Germination date: March 12, Flowering Start Date: April 18, Targeted Harvest Date: June 21 First People's Day Starting with Genetics we have Runtz Muffin. This strain is special. It's an F5 or it says on packaging not sure if that's related to strain generations or just packaging. I am aiming for high THC and hard hitting effect and Barney's Farm promises to deliver all that and more. I've never grown it before. This is my second run with DWC but I'm confident that I can break my harvest records. Forr my setup I have a basic DWC bucket I thew together online shopping and at my local organics shop. If you’re looking for DWC tips I have plenty in this diary. DWC tip#1: buy a calmag supplement! Please read on as I address many issues you’ll probably face. Don’t be in reaction mode like me trying to catch up read to the end. I germinated using a rock wool cube (next time I'm using the aero cloner as this did lead to rooting issues later), PH treated solution, a heat mat (on247) and grow dome. Once the roots popped out a bit I placed it in the basket with hydroton pebbles buried deep enough to catch moisture from the bubble action. I bought a water temperature regulator so that it can survive those cold snap nights -20c. Did I mention it was cold? My Philizon grow light heated my Grow Garden tent sufficiently to 25 when sealed and dropped to 18 at night except for those really cold nights. I have not perfected mid summer DWC cooling and controlling conditions. It's too hot; Instead, I choose to time flowering period for the late spring. I believe the cool nights may help the development of terpenes.

I covered the basket with hydroton pebbles after this pic to prevent light leak into my reservoir. I also buried the rockwool to prevent algae growth. I rinse my clay pebbles with PH treated water to avoid reservoir contamination. The major structural issues is primarily due to the cold temperature of the water in my reservoir. It was hitting -30c temps outside. It took me a minute for it to set in that my reservoir temperature was the culprit. I had a water temperature regulator ordered; in the meantime, she kind suffers slow growth and wilting. DWC tip#2: If your water is cold, get a water warmer; Alternately, you will see if water is too hot, get a water chiller. Both extremes are really something you can’t ignore you should have a solution before germinating your seed.

In this picture all was good. She was getting enough light. The temperature regulator was working and water was fine. I did not do any training yet.

Added first dose of voodoo juice to help roots which looked a bit brown. The brown deadening tips on lower leaves is a sign I let the water temps get low a couple nights in a row by accidentally unplugging the regulator. Cold water stops phosphorus intake and it has this brown spotting effect. The water temperature regulator unplugged for a few days before being discovered.

I removed the water temperature regulator after finding it had a red light leak in the reservoir causing a weird slime. The plant is having trouble absorbing phosphorous due to low water temps so I wrapped a heat mat around my bucket and taped it on snug until temperatures warm up. I renewed my reservoir to a clean bucket and nutrients to recommended dose. I also wiped my lines clean and replaced my air stones. It is the second week of dosing with Voodoo juice in flower and the once browning roots are now lively and white and expanding. DWC tip#3: I found the plant is happiest when the water line is 1 inch below the basket and have been only refilling to this line since. The roots I must stress NEED that extra air. When refreshing your reservoir pull your roots out and take note the water level and refill to there. I refilled to the basket line without taking into account the volume of roots and I was drowning my roots a couple times before noticing. Lack of oxygen lead to some harmful organism growth in my medium. This will ultimately affect the taste of my buds.

Third week into flower. The spring warmth and 8 hours of supplemental sunlight helps a lot. It sized up in the last week. My grow light is not sufficient to power the needs of my plant. I welcome cloudy days over the lamp. I started 12/12 on April 18. I did not want her to overgrow my 2x3 grow tent/dark room. Using scrog and tie downs. I refill my reservoir and have cut out voodoo juice from my regime for now and plan to renew reservoirs in a week.

According to a theory i made up, plants don't grow when you're looking at them. That's schroedingers equation. No clue how it is relevant. With that conclusion no pictures this week. DWC tip#4: what can go wrong will go wrong never get complacent. I should have been devising ways of keeping my reservoir cool in the coming weeks. If only I had Bud Factor X, Nirvana and Rhino Skin to amp up my ppms :'(

Tip#5: keep your reservoir cool in the heat! Invest in a water chiller and be done with it. I’ve been using frozen water bottles and wreaking havoc on my roots. I was also slow to put styrofoam blanket around my reservoir and wrap with aluminum foil. I should have had that all in place not being reactive to the heat. I've had her Outdoor all week approx 9 hours sun and 3 hours cloud/shade day. This week temperatures are soaring into the high 20s low 30s. To keep roots happy, I use ice bottles in my reservoir when hot. I try not to let the leaves go into full stress mode i'll just have them hovering near that point. I'm on the north facing slope so the shade arrives just when the plant is starting to stress out. Running grow tent lights 530am-530pm is most ideal you can get in my spot. I cover my reservoir so the sun doesn't penetrate my basket and heat can dissipate. Night temps are down to 12 outside but in tent it is stable above 17c. I planned for budding in this weather window because of the temperature drops is said to help with terp development. The second picture shows how important calmag is to healthy growth. Experience with RO water has taught me a lot about plant calmag intakes. Too much you'll burn tips and chance lockout, not enough can cause widespread cell death and slow growth. I halfing her calmag dose now she's in 4th week of flower. I'm also removing big bud from my nutrient line after this week's reservoir change. Midway through the week wildfires are raging creating ideal conditions I don't have the resources to mimic. high CO2 ppms and high red spectrum light. High UV light which is damaging is being refracted into more absorb-able light. Temperatures also didn't peak above 32c today with the smoke cover and haze breezy winds: it peaked at a balmy almost perfect 27c. My prayers go out to those affected by the wildfires. LST training today opened up more bud sites to the light. Now she no longer fits in the 2x4 darkroom tent so I had to modify a lil. Stretch phase done It’s nearing end of week and she's drinking two 1.75 litre pitchers of solution. I refreshed my reservoir and will top up with a more concentrated solution as I think she's getting more piggy. I added h2o2 to reservoir at the wend of the week.

Day 36: I’m in reaction mode. My roots balled up around my air stone setup. I had a 1.5 inch pawfly air stone and a big one. It could not get the right coverage. I replaced the big one with two 1.5 air stones on a splitter. I placed them for even bubbling around the bucket. The roots unwrapped and started hanging freely again almost immediately. I don’t know how much root death occurred but the white is coming back noticeably. I’m going to add h2o2 to solution to rinse then refresh my bucket again to stop or stall negative organic growth that occurred. DWC tip#6: buy your air stones in bulk. DWC tip#7: learn about using peroxide to help with root development and health. Maybe hydro guard or bennies. DWC tip #8: use fresh from the store RO water when watering. Fresh RO water has an electrical charge around 6.0. It settles to 7.0 after 24 hours. That means using fresh ro when you feed hits a nice range of ph levels as it settles throughout the day. RO water has NO calmag so you absolutely need to supplement that after your regular nutrient program if it hasn’t already. When refreshing my reservoir I decided to put in brand new air stone setup as pictured. I’m questioning the power of my air pump . It’s a top fin 4000 which should be enough for one bucket. For now, I’ll see how this goes. There was no sun for two days of this week. I’m letting her be gloomy and hopefully trick her into growing harder when it is sunny.

The canopy top is at 21 inches tall while the longest branch reached 25 inches long. Yeah I finally got a proper measuring tape. Temps are cooler today 21c high. H2o2 treatment is still ongoing. I know a few more things now then i did when I started. The roots were attacked my pythium spores. I pulled the roots out rinsed them best I could and put them into a clean bucket with h2o2. I'm getting a little more vigorous with the frozen ice treatment. gladly this week is cooler. I didn't notice my reservoir is warm in the AM so i started icing earlier. I'm going to give her roots another rinse and refresh the pot as its my cheapest fix at this point. Mature calyxs are coming in with a little orange. Still clear maybe 5% milky at this point. She's pushing back on nutes now so lowering the dose and using Overdrive. Rue the day: I found a single strand of spider mite silk flickering in the morning light. Yes signs of the dreaded 'borg mites are back. Warmer weather is great but it also means my biggest enemy. I've taken advantage of the colder spring weather best I could to avoid this problem. They're strait ninjas I tell you because as soon as they spot me boom they scramble out of sight. I'm going to give her a week or more before i flush. If left unchecked these cyborgs can go out of control wrapping whole buds overnight. My fix for now is to make a H2o2 solution and spray the fan leaves at night to deter any hatching. Gladly with the DWC there is no soil for them to flourish like they've done in days past. I've also disinfected my buckets and surrounding area with h2o2.

Day 50 Flower: So far the last few cold nights have kept any 8 legged pests away: fears averted. A couple Hoverflies have been patrolling. After a quick google search I read they eat aphids so I think we're friends. Night time temps dipped as low as 5c while daytime temps were 22-24c with sunshine 95% of the time. I keep it indoor until 10am when it warms up so that morning photosynthesis isn't inhibited. I am aiming for 100g in 100 days so these last two weeks w may be tougher to keep her happy as temperature is rising into the high 20s(c). The one day i let her sit in the sun at 28c i noticed the top calyxs suffered UV damage and caused minor fox tailing. From then on if temperatures peaked above 26, my procedure is to shade it. I've made more frozen water bottles to circulate in and out of my reservoir every two hours. Root health has improved they are looking pretty good and the water is always kept cold to touch. I haven't used h202 in a few days. She smells more and more everyday! The smell drenches fabric and my darkroom smells for hours after taking her out for the day. Day 52: Temps hit 32c high today. I had to put the plant in the porch shade by 1230 when it peaked over 26c. Circulation fan on full blast keeps her happy and fox tail free (knocks on wood) She's drinking like a sailor close to 5 litres+/- in this heat. When i refresh the reservoir i give her a heavy dose 4ml/L. Then when topping up the reservoir I only use 2ml/L. Day 53: Trichrome inspection with a loupe confirmed its mostly cloudy with over 25% still clear as glass.

Day 96(57 flower): a haze of smoke is filling the valley air. It was daylight at 420 am because the smoke and fog were spreading the suns light even though it was still a ways over the horizon. The smoke is adding co2 and brightness level is at a high. I’ve let the temperature drop to 8c on some nights and she didn’t change a tone in colour. The Orange Sherbet traits are dominant in this plant. Day 97: development is at its peak trichromes are ripening with at least 10% amber. I’m flushing with Ph'd water and h2o2 for the last few days. Weather outlook is bleak with mostly rainy and cloudy in til harvest date. That being sad I clocked a total of more than 45 out of 63 days of good sun for this flowering period. Including a lot of phenomenal days with perfect highs/lows and only 8 days of hot stressful weather over 28c. Day 99: Around 90% of hairs have turned orange. The trichromes are sitting at around 30% amber mostly cloudy and still some clear. Its been 36 hours with no nutrients and she's still growing lush n green. It's very dark outside today so it is my grow light's turn to shine. June 19, 2023: 11:21 am: I tied all my colas up to the light. Idk if its been done but I'm calling it brunching (branch bunching). A technique I use when a plant used to outdoor sunlight is brought indoors to a lower light setting. My light footprint is small so I tie all the colas to go from covering a 3ftx3ft area to a 1.5ftx1.5ft essentially halfing the square area to benefit the colas and ensure maximum efficiency in lighting. I did end up removing a number is leaves that blocked light penetration as well.

I think I completed my 100 day goal with success. Let's be honest I was sloppy. I missed a few days of putting her to sleep on time. I might have over or under fed her. I might have over trimmed. I could have done more time in vegging but the roots fit nicely in the pot by end of flower with minimal complications. I didn't notice my circulation fan was severely lacking in power until I saw my buddy's stand fan in action just pushing his plants over like real wind. The fan alone allowed his trichomes and calyx hairs to be almost twice as long and swollen at an early stage of flowering. My plant was a little short of 'dripping' but I’m happy with the outcome. There are many things I plan to improve upon as this was my trial run in DWC with RM. The smell is very pungent.
