Grow Questions

MinnesotaMarijuanastarted grow question a year ago
I want to begin feeding my plants nutrients this next week. I have nutrients with NPK values of 0-0-1 and 2-4-1. I am using water from a stocked fish tank. Do I use nutrient infused water with every watering? So daily pretty much? Or should some watering be just water?

Hi, first of all you dont need to water every day. quite the contrary, during the early vegetative stage your plant won't need that much water and give the soil some time to dry is of good health to the plant (a dry period). With regards to nutrients,I give nutrients every time I water, if I notice that I might be approaching a salt buildup I might skip 1 feeding session and gice it plain water only but this is the exception. Good luck with your grow, if you need anything else feel free to drop me a message and I can send you a couple of articles on the topics you want. (for the most part RQS has vrry good articles)

I'm guessing this is nutrient lockout. Yesterday they were thirsty, so I watered by usual two gallons of aquarium water, but added no other nutrients. It only seems like one plant is being affected. How long should I withhold any nutrients; should I dial back when I do resume?

Burnt edges and leaf tips suggest nutrient burn. I see some of your leaf tips are turned downward. Overall your garden looks ok. Flush your plants soil with clean pH 6.2 water and let them dry out. Then re-feed but with a reduced strength solution.

Nice lookin' plants you got. But boy, I'm worried about your tent getting light leaks with having/allowing your cats on it lol. I have my tent in a room that my cat only goes into when I'm in just to make sure. She's tried once already to climb it with her claws... Anywho, as a new grower myself, I'm reading here you are going to Top earlier next time? What week or day did you Top them? When will you try to Top them next? Do you recall how many nodes they had? After what node did you Top them at? Good stuff though. Going to have to read your whole journal here later today. Pretty much the same setup I have.

It will depend on various factors such as the richness of the soil, and the size of pot and plant. If you use a nutrient rich substrate the plants should not need anything in the first 3 weeks. Just a root bost for the first week. If, on the other hand, you use a light mixture, you could start in the 2nd week, but always depending on the size of your plants, the ones you are showing right now should not need anything, they are still so young and small.

I'm on day ~55, Seedsman WW, also in MN weirdly enough. One of mine responded very poorly to the UV coming on in week 6 and are looking about as crispy as yours; guess it wasn't healthy enough to withstand it. I'm looking at starting harvest this week, but I'm going to have to use a rolling harvest. Lower nugs just aren't looking ripe yet. When do you think you'll harvest?

@MinnesotaMarijuana, Ha, I'm actually running the dehumidifier at night to keep it below 50%. I have tanks and plants all over my living space. I saw your comment about aquariums and definitely agree about how most people test pH. I love API's test bottles. Cheap, accurate, but cumbersome to use regularly. Beyond the obvious, you can use it to test actual soil ph. I make a supertanate solution by vigorously mixing soil samples with distilled water, than covering with cling wrap. Once it separates, you take a sample from the top clear layer with a pipet or syringe or just decant it carefully; it might take 24-48 hours maybe far more if the dirt is mineral rich/clay. Test the clear samples like you normally would with API's kit. (Take it with a grain of salt, I got the idea from someone's undergrad research that found API to be more accurate than off the shelf soil specific test kits and reasonable compared to professional testing.) I look forward to seeing your harvest. Good on you for sharing!

@JazzBerries, I'm not turning the humidifier on because I'm concerned with bud rot. I already made enough mistakes on my first grow! Yes, I'm a little sad about the buds not getting real big. I haven't really smoked for 20 years except for here and there, so I'll have plenty with enough to give away. I might not be able to experiment with edibles very much. I've dried a couple buds that I cut accidentally or were on stems that I pruned and it isn't "one hit shit" but pretty on par with what was going around when I was a kid that was good weed. Better than most of the stuff we bought. I want to start up again right away, but I don't want to leave styrofoam in the window for the air ventilation exhaust. Thanks for the look, and good luck with your grow!

@MinnesotaMarijuana, I should have been more specific. I'm on day 137, but they sat in veg, under minimal care, for a very long time while I finished the last grow of autos. It's been over 8 weeks since I completed the transition to 12/12. Mine are looking CRISPY/fade starting to creep into the sugar leaves. I don't know if I can keep it up without risking bud rot from dead plant material getting closer and closer to the buds. It sucks that I'll probably end up with another batch of slightly under-ripe, not fully realized buds, but its all a learning process. Now I know to take it VERY EASY on the UV and light this late as well as keep the bloom nutrients flowing until the end. Also modified my home mixed potting soil with additional coir and vermiculite to help the micro-nutrient/mineral content and prevent compaction. Cheers, take care, and enjoy the legal bud!

@RallosZek, I topped week 4 for all plants despite the last Purple Ghost Candy being so far behind. The White Widows I think were on their fourth node As time went by the PGCs really turned it on, and the "runt of the litter" is now the tallest plant. I really like how the last PGC, which was only on its second or third node, bushed out in a way the other plants didn't. I think I could have done some pretty serious training with how much it bushed out, but unfortunately it was so far behind at first I couldn't even really bend it around the trellis, and by the time it got big enough the WWs were dominating the grow space. I'm amazed at the difference in the strains' growth. The White Widows came on strong, and accordingly, dominated space and attention. I did not expect the Purple Ghost Candies to rally so much in the final weeks of vegetation and into flowering. It's my first grow, and in the future I will grow fewer plants. Probably two, but never more than three again. I'll also stick to one strain. It's so crowded, and the PGCs have really been pushed to the side. I'll also add in ph testing and PPM. I might look at some other nutrients. The cats are pretty good, it's mostly our Lycoi that finds herself on top but she's only 5 lbs, rarely goes up there, and I've seen no damage. The only possible light leaks I've seen is from the vents at the bottom of the tent. I'm not sure if I want to start another grow this winter as I have to vent the inline outside, and I don't want styrofoam in the window all winter. One interesting note is that I have run the oscillating fan from AC Infinity the entire grow and it is still going great. Day 55 I added another fan to circulate air more and reduce humidity. Some budget fan off Amazon. That fan lasted maybe three weeks before the oscillator wore out. Bazooka Growers Oscillating 6" fan for 27 bucks. Should have just spent a bit more for another AC Infinity fan.

@@MowerGrower, I'd like to have some versatility to the light brightness. I haven't tested my lights, but I just don't know if it has the range to limit intensity like that throughout the grow. I am thinking about adding another of the same lights, 200W Ionboard S24 from AC Infinity, to the grow tent so I can more gradually increase brightness throughout the grow.

I see what you mean, looking compact, yet happy. Photos will stretch when flipped to flower, usually takes 2-4 weeks after flipping. Maybe Seedsman can give you an idea of how much she'll stretch.
MinnesotaMarijuana
MinnesotaMarijuana
@Reggetable, I've heard you can expect them to about double in height after entering flower. That is what I will plan for. I am going to go ahead and keep all four plants in the tent, just give priority to the two best ones. So it may get a little crowded. Topped this week and getting a lot of secondary growth even just a few days after doing so.

Are you testing Ph in the soil?
MinnesotaMarijuana
MinnesotaMarijuana
@@MowerGrower, I used aquarium water the whole grow with the idea that nutrients from the fish might help out some. Having some experience with ph testing from aquariums, I'm skeptical of the devices people use to test ph, and actual litmus paper or chemical tests are so expensive to be doing every watering. However, I think I will try something for my next grow. People who know a lot more about growing than me seem to use them with great success.
MowerGrower
MowerGrower
@MinnesotaMarijuana, if you use distilled water you don’t need to do anything with ph it comes at 7 but the reaction to air puts it at 5.8
MinnesotaMarijuana
MinnesotaMarijuana
@Seedsman, I am not. I was thinking Ph and ppm would be some things to get into on the next grow. I've removed affected leaves and am withholding nutrients for two feedings. The brown leaves are not spreading. I've learned a few things so far: Grow one strain at a time, reduce number of plants to two, maybe three at a time, top earlier, start seeds with paper towel method or water and plant directly into 5 gallon pots. I might add the Cal/Mag to nutrients next time (we have really hard water and never thought Ca supplementation would be necessary. I've always felt I was somewhat conservative with adding nutrients (although its not really possible to know how much nitrates are being added with the aquarium water), I'm glad I was taking that approach now.
