@Crownlaura, They are nitrogen fixers that harbor beneficial bacteria within nodules that are attached to the roots. When you trim them, the nodules burst and release bacteria into the soil which is good for the microbiology. Aside from they, they have shallow roots and will wilt before the main crop acting as a visual indicator of a dry pot.
