A-Team Twenty20 Mendocino brings a new round of genetics to the table. I’ve been out of the grow for awhile but I’m happy to be back at it. Strains:
Spice Girl #1 (Girl Crush #26 x The Spice #19)
West Coast Sour (Sour Diesel #13 x Sour Diesel #4)
Sugar Bowl (Sour Snow x MMXX #48) IX
Prosecco (Strawberry Blonde x Gran Champagne)
Update: on day 5 the germinated seeds were sowed into their cells. On day 6 they emerged!
Update, Day 14: I usually wait a little longer before starting “Veg” cycle, but GD doesn’t allow for more than one week of germination. It would be great to see a “seedling” stage added to the cycle before Veg😉 . So, I’m just cramming two weeks of growth into the germination stage and next week will be the first week of Veg!
All the girls have emerged and look great. I started my IPM after waking up and seeing a green bottle fly on my girls. I couldn’t tell if it defecating or laying eggs, but I had to wipe off some black nasty spots off the leaves where it was laying. These flys don’t feed off of vegetation like leaves, and are even known to be great pollinators. However, they are also know to carry diseases and viruses that can be transferred to humans and plants alike. I’ll be foliar spraying with Mercenary for the next few day, then switch to once a week for routine IPM practice.
Veg Week 1
Due to very bad weather conditions our area has been without power for 3 days. The girls were located to a sunny window while the power is out. I’m counting my blessings because they are still so small and easy to transport. I didn’t have to worry about light schedules or moving 5 gallon pots with scrogs attached. Hopefully this week will end with power being restored and we can continue.
As soon as I get lights back on the girls will be transplanted into their 5 gal pots.
Veg Week 2
Little problems followed after a total of 5 days without power. The girls got a little leggy and were transplanted at the beginning of this week. They showed droopy leaves and light green leaves. This told me immediately they were not accessing the available nutrients in the soil. Slurry tests from a few samples of the worse looking girls showed pretty good ppm in the soil, but the pH was in the 5s. This is much too low for the plants to access the nutrients they need with a calcium based nutrient line.
I performed a corrective flush with Herculean Harvest with a pH of 7. This will help raise the pH of the soil and the calcium in the Herc will bind with the nutrients in the soil, allowing the plants to take what they need. I’ve also been foliar spraying to help with the nitrogen deficiency.
The new growth has been much better. You can tell from the first couple of the stretchy nodes compared to the compact new green growth. No more droopy leaves and they are starting to green up. I’ll do some more slurry testing at the end of the week to see where we are at in the root zone.
Veg Week 3
Spice Girl is still struggling. The root zone wasn’t receiving enough oxygen, so I did some rearranging of the exhaust and the circulating fan and even finally built and hung a new door for the grow room. Just need to put the moulding and trim on and it’s good to go!
When looking at all the girls in the grow room, Spice Girl was the furthest away from the part of the room getting the air exchange. Must have been a “dead” spot. The next girls are West Coast Sour, looking to be slightly better off than the Spice Girls. And in the Goldilocks zone we have Sugar Bowl and Prosecco, looking absolutely amazing.
I’m sure the changes to the room will give adequate air exchange and I will be getting another fan to further improve it. This is a prime example of how important fresh air exchange is in the grow room. I took what environment I provided the girls for granted and it ended up biting me in the butt. The movement of air BELOW the canopy is just as important as the air movement between the canopy and the light.
I also topped the girls this week. All were 6 nodes deep and all topped above the 3rd node. Now we watch the side branches make their way into the scrog!
Veg Week 4
All the girls are healthy and back on track. I’ve fixed my air circulation issue and soil pH is back in check. I’ve been alternating foliar sprays everyday and they love it. Using the Bloom Khaos lets the nodes grow really tight and compact, which in my case with the new scrog in place, has shown to be a good problem to have. I should have taken the height down a couple inches because the have a few inches to go before reaching the screen. That’s okay. Maybe a couple more weeks and we should be weaving out towards the edge.
I did accidentally break one of the main “4-way” branches on one of the West Coast Sour girls. I always break at least one somehow.
Week 5 Veg
Seems like this week flew by. Not much to note for this week. The girls are stretching into the screen, tho a few still have a couple inches before they actually have branches weaved into the screen. A did a light defoliation on the larger fan leaves. They definitely look skinny now!
I really hope we can get 75-85% of the screen filled soon so we can flip to 12/12. They have been putting 2 inches of growth each week, so it could take another 3 weeks at this rate. We are literally at the bottom of the barrel with medicine and chop day is still very far off.
Week 6 Veg
Just finished week 6. I’m giving the girls one last week of Veg growth and then I’m flipping to 12/12. As much as I’d like to keep filling the scrog, time constraints won’t let us go that far. The stretch will fill in a lot of space, but I’m not expecting a full screen this time and that’s okay.
I topped all the girls on their main branches so it gives some time for them to redirect energy to forming side branches before switching to flower.
Spice Girl is still a couple weeks behind due to their condition after transplant. I don’t expect them to catch up to the other girls, so I moved them closer together and brought in a couple Triks Autos to fill in the space.
West Coast Sour is an obvious candidate for scrog styles. She sent off plenty of even side branches that fill in the screen wonderfully. Prosecco and Sugar Bowl are doing great, but instead of side branches we are seeing the main branches just stacking ridiculous amounts of nodes on top of each other. This would be amazing to see flower out without topping, but now I’m interested in what these nodes do after they have been topped.
Week 7 Veg
This was the last week of Veg. I managed to complete the door I had to hang for the grow room to make it light proof, and after only a few modifications the girls are ready to flip. I also did a heavy defoliation mid way into the week. You can’t tell from the pics tho. They definitely don’t mind a good trim. I’m surprised at how much they have grown in this last week.
I raised the intensity of the light to 80% and keeping height at around 8” above the canopy. I am continuing to tuck branches under the screen until the end of week 4, or when the stretch comes to an end, whichever comes first. I will do one final heavy defoliation at the end of week 3.
Week 1 Flower
We made it thru week 1 from the flip. Girls still growing like weeds. I had to integrate some LST clips in certain areas, specifically on areas that I topped. These branches turned to rock hard nubs so the side shoots ended up above the canopy. It shouldn’t be a huge deal as long as I can keep them as close to the scrog as I can until we see flowers.
Most of the branch’s nodes are exposed to the light and even with other branches for the most part. I’m looking forward to seeing what these nugs will look like.
Week 2 Flower
Wrapping up week 2 of flower and already we have some nice looking budlets. These girls didn’t waste any time transitioning to flower mode. I like what I see with the node stacking and flower development so I’ve stopped tucking branches.
In the middle of this coming week I will perform one more heavy defoliation session to get maximum light exposure and they will be basically untouched after that. I will most likely cut foliar sprays at the end of this week as well.
I’m eagerly looking forward to all the flavors and smells that this garden will give us! Their little cousin Triks Auto is already stanking up the place in the best way.
Week 3 Flower
Girls are looking great! Flower sights are set and are even covered in a light frost already. I did a heavy defoliation halfway thru the week. Now all the flower sites that didn’t see light are developing.
I’m not happy with the uneven canopy with this grow. These girls were so quick to recover from topping and LST, that a lot of the main branches went from a bendable soft tissue to solid, unbendable branches almost overnight. For a scrog grow, this turned into a problem. For the plants themselves, it’s a good problem to have. I need to move the scrog screens closer together so I’m able to tuck the branches before they are too hard to bend. Cutting back on the Kraken in my feed can help this problem too, as it is used to build strong and healthy cell walls. Almost too strong!
Overall, this Twenty20 gear has consistently left me surprised. Good genetics combined with good nutrition has left me with plants that really haven’t shown stress from training at all. It’s almost like they ignore it completely. Even with all the accidental snapping of branches, I have seen no lag in growth.
I will have to add weights to the wood scrog on the next grow. Even with a full canopy I’ve never seen it lifted off the ground.
Week 4 Flower
We have cruised right along in week 4. Not much to note on this week. I’ve been sampling some trichomes off of some of the fan leaves. I’m getting everything from sweet candies to straight burnt rubber in this garden. Definitely going to enjoy this buffet of tastiness! I’ll really get in there this week and get an early profile on all of them for you guys.
