Second grow experience!
20230324 - Started germination of seed.
20230328 - Put my germinated White Widow Auto seed (Herbies) into a Root Riot Planter Starter Cube in some soil and am looking forward to the journey. I layered my pots with 3:1 Fox Farms Ocean Forest : Clay Pebbles on the bottom (40% total volume) and 3:1 Fox Farms Happy Frog : Clay Pebbles on the top (60% total volume), using a comparable approach to my first grow with a slightly altered ratio.. My thought being that the Happy Frog mix would be gentler on the seedlings when they're first getting started. After watering I placed a humidity dome over the seed to help avoid the soil from drying out. I am trying to starter cube here just for shits since I have them around for some future cloning.
I am growing with a AC Infinity Cloudline T4 4" ventilation fan that is currently set to run 6min ON/24min OFF @ speed 1, although I am still working to balance things out. This tent already has an 3 week old plant growing well in it and, with the increased watering, the relative humidity (RH) has been spiking a bit. It's likely further adjustments will be needed in the future to stabilize the temperature and RH in a happy place for my girls.
20230330 - Day 1: White Widow #1 opened up! Water
20230331 - Day 2: I changed the ventilation to 3min ON/27OFF @ speed 2. The longer running time wasn't reducing humidity, but was instead decreasing the tent temperature below 70F during lights on, so we'll try shorter and faster instead. Water
20230401 - Day 3: Water
20230402 - Day 4: 2nd set of leaves is starting to come out! Water
20230403 - Day 5: Water
20230404 - Day 6: Water
20230405 - Day 7: She survived her 1st week and looking good! Water
20230406 - Day 8: Water
20230407 - Day 9: 3rd node is starting to show. Water
20230408 - Day 10:
20230409 - Day 11: Water
20230410 - Day 12:
20230411 - Day 13: Water
20230412 - Day 14: 4th node is showing. Water
20230413 - Day 15:
20230414 - Day 16: Today was moving day! This young lady got a new tent all to herself as I prepare to change the light schedule in my other tent to 12/12. She's in a slightly larger tent now, which I will maintain at the current 20/4 light cycle for vegging my next photoperiod plants and for any additional auto-flowers that I get started. She may even get some additional company as I play with growing a few other crops indoors. Water
20230415 - Day 17:
20230416 - Day 18: Letting her dry out a bit more to encourage some root growth and then will start feeding her nutrients with the next watering.
20230417 - Day 19: Nutrient water
20230418 - Day 20: I was surprised this morning to see some stigma beginning to show! Auto-flowering plants really get started quite early! I am still trying to wrap my head around how to LST without topping, but for now I am just going to leave her to grow.
20230419 - Day 21:
20230420 - Day 22: I'm unsure whether this would count as the first week of flowering given the stigma seemed to be further maturing. Regardless, she seems to be growing well. I'm thinking about defoliating a couple of the larger fan leaves later this week to expose the bud sites, but will give those a few more days to stretch before making a final decision. Water
20230421 - Day 23:
20230422 - Day 24: Nutrient water
20230423 - Day 25: Looking good! It seems like there's some stretching going starting up.
20230424 - Day 26: She is really growing fast right now! I swear she's gone up at least 2" or 3" in the past 2 days. I've decided for this first auto grow I am just gonna let her do her thing. So, I'm not messing around with LST or anything else, just so that I can get a better understanding of how things progress more or less naturally indoors. I will continue to provide supplemental nutrients of course.
20230425 - Day 27: Her leaves were still looking pretty firm, so I am going to hold off on watering until tomorrow.
20230426 - Day 28: Changed up the nutrients today for watering to Fox Farms Tiger Bloom + Big Bloom. Defoliated a few of the lower interior nodes that were forming and noticed that a few of the lower fan leaves are starting to fade. For now, I left them and will monitor. Nutrient water
20230427 - Day 29: She really grew a lot over the past week, nearly doubling in height. I am going to continue letting her grow naturally to see how things progress.
20230428 - Day 30: Some of her lower fan leaves were yellowing up quite a bit, so I defoliated them. The node shoots are also beginning to make their way upward to hopefully develop nice colas of their own. The main one is showing a lot of pistals now compared to last week. Its safe to assume that flowering really started last week for this girl. I noticed that the tips of her leaves were starting to curl downward this morning as well so I thought I might try to flush her, assuming this is indicative of too much nitrogen. Water
20230429 - Day 31: Water
20230430 - Day 33: Defoliated a couple of lower fan leaves that were wilting and yellow. She seems to have grown a couple inches over night! When will the stretching stop?
20230501 - Day 33: I've been trying to do some basic fan leaf tucking to expose the lower branch bud sites, but am thinking that tomorrow I might try some LST to spread her out a bit instead. Water.
20230502 - Day 34: Most of her limbs are pretty woody it seems and I'm hesitant to over manipulate and break them, so planned LST is off the table. Leaf tucking it is! 😁
20230503 - Day 35: Raised the lights for the 3rd time this week. Hoping the stretching slows down soon or I'm gonna run out of height!
20230504 - Day 36: She grew nearly 1ft in a week! Hoping she's wrapping that up soon and will start to fill out more instead.
20230505 - Day 37: Still stretching. Nutrient water
20230506 - Day 38:
20230507 - Day 39: Definitely still stretching. Had to lift the light another 5" this morning. Otherwise she's looking good.
20230508 - Day 40: Water
20230509 - Day 41: Looks like she's finally slowing down her stretch! Here's to hoping she'll start to focus on building her buds next.
20230510 - Day 42: Looks like she might have some nut burn or light burn developing on her upper leaves. I raised the light again and will flush her tomorrow if it continues to progress. Hoping its just subtle purple color change instead.
20230511 - Day 43: Definitely think she was starting to show signs of some light burn by the end of last week. After growing so fast for so long I didn't realize she had been sitting only 8" away for a week now! Raised the light and will continue to monitor.
20230512 - Day 44: No further change in her upper canopy observed today, which is a good sign.
20230513 - Day 45: Think I can confirm the light was the issue. No further changes since I raised it.
20230514 - Day 46: Defoliated a few of the lower, yellow leaves this morning.
20230515 - Day 47: Added some cal-mag to the nutrient mix cause it seems to come up everywhere I read. Nutrient water
20230516 - Day 48:
20230517 - Day 49:
No doesn’t appear to be. Pic one shows just some weird new flower growth.
Pic two shows the standard female bract/calyx at the node.
You’re safe at the moment
20230518 - Day 50: Thought she might be growing some balls, but I've been reassured that I was mistaken. Decided to flush her given the struggles I'm having in the tent next door managing lockout. FLUSH
20230519 - Day 51:
20230520 - Day 52: The flower of her main cola definitely has some weirdness going on. Looks nothing like the rest of her buds. Otherwise, she seems to be doing fine.
20230521 - Day 53: Buds seem to be swelling a bit more now. Upward growth has definitely stopped at this point.
20230522 - Day 54:
20230523 - Day 55: I am postulating that the weird bud business I'm seeing on her main cola might be some foxtailing due to the light burn she experienced a couple weeks ago. So stress related. Her other buds look like they're developing normally. Nutrient water
20230524 - Day 56:
20230525 - Day 57: She's definitely starting to look a bit rough around the edges. She has evidence of light burn near her top and nutrient burn scattered elsewhere. I raised the light a couple inches, reduced the hours, and reduced the nutrients coming into the final stretch. I think leaving her to just grow tall wasn't the best choice on retrospect, but now that I know how that works out I'll be sure to use LST when I try to regrow this strain.
20230526 - Day 58: Her main cola is definitely foxtailing like crazy, likely due to all the stress. Looking more closely at the rest of her buds, while they have a more normal structure, they aren't very dense. I'll see her through the end, since she only has a couple weeks left, but the yield isn't going to be great, especially compared to the photoperiod I'm growing. I'll be leaving for a long weekend so I gave her a good watering to help her through. Water
20230531 - Day 63: While you can't appreciate it in the pics I'm sharing, she is becoming just a hot mess. Despite continuing with flushing her, she's lost nearly all of her fan leaves and even some of her sugar leaves are starting to brown, curl at the tips and get all crispy. I raised the light further, but I think there must be something nutrient related going on. I've confirmed the pH of the water flushing her is 6.5, but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Here's to hoping she finishes up soon before things get much worse for her.
20230603 - Day 66: Checked her trichomes again and they are starting to amber up a bit more. Her fan leaves are still fading hard and fast as well, although the flushing seems to have stopped any further deterioration of some of her sugar leaves near the top of the plant. The buds really haven't plumped up much, but I'm think she might only have a week left to go anyway. My plan is to take her down this weekend of early next week if she can hold it together.
20230610 - Day 73: Unfortunately, I injured my back 2 weeks ago and just haven't been able to stay on top of my grows. After taking her off all nutrients she stabilized and is about ready for harvest as the trichromes are about 20 - 30% amber mid plant. She'll be coming down later this week.
20230617 - Day 80: Looks like today is going to be harvest day. She hasn't quite hit 30% amber on her trichromes, but I want to do a bit of a test run with drying her out in this larger tent before taking down my other photoperiod plant to hang with her. My plan is to let her hang for 14 days at 63F and 60% RH and then trim her up for curing. This may be a longer dry than necessary, but I'm taking off on vacation and don't really have any other options at the moment. Here's to hoping to doesn't get too dry. Regardless, I've learned a lot of what not to do during this grow and hope to improve next time. I'm just glad I get any flower from her at all after all that she's been through.
I do hope to grow this strain again in the near future with a little more experimentation. This time around things didn't go super smoothly, but I learned a lot from my first grow experience.
