@LockDownGrow, I'm assuming you are referring to autoflowers because I do defoliate differently for photoperiod strains. With an autoflower strain I don't take off any fan leaves until after a week or two of flowering. What I do is stand over the plant and look down through the canopy. What I'm looking for are large fan leaves that are blocking lower bud sites. While rotating the plant 90 degrees, I'll strategically remove some of the leaves while I'll tuck others below a bud site. If I topped the plant I'll remove the fan leaves that point towards the center of the pot as these are most likely to interfere with the other flower sites. You'll want to remove them sparingly. Think of the fan leaves as solar panels absorbing the energy from the sun. If you take too many off the growth will be stunted. I would recommend removing one or two a day as needed over the course of a couple of weeks. Finally, I'll remove these leaves at the base of the fan leaf as opposed to next to the stalk. The fan leaf stalk will dry up and fall off on its own while causing minimal stress to the plant. Sometimes I'll have to lollipop. Look at my Stardawg auto grow. Those plants have way too many fan leaves. Lollipopping is removing all of the lower growth that will never amount to anything. Good luck and happy growing!
