bigolebuds Week 1: You'll notice in my other Watermelon Zkittles diary we did a major defoliation before going into flower! This is when we noticed a number of branches that didn't have much potential to create big buds, buttt they were perfect clone candidates! We'd been letting the mother plant grow without SCROG for over 2 months, and she was very healthy when we took the cuttings. The two mothers came from a group of 5 original seeds, so we will see if there are differences in the pheno's as we take the mother into flower. We chopped these from mom around 10/20 and put them into Root Riot cubes with a small amount of Mycorrhizae, soil surrounding the cube, and CloneX to ensure root growth.

bigolebuds Week 2: Day 1:After 15-20 days in the cubes we potted the clones up to solo cups and cleared out any clones that weren't doing well. We planned to up pot these to 2 gallons, but in the interest of maximizing root health (and seeing the rootball) we went with clear solo cups. This tent is looking like we are running a real grow operation 😂😅 I wish we knew the pheno's for each of these before we labelled them, but the same way we ID the pheno's in our flower tent, we will eventually do for these clones and in the future we will give them numbers until we ID them. I'd also like to do more testing of different fertilizer and watering programs this grow, but I know that will come with time. We are doing a test of some plants with Mycorrhizae and some without, so I'm excited to see how that goes. We are actually also testing two different types of mycorrhizae as well Dynomyco and Xtreme Mykos with everything else as controls. Once we have any updates on that comparison this blog will be the first to know. Day 3: WOW! The roots on these things are growing like crazy! The Watermelon Skittles strain is a quick root producer. It had roots popping out of the Root Riot cubes when we planted them, and 8 hours later had reached the edges of the cup! At this point we can see the roots all around the cups on all of the plants. We are thinking we will need to up pot them before our big trip to Rio at the end of the month.. but will be keeping a close eye on them! We think a total veg time of 2 months is what we are shooting for.

Are roots disturbed by light? Is it safe to grow in a clear solo cup? I want to be able to see the roots (so I'm using clear cups), but I'm wondering if I should cover them with another cup or insulation of some type.

Hey bigolebuds! On the specific pic you shared the root ball is quite nice already. Probably time to transplant to bigger pot. Truly it is not good for the roots to get exposed to light, although you are not the first to use transparent cups. They will be just fine if it is temporary phase, and you move them to final pot after noticing the root development. If you want to help it a bit, you may cover them with aluminium foil and only expose to light when inspecting the roots. My very first grow was an auto all the way till the end in transparent 8l water bottle. It survived and provided me with some nice results. But for sure it did not help her to thrive. Enjoy the grow!

bigolebuds Week 3: After much discussion and a few posts on the blog, we slipped our transparent cups into Red Solo Cups to prevent the roots from being exposed to light. We are debating doing this entire grow in solo cups, but need to do some research on how large we should let them get before transitioning to flower. To be honest, it seems like we should make the switch this week... Most especially because we will be traveling over the next two weeks (NOLA, HOU, RIO). Prayers that we keep things looking good, but we have a plan for waterings every 2/3 days, so I think that will work. I think we might do another mycorrhizal test, because I'm not sure these clones were the most similar to begin with. Will update then.

How do you determine when to flip a photoperiod clone into flower? Once there's enough root development? Whenever you want based on availible space, resources, etc.? Combination of all factors?

I turn my girls over at the 18 inch mark. Plants will usually double to triple in size when transitioning to flower, so go by your room size, so as to not over crowd your ladies.

@Golden, Thanksss! I tried Baked Zkittles in Martha's Vineyard this summer and fell in love with the bud structure, so I'm hoping this comes close! Once i saw Watermelon x Zkittles was Leafly's strain of the month in June I said let's give it a try.

sweet roots you are showing . bit risky using a transpartent Cup, but for showing roots perfect. just be sure to cover them if you dont show us the roots, the plants say thank you, they dont like the light.
