[Start date Seedling: 09/19/24]
So, I started a new run, focusing only on automatics. One of the seeds is from Mephisto Genetics. It is my first time growing a seed from them, and i'm already impressed, it is the most good looking of the 3 seedlings in this run.
I soaked the seed in Black Forest still water for about 48 hours. After that, a taproot appeared, so I planted the seed directly in the pot. The pot is a 20L fabric pot made by AC Infinity. The quality of the pot is really, really good. The seed wasn’t planted right in the middle, but off-center. I want to train my autos in this run to gain more experience with LST.
The soil is made of:
20% Pumice: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0CQM61X8S/
About 8/9% of activated Biochar/Charcoal: https://www.amazon.de/DIMIKRO-Pflanzenkohle-fein-gemahlen-Liter/dp/B07PNPQSXR
20% Worm Castings: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07SQDRXGC
50% of soil (Torffreie Kräuter und Aussaaterde): https://www.raiffeisenmarkt.de/gaertnerglueck-torffreie-kraeuter-und-aussaaterde-p-73816145
09/26/24 Short facts:
- watered 2 x 0.2l
- VPD @ 0.6
- Light @ 30% - ~420ppfd (AC Infinity ION Frame EVO 3)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The plant is growing really well, no problems at all.
On Day 3, I decided it was time to plant some clover as a cover crop. I now spray the top of the soil with a little water in the morning and evening. As you can see, the clover is already growing, it looks nice and more lively. I also don't have her under the humitidy dome anymore.
This is my first grow inside my grow tent, so I’m happy to be able to control more environmental factors, especially the humidity and therefore the VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit). I’m using the AC Infinity Cloudforge T3 (2nd Gen.). The VPD is currently set to 0.6. I programmed an offset of -2 degrees for the leaf temperature, which I measured. The actual difference is more like 2.6 degrees. (I use distilled water for the humidifier and added a few drops of tea tree oil to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi, and it also repels insects. Plus, it smells quite good.)
I watered the plant twice this week, 0.2L each time, with Silica Force, CalMag, and Root-Juice added.
She is now 5 cm tall, and I’m totally happy with the growth. But she is the smallest of the three plants. I think she is more compact, because she is getting about 50ppfd more, than the other two plants, so she isn't stretching that much.
10/03/24 Short facts:
- started LST on day 13
- watered 2 x 1l -- 2l
- VPD @ 0.7 -- raised by 0.1
- Light @ 40% - ~550ppfd -- increased by 10%
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry for being late with the second week update, but I was really sick.
This week, I increased the VPD by 0.1 because it wasn’t necessary to maintain such high humidity anymore.
Unfortunately, I’ve got problems with fungus gnats, which is probably no surprise because of the clover, which is growing very fast. Since I’ve been keeping the top layer of the soil moist every day for the clover, it allowed the fungus gnats to lay their eggs. To combat this, I used nematodes.
On Day 13, I decided it was time to start with LST. I used some soft garden wire to stretch the plant to the other side of the pot, exposing the side branches directly to the light. I startet lightly, because she was already leaning to the side.
AvT is currently the fastest-growing plant in the tent.
But that’s not surprising since it’s right in the middle, getting the best light exposure in my grow tent. Plus, it’s a plant from Mephisto Genetics, which is well-known and very stable. She is meeting every expectation i had.
10/10/24 Short facts:
- first signs of Preflower
- did continue with LST
- did cut some leaves
- watered 1 x 1,5l; 1 x 0,3; 1 x 1,2l
- VPD @ 0.8 -- raised by 0.1
- Light @ 50% - ~620 ppfd -- increased by 10%
- Bio-Grow dosage was increased
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry for not having more pictures and videos, I was still quite sick. Next week will be better.
Not much to report this week. I raised the light intensity to 50% and increased the VPD.
LST is going great. (It’s the first time I’m really trying to do it properly.) Nearly every day, I’ve had to adjust the LST. I also had to cut off some leaves because they weren’t getting much light anymore. She’s doing great and responding well to the LST.
10/17/24 Short facts:
- Continued with LST
- Watered: 1 x 1.2L, 1 x 0.3L
- VPD @ 0.9 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 50% ~580 - 620 PPFD
- Removed 5 leaves
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As promised last week, i made a video and explained the progress so far, and did show you the plant.
Not much to report. I continued LST, though I’ve stopped for a few days now since the branches are well spread out, and that should be enough for the time being.
The AvT was in Preflower since last week and switched to flower on day 28.
Really good plant. No problems at all.
10/24/24 Short facts:
- Continued with LST
- Watered: 1 x 1.2L, 1 x 1.5L, 1 x 1.2L -- 3.9L
- VPD @ 1.0 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 70% ~750 to 1000 PPFD
- Defoliation
- Nutrients increased and added: BioBizz Top-Max and Bio-Bloom
- No Root-Juice anymore
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I defoliated the AvT this week. I had to remove some of leaves so that the branches and their tops could get direct light. I really don’t like cutting off branches or leaves; it hurts me to see them like that afterward.
On that occasion, I also did a bit more LST, but that was the only session this week. There probably won’t be much more LST to do in the upcoming weeks.
I increased the light intensity and also upped the nutrients.
Thirst has increased.
10/31/24 Short facts:
- Continued with LST
- Watered: 1 x 1.3L, 1 x 1.5L, 1 x 1.5L — 4,3L
- VPD @ 1.1 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 80% ~950 to 1140 PPFD — increased by 10%
- Temperature has increased, dehumidifier and increased light output had their effect
- BioBizz Bio-Bloom increased to 2ml/L
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her buds got a bit bigger, and she also grew a few more centimeters. So maybe she could reach 50 cm in height? We’ll see.
She doesn’t look as green as she did a week ago. So, I hope the increased Bio-Bloom is helping. But I’ll probably need to add some bone meal. She’s the only plant that hasn’t shown any signs of nutrient deficiency, aside from looking a little less green.
She was a bit thirstier than the previous week. Maybe I should water with 2L in one session on one or two occasions in the upcoming week. Sometime next week, I’m planning to buy supplies for the Blumat drip system. (I’ll be gone for about a week soon, so I need to test the system beforehand.) I’ll test the system for a while before I’m away to see how it performs. It shouldn’t be bad for the plants to maintain a consistent moisture level.
11/08/24 Short facts:
- Watered: 1 x 1.5L, 1 x 0.5L, 1 x 0.3L, 1 x 1.5L, 1 x 1L, 1 x 1L — 5.3L
- VPD @ 1.2 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 80% ~950 to 1140 PPFD
- Added some Bonemeal
- Temperature has decreased to 25 to 26 degrees
- BioBizz Bio-Bloom increased to 2.5ml/L
- Added some Hesi Phosphor Plus
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like all the plants, she showed some signs of a slight deficiency in nitrogen and phosphorus. It wasn’t very bad, but I added 1.5L of water with 2.5ml of Hesi Phosphorus Plus. And I also added some bonemeal.
(This is why I also prefer to not deleave too much, so they can use their leaves to get some nutrition, if necessary.)
I was able to decrease the temperature inside the grow tent by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. I achieved this with a new setting in the AC Infinity app and by bringing in more air from the outside (it’s gradually getting colder; winter is coming!). I also increased the VPD to 1.2, so she could take up more water and nutrients. I still need to increase the amount of water she’s getting.
Overall, she’s doing fine. The buds are getting bigger, and she’s getting frostier. I’m sure the yield is going to be very good. Her buds are bigger and denser than the Grease Monkeys. But she also should be harvested earlier.
(Overall, I still need to improve my soil mix with more nutrients for the next run because I’m sure she could have been bigger. There was a lack of nutrients in the soil to begin with.)
11/14/24 Short facts:
- Watered: 1 x 2.0L, 1 x 0.5L, 1 x 1.0L — 3.5L
- VPD @ 1.3 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 80% ~700 to 1050 PPFD
- BioBizz Bio-Bloom increased to 2.5ml/L
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She still has some yellowing leaves, still not sure if is senescence or a lack of nitrogen. We'll see.
The buds are getting bigger and are smelling so good. The smell is so sweet and fruity!
11/21/24 Short facts:
- Watered: 1 x 0.5L, 1 x 0.75L, 1 x 1.5L, 1 x 1.75L — 3.5L
- VPD @ 1.4 — raised by 0.1
- Light @ 80% ~700 to 1050 PPFD
- BioBizz Bio-Bloom increased to 3ml/L
- BioBizz Bio-Grow increased to 3ml/L
- Getting colder! At night between 18 to 19°C
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She isn’t doing well, and her condition has worsened this week. Most of her leaves are now yellowing, with some completely dying off. I’m attempting to save her by ordering a special fertilizer designed to increase nitrogen, as well as provide magnesium and other essential minerals. I plan to feed her with it tomorrow. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to accept that she’s dying.
Unfortunately, she has also lost some of her fruity aroma, and the smell is no longer as strong...
I’ve seen reports from other growers about the AvT, showing cases of senescence, but it usually occurred only toward the very end. So, we’ll see if this is just a phenotype with an unusually early onset of senescence. She’s definitely harder to grow than I initially expected.
Since the weather is getting quite cold for the region - and we’ve already had a bit of snow - the cellar where my grow tent is set up is cooling down, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 18–19°C. Therefore, I’ve ordered some heat mats, which should arrive tomorrow. I’m aiming to stabilize the root temperature at around 22°C consistently, so the nights won’t be too cold anymore. I’ll go into more detail in next week’s update.
11/28/24 Short Facts:
Watered: 1 x 2.0L, 1 x 2.5L, 1 x 2.4L — Total: 6.9L
VPD @ 1.4
Light @ 70% (~700 to 950 PPFD) — decreased by 10%
Used a special nitrogen + magnesium fertilizer
Heat mat is now in use
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She’s doing better. I gave her a special mineral fertilizer containing nitrogen and magnesium. This brought some of the leaves back to life! They are green and looking much healthier now. So, I was right, it was a mix of senescence and nitrogen deficiency.
Finally, the heat mat arrived! I set the temperature to 27°C so the roots stay consistently warm. Excellent! It also helps maintain a nice temperature in the grow tent when the lights are off.
My Blumat equipment has arrived! I used the Blumat Digital Pro Plus for the first time, and it’s a real game-changer. I realized I had been underwatering my plants, which cost me a lot of growth potential. The plant could have been taller and yielded more. Now, I water about every second day with significantly more water.
For my next grow, I plan to use the Blumat drip system for automated watering. This will allow the plants to take up as much water as they need at any time. That should elevate my grows to a whole new level!
12/05/24 Short Facts:
Watered: 1 x 2.5L, 1 x 2.4L, 1 x 2.8L, 1 x 2.5 — Total: 10.2L
VPD @ 1.4
Light @ 70% (~700 to 950 PPFD)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing special happened this week.
The leaves are looking better, so I’m now 100% confident that it was a nitrogen deficiency combined with senescence.
The buds are also getting a bit bigger now. Maybe I’ll give her a little more time and harvest her after Christmas.
The Blumat Digital Pro Plus is really helpful, making my watering spot-on. Great tool!
12/12/24 Short Facts:
Watered: 1 x 2.4L, 1 x 2.5L, 1 x 2.5L — Total: 7.4L
VPD @ 1.4
Light @ 70% (~700 to 950 PPFD)
Stopped watering with fertilizers, only water, CalMag and Silicia Force
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve stopped watering with fertilizer because I’m planning to harvest her in the coming days.
You can already see that she’s slowly dying. I hope she’ll put all her remaining energy into her flowers in these final days.
I’m going to dry her, but only because there’s a new method I want to try. You can now place the harvested buds into a special plastic bag immediately after harvest. These bags are designed to let water out while preserving the terpenes almost completely intact. One of the German grow shops selling these bags tested different samples in a lab, and the results seem to support their claims.
If it works, great! If not and the harvest ends up molding, I don’t mind. 98% of the harvest will already have to be trashed due to the legal limit.
There is not much to say. But I'm going to grow the AvT again some time in the future, with less mistakes and reverse osmosis water. I could do a better job, than I have done here.
