Grow Questions

Is it okay to top autos? If yes, does it matter if it's at the 4th, 5th or 6th node? Is one better than the other besides the shape/size differences that they'll cause later? Many thanks in advance!

While it is generally recommended not to top autoflowering plants, it is indeed possible to do so. I've been cultivating for seven years, and I started topping autoflowering plants from my second grow. I've personally experienced increased yields as a result. However, it's crucial to perform the topping before the plants start showing their gender to avoid any potential stress. Remember, every grower's experience can vary, so it's important to assess your own plants and make informed decisions based on your observations. Good luck with your cultivation!

Could you recommend me a watering schedule for autos in 70/30 coco/perlite in 15L (4gal) pots? Would more frequent but smaller waterings be better? How much PPM should I aim for when I feed? Alternating feeding/watering? Anything important that I missed from the nutrients? Thanks

soilless -- -you fertilize every irrigation with 10% runoff... simple as that. total concentation of a well-balanced feed around 1,3 to 1,5 EC. this doesn't include what your tap adds, so it likely measures higher. 6,0 to 6,2 pH is great. little off either way is okay too. how much? too many factors at play. depends on your intentions too. Simple context - you wait for top layer to change color then re-fertigate with 10% runoff (waste). You can determine volume needed if you irrigate at a similar point each time. Feel the weight of the pot. that loss of weight is equal to the amount of water you'll need to add. After your first cycle, you'll have a better idea of how much you need to mix up. Be religious about that 10% runoff and it is impossible to have a buildup caused by any mineral retention in the substrate. if you feed somethign out of balance, you'll still end up with a toxicty or deficiency. It'll also maintain your substrate pH. The idea is a consistent charge and balance of nutrients that results in best growth rates being ever-present. frequent fertigations can match hydro growth rates. this takes a bit more familiarity. the size of pots must match rate your plants drink to avoid root rot etc. get a few grows in before tackling that complexity.

Hey growmie! Welcome to coco and autos! I did my first coco/perlite grow at the start of the year, will never use soil again. Autos I wasn't too sure about, but after having grown and smoked 10+ plants now, I am comfortable and confident with them and their results. For my little 4x4 600w setup they are perfecto.

@@@@ObiWanCanopy, thanks growmie! That's kind of you! From my perspective they are all learning curves! I hope to do much better with my current series! More ladies have popped today so I am about to add the first weeks to several diaries! I like to use specific diaries of mine to highlight specific points. I don't offer 2nd hand advice, only my own experience, and I have diarised evidence of much of that knowledge. So when I am giving people advice I like to link to the diary that is relevant to their case.

Hey mate, seeing early Mg def signs on several plants Up the CalMag dosage.
ObiWanCanopy
ObiWanCanopy
@UnorthadoxDude, I'll fertigate again later today, it should be almost impossible to overwater them at this point. And I'll start to water them every 2nd or 3rd day with a lot of water, probably like 2L / plant so there'll some runoff and I'll up the nutes to 700-800 ppm with a lot of Mg. (I feed them at every watering but until this point it was more like 400-600 ppm). Thank you for all your time and advice! You're absolutely right and your comments are really appreciated! 😊 Happy growing!✌️

@@ObiWanCanopy, I am unsure if the change in nutrients you state here is enough. Usually I would say, wait a week to find out (plants respond much faster in coco than soil). However I don't think you should wait a week here. That one plant is really struggling with it, losing leaves is late stage, I'd really recommend focusing on fixing the one glaring problem that you can see symptoms of on your plants (Mg def), before switching things up significantly.

@UnorthadoxDude, Yeah, you're right about the Mg situation, especially the SZ is full of yellow stripes between the veins on almost all the leaves. I forgot to update the feeding info, but as of the last watering I started to give them Bud Candy which is supposed to be Mag-Sulphur and carbohydrates (AFAIK) and Bud Factor X which also contains some Mg - in addition to the Cal-Mag they get for another 2-3 weeks then I plan to switch over completely to the bloom Mg products. Hopefully that will be enough. Do you think I should still up the Cal-Mag just to be safe?

I assume you're following the advice people give to reduce the nutes for autos. Your plants were doing amazing, but they look small/behind to me now. I really think you need to be feeding them more.

@@ObiWanCanopy, thank you for the kind words, Karen diary was my first full diary and I put a lot into it! Not all my diaries have so many words!
ObiWanCanopy
ObiWanCanopy
@UnorthadoxDude, Wow! You managed to bring Karen back from the brink of death and made her thrive! I've only had time to read the first few weeks and I found it's an excellent reading material, so I'll definitely read through the whole diary when I get home from work (and probably all your other diaries too 😁). I feed them at every watering, but with very little amount of nutrients as I come from the (hot-) soil-world and photoperiod plants, which is very different from coco/perlit+autos. Uniformly feeding all 4 strains was a big mistake, caused by my laziness and habit of avoiding micromanaging the plants - which normally is not a (big) problem when you have just one strain in a tent. Happy growing! ✌️

@@ObiWanCanopy, I don't test PPM. I've been growing plants for 40 years, I'm new to cannabis but I am a life long horticulture enthusiast. So I do most things by "feel" or by "eye", I "listen" to the plants. Again I have less than a year of experience with coco, but since using it for cannabis, I have also started experimenting with it on houseplants, carnivorous plants, vegetables, cuttings, garden soil improvement. For most of my cannabis plants I have fertigated every other day, and that is my baseline, although I impose strategic droughts.

Hi Apolo @Sweet_Seeds, Thank you! She's an absolute beaut! She seems extremely resistant to inexperienced growers🤪😁 I'm sure she'll turn out great if I manage to figure out how to water them properly. Cheers!
