two are going to fill my small tent!!
Update: I went back 2 hours after changing their buckets only to find GG screaming in agony (see the pics of her teaching me a lesson)... the pH had shot up to 6.7 and she was NOT a happy camper at all!! Quickly made the adjustment and will check on her every half hour and measure her pH ... she's one sensitive little gal, is GG... Meanwhile, the same thing had happened to OG but, in typical OG fashion, she just yawned and said "Huh?" but I adjusted HER pH as well... good god!
Second update 01/05 ... GG's pH was going up slowly again BUT she looked 100% better - her leaves had perked back up, the terrible crisping of them had stopped.. I trimmed off the two really bad leaves as they wouldn't ever regain any ability to help the plant and I did another small adjustment of her pH down again. I've also "ponytailed" her as I've wanted to try this technique and she seemed a good candidate as her cola was definitely going to be dominant. This technique will hopefully allow the side buds to gain more height and the plant will take on more of a bowl shape as opposed to a Christmas tree shape... Should anyone reading this want to try this, you need to know you cannot allow the ponytail to be in place longer than 8 hours a day...
Interesting day... very interesting day.
01/06 - Well, the two of them made it through their day yesterday ... OG doesn't show any signs of any stress and GG is doing well although a couple of her leaves still bear the marks of her aversion to high pH levels! She's going to be the one I'm really going to have to baby but that's ok... OG is just a bull - nothing bothers that one! Ponytailing both of them again today... then I'll stop for a week before doing it again.
01/07 - Decided to do a regular bit of LST on GG - she's not as bushy as OG and will take more readily to that kind of training. OG, though, is still going to be ponytailed because she's short, fat and really, really dense. Did a bit of defol on OG yesterday and it's been well received by her - she's doing extremely well!
Update... I've just discovered why OG is so much further along than dear GG... I was going back through the logs I keep because I wanted to know when to expect my newest baby's roots might hit the water - and I realized that OG's roots hit the water when she was only 4 days old! FOUR DAYS OLD!!!! That's unheard of... at least in MY experience! GG's roots didn't hit until she was 10 days old (her roots were only peeking out of the netpot at 6 days old) ... so no wonder OG has seemed like she's been about a week older than GG this whole time! That one is a ROCKET!!! Wowsie!
01/08 - Continuing to ponytail OG and LST GG... and both are loving it... responding really well. OG's side bud sites are almost completely catching up to the main cola so I think I'm going to just let it ride for a while. GG is needing more LST every day, keep pulling her over, letting her small bud sites into the light and they're responding well - had I left them alone, they would have been candidates for defoliation at some point - this way, they'll probably develop into good sized buds.
01/10 - The girls are really going to town but I'm having to do some hard LST on OG to try to keep her at a similar height as GG or we're going to have problems with the light distance soon. I may also have to do some defol on her soon - she's just terribly bushy!
They're both loving their nutes - GG's is slightly less than OG's - and I'm keeping GG's pH at 6.0 since she doesn't seem to like it any higher than that...
01/11 - So the ponytailing days are over... both are being "normally" LST'd and they're both pretty much the same height which is good. Did some defoliation on OG yesterday - just took the two top fan leaves off since they were so massive they were shading the entire plant... she looks awfully good this morning and I'm super pleased. Starting to look for signs of pre-flower - should be soon!
01/12 - The ladies continue to impress - and they're already starting to smell wonderful! OG is definitely in pre-flower, it'll probably be a few days before I see that in GG. Increased the EC on both of them today - and their PH is staying quite stable. Everything is happy in the tent!
01/13 - Happy Friday the Thirteenth! (If you believe in that sort of balderdash!) ... Had to do some serious defoliation on OG this morning... she was/is just so bushy, her leaves were quite wet from overlapping each other. Once I got the leaves out of the way, I did a lot more LST on her to keep her buds low and as even as I could... I did the same to GG but not quite as strenuously... she hasn't really started her stretch yet the way OG has so that complicates her care a little bit. Both are showing signs now of being in pre-flower so things are ramping up!
01/14 - GG is unhappy although she's not showing it... her EC remains rock steady, she's drinking nicely - but her pH fell through the floor this morning to 5.2. I haven't done a bucket change on her for a while so I think that's in order and I'm going to lower her EC by 0.2 ... she seems to be the "tender" one here - she doesn't like her pH to go too high and she doesn't seem to like as much nutes as OG does... so we'll feed her a little less and hope she is able to keep up with OG. I think she will - in fact, I KNOW she will! :-D
01/15 - The ladies are looking lovely and man, I LOVE opening the tent - the smell is getting just delicious! I think it's OG that's giving me the smells - whoever it is, it's gorgeous! They're both doing really well, EC is stable, slight fluctuation on the pH which I'm puzzling about right now - but I'll get it figured out. Meanwhile, neither one is complaining which is a super plus!
01/16 - The ladies are both in pre-flower now and telling me they need more food! Since you can't keep good women down, they'll get all the food they require! Hold on, ladies! I'm coming!!
01/17 - So their EC is back up to 0.8 but I think they could actually take a few more nutes so will add some more today... at this point, I want the EC to read closer to 1.0. The problem is always "what nutes to add more of..." - so here's my reasoning: they're growing really strongly, starting their stretch, which means they've got plenty of nitrogen... they're not showing any deficit of calcium or magnesium... so I'm going to add more P & K - which means the bloom nutes at this point (not going to start KoolBloom for another couple of weeks). So there! Decided! Another dose of Bloom added into the buckets - makes a lot of sense, especially since they're racing into flower.
I've just ordered another tent because of an upcoming SERIOUS problem... my tent is only 60" high... those 5 gallon buckets take up a lot of space at the bottom and then my lights take up space at the top (and they're just about at their max height) - so I'm HOPING to get my new ACInfinity 2'x4'x6' tent (so I'll have another 12" of height!) BEFORE I need to scrog these ladies... In order to try to stave off the need to scrog, I'll be doing more LST on them. Hope it works...
01/18 - Tried to bump up their EC to 0.8 yesterday and that went pretty badly - drooping and a general dullness about them - very sad looking plants, to be honest!... but one of the things I absolutely love about growing DWC is that problems are seen pretty immediately and solutions are effective pretty immediately. I whacked back the EC just before I went to bed last night and this morning they kind of looked at me and said "Huh? There was a problem?? What problem you talkin' 'bout woman?!" ...
I'm going to have to do some defol on OG today. And I've just gotten word my new tent will be here Tuesday ... I don't think there's much point in trying to get the scrog net up right now... they can last without it until the new tent is here... I'll just continue to LST as needed... VERY excited about my new tent! There will be MUCH more head room for these ladies!
01/19 - Both ladies had a bucket change today ... and afterwards had to endure haircuts... Upped the EC to 0.9 ... hoping they will now accept it without complaints. They're "in bed" for a few hours now and I won't be able to tell if they're reacting to the higher EC until this evening at the earliest... crossing my fingers!
Am getting my new, taller tent on Tuesday (if the weather doesn't delay it!) and will have a scrog net already to go...
01/20 - This morning, the EC was down and the pH way up - lots of adjustments! Gave both of them some KoolBloom liquid (GG was showing signs of a phosphorus deficiency and I can't have that!), increased their food by 0.5tsp of each of the Flora series... they kind of told me they were pretty hungry since they plowed through the nutes I have them during the bucket change .. and the heightened pH told me the same... Took their EC to 1.0 and got the pH down to 6.2/6.3 which I think should be good... will monitor them throughout the day to see how they do with all of my ministrations... Meanwhile, the tent can't come fast enough!!!! They're REALLY starting to stretch!
01/21 - Ladies are doing wonderfully - had to adjust the nutes/pH a couple of times yesterday. The indications of a phosphorus deficiency haven't continued and actually GG's leaves, which had a blueish haze to them, have retreated back to their green... still a SLIGHT tinge of blue but I think she'll be ok... if not, more PK will be on her menu...
Getting even more anxious for the new tent... Tuesday can't come fast enough and I hope the upcoming snowstorm doesn't delay delivery!
01/22 - The ladies are PLOWING through the nutes and demanding more every day... this is wild! I gave OG a haircut only 3 days ago and she's needing another one... leaves lying on leaves creating puddles overnight... not good! GG doesn't seem to have that problem so she's going to stay away from the defol scissors.... both of them are racing upwards and the situation is getting desperate for a SCROG net... if I do nothing else on Tuesday but get the new tent up, set up the net and lollipop these babies, I don't care... it HAS to be done! Hurry up, Tuesday! Can't you come tomorrow instead?! Sigh....
01/23 - Know what I really REALLY love?! I love learning... and you know how I learn the BEST? By making mistakes!! You just don't learn from your successes!! And I learned something today that was really valuable! I learned that I don't have to go into panic mode when I lose power.... know how I learned that? When I opened the tent this morning to check on these ladies, measure their EC and pH and see how much water they'd consumed, I found out GG's pump wasn't connected!! I hadn't remembered to plug it back in yesterday morning when I was finished with that task! So her pump had been off for 24 hours... and not a peep from her. Now I know. Now I know!
Tomorrow can't come fast enough for me OR the ladies... as you can see in the photos, GG is doing an amazing stretch and I've GOT to get that scrog net on her (I've already started lollipopping in anticipation)... HAVE to get those lights raised! Neither of which I can do in the present set-up... I need that new tent!!! I won't update this tomorrow until I've got the new set up and can show y'all... well... that is, IF the tent is delivered tomorrow! Raging snow storm today.... Sigh...
01/25 - Yesterday was consumed with getting this tent up and the ladies into their new home. I'm incredibly impressed with @ACInfinityINC.. their tents are just incredible! My old tent wasn't all that old but too short for me now that I'm growing in DWC so I ordered their CloudLab642 and can't believe the improvements that have been made - and I didn't think they needed ANY improvement! From the zipper guard that hides the zipper to make sure there are NO light leaks to the straps that hold the bottom "tray" in place, they just keep thinking of better ways to do things. And I may be daft but it seems this is even sturdier than my old one - and my old one was incredibly sturdy!! I wouldn't even CONSIDER any other tent... and I'm hoping to get their new light for a 2x4 tent when they release it.. (240W!!!!) because if their tents are any indication, everything this company touches is absolute gold - and should be the gold standard for growers everywhere. Love them! AND it's got my cat's stamp of approval! :-D
(Now to get the mounting bars up... should have read those instructions before I put up the tent but no matter... my fault!) - oh yeah, the plants are doing great, too! LOL!
01/28 - Haven't had much time to keep up with the diary this week - but that doesn't mean I've ignored my ladies! They got their new tent, they've gotten my attempt at a Scrog net and they're doing well. I still need to do a bit more lollipopping and defoliation in general on OG... And she's also flowering much later than GG which is just about weird! But both look good and are behaving themselves.... Sunshine, my cat, keeps them under close observation! Sometime, I'll tell you how I came up with her name...
01/29 - Girls are doing well... OG is going to have to get a haircut today, no ifs, ands or buts... I've been putting it off but just can't any more. In fact, I'm going to go do that - RIGHT NOW! :-D
01/30 - Well, OG got scalped yesterday but isn't showing any sign of being bothered... as a matter of fact, I think she's been pretty appreciative of her time in the beauty salon... Her buds are still trailing GG's in development but again, I'm not worried... actually, I think I'm a little grateful since I'm probably not going to have to harvest/trim these ladies at the same time. Meanwhile, GG is just a rock star... gorgeous buds developing, and I can't wait now for the new light! Oh! I don't think I've said anything about that!! I've ordered a new light from @Phlizon.. their PL-4500 which, dimension-wise, will fit in my 2x4 tent and give me 450W of power.... I'm really psyched even though I STILL haven't gotten word that they've shipped it... When it arrives, I'm going to put the current @Phlizon PL-2000 in the closet so I'll have two of them in for my Devil Cream - so SHE'LL have extra light as well... Sigh... I need a bigger space... SO many things I want to be growing! :-D
02/02 - A few days since I updated this (except for pics, I guess) ... everything is going really, really well... girls are very happy, drinking LOTS and I've increased the EC to 1.2 - I think GG probably will need a few more which is about insane! But we'll see about that tomorrow... OG has recovered from the massive haircut I had to give her and things are just chugging right along! :-D
The cold outside (it's currently -20F) is even affecting conditions in the tent - I think everyone's heating system is a little stressed and pumping as hard as possible... but they're doing really well. I didn't have to take the precautions with them that I had to take with my Devil Cream - actually, I was concerned that the humidity in THIS space was going to get too high but things seemed fairly normal in the tent this morning when I got up. I figure I've got another 4-5 weeks with GG and a few more than that for OG... we're all just bumping along quite well...
02/05 - They're both doing wonderfully - probably need a bit of defoliation but not going to add to the stress of the cold temps... a few more days until things get back to "normal" outside... meanwhile, they're on 24/0 lights and that's barely keeping the temps in the high 60s inside the tent.. No worries... they'll get some sleep - later!
02/06 - They'll be getting some sleep today... temps have moderated and are now only in the 20s outside, not the minus numbers! The two of them are going through the water/nutes at an astounding rate and that couldn't please me more! Keeping the EC and the pH stable has proven to be quite simple these past few weeks - again something that really REALLY pleases me! I'm guessing at another four weeks with these ladies... maybe more? At least, I think, with OG...
02/07 - Both OG and GG had a little trim yesterday along with about 3/4 gallon fill up with additional nutes. They're quite content and taking the higher EC well. LOTS of time left for both of them!
Extraordinarily happy ladies.... and nowhere NEAR ready to give up the ghost. OG's pistils are still all white, buds continue to grow... at least another month with her I think!
GG is another story - her pistils are starting to turn and she's MUCH fatter than OG... but I still think I've got about a month to go with her... I just don't know... I'll just let her tell me when she's ready. :-D
02/13 - It was bucket change day for GG ... had been having trouble keeping her pH up and this morning it was in the cellar so I didn't have any other option. A batch of fresh nutes and a good pH level should please her (although she hadn't been complaining at all!)
02/14 - After the bucket change, the pH nudged up a bit so it's not quite stable yet... it was 6.4 this morning which is acceptable but I know GG doesn't like it that high so brought it back down to 6.2 for her... OG is rock steady in both EC and pH ... both ladies are very happy!
GG is getting to the place where I'm going to start really paying attention to her trichs... they're all becoming quite milky which is lovely but I want some amber in there... OG has a ways to go yet... she's been incredibly bushy and I think all the defoliation I've had to do on her (I still want to do MORE but...) has had a stunting effect on her... her buds are still quite small but she continues to look good, to grow well and look very, very happy....
02/23 - GG is coming down to the finish line... I'm think she's got maybe 2 weeks left if that... She's really bulking up and looking gorgeous. OG has a while left - probably another 4 weeks but that's ok... I wouldn't want to have to trim both of them at the same time! LOL!
03/02 - GG's nutes have been reduced to plain water with 1/4 tsp KoolBloom dry for ripening... her EC is 0.4, pH 5.9 .... heading to harvest in about a week. Meanwhile, OG is continuing the nutes in full with an EC of 1.0 and a pH of 6.0. She's starting to fatten up but will never equal the joyous fat buds of GG... I doubt I'll grow this one again although I've got a couple of ideas on how to make it better if I ever do grow it again... I'd be MUCH more heavy-handed in the defoliation and probably leave only 8-10 colas on her... but that's for the next time. Right now, things are percolating along just fine but I'm not looking forward to trimming OG - not at all!
Super easy to grow, rather a sensitive thing in that it didn't like the pH to even get to 6.2 nor did it like a whole lot of nutes.. She was a delight and I'd like to grow her again.
She started out as a powerhouse and I let her down... the results were all my fault... I might grow this again just to prove my assumptions about what I've done wrong are correct... this SHOULD have turned into a favorite.
The failures here are all my own making.... I wasn't ruthless enough in my defoliation/lollipopping and had a LOT of larf which didn't allow the plant to really focus on making decent, fat buds.... this SHOULD have been a much better harvest. If I ever grow it again, I'm going to be a maniac in getting rid of the "low hanging fruit" of wimpy bud sites... probably only allowing 8 - 10 to reach harvest.
@Kruidenvrouwtje, oh yeah... it's not even me! LOL! It's apparently of a lady in Havana who hangs out on the corner with her girlfriends and they all smoke stogies ... I chose her 'cause I loved the flowers in her hat! AND she looks a bit younger than me... LOL!
@GrowingGrannie, Well, you know what they say.... growing weed is more addictive than smoking it... so the big blunt on your profile picture is just for show 😃
@Kruidenvrouwtje, no, I really don't! I tried it back in college in the 60s but wasn't all that impressed ... I could get higher WITHOUT it so why pay $5 for an ounce of it when I didn't have much money ... and I've tried it here recently but all it did was send me to the couch - and it was VERY mild shit... so no, it's just not something I'm into! I just love the challenge of growing it...
What the crap is pony-tailing? Lol , sounds like an eventfulish bucket swap . But you corralled that pretty quick. Lookin forward to seeing how your ponytailing works out... lov seeing the little mark near ur name showing u updated .. hope they settle into the new buckets n like their hair do!!!
@GrowingGrannie, awesome news. Was curious how it was working out for you. Now thinking I'm gonna start my youngins tomorrow morning . 6 hrs for a few days will be doable now I'm outta work for a bit.. see how it works for my photosp's , think it should pan out similarly. Shall find out. But that's great , gotta see how the next few updates go for you!!!!
@Grow4Releaf, hey! hey! Just wanted to update this thread and let you know that ponytailing is really kind of cool! It's actually a bit like topping although you don't get two colas out of the one... but it REALLY allows the side branches to catch up with the main cola which has been a terrible problem for me in past grows... one gigantically tall cola and everything else sweeping up down in the basement! LOL! I like it VERY much for autos.. give it a try sometime - but again, don't leave the ponytail on for longer than 6 hours (I think I had said 8 but that's not right)... I only had to do it for 3 days ... :-D Cheers!
That OG is definately a leafy girl. She could just have a longer flowering time in comparison to the GG, just a thought (in regards to the development). Looking great regardless 👋.
Looks amazing. I've been MIA learning from mistakes 😂, but I'm back and made a transfer to coco in an attempt to remedy my over zealousness. Great grow as usual, looking forward to these girls hitting the scales!
