I started this grow from clone using my TurboKlone. But this time I decided to try a different technique (fogponics) to start root growth. I replaced the pump and sprayer with a fogging mist maker. Rising water temps were still an issue but more easily managed and the roots appeared to have a greater tolerance at higher temps. In hindsight, I should have transitioned the clones into veg after 10 days but I was so impressed with root growth and development I let it run for another 5 days. This is definitely a technique I will continue to use. I was very impressed with the results.
I am now in the first few days of veg and using an RDWC method supplemented by a fogger. I have more than one inch of roots in water and the rest will be fed by the fogging water vapors. If this technique shows promise, i will lower the water levels and monitor. I would hope for continued growth with a better more efficient absorption of nutrients. We shall see.
Into the second week of veg and the plants are healthy but I expected a little more vertical growth. I spent way too much time this week checking in on them. I need to get the humidity up again and just leave them alone.
This week I topped and took out the bottom two nodes.
We are starting week 3 of veg and the overall growth seems to be progressing as expected. With Blue Dream in soil it has been my experience to see some purpling in some plants but not others. So I was not surprised to see the purpling in hydro. I stopped chasing the problem long ago. But this time I think I see some manganese deficiency. So the first thing I plan to do is bring down the PH. Or I may complete an early flush and pull back on my nutrients. I'll give it a day and do a little more investigating.
So we are entering week 4 and all is looking well. There was some good growth last week so I decided it was time to start the low stress training. I did raise the lights by nearly 24 inches earlier in the week as suggested by @B4RNS. I'll leave them at this height for another week before slightly bumping them down. Right now the roots are healthy and the plants look to be in a good place. I may top one more time next week and that will be it.
These past few weeks have been very busy and although my plants did not suffered the my journal entries have.
So this is the beginning of week five. The plants are healthy but the PPM seems a little high. I will drain and replace next week.
So this is the start of week six. My pictures did not come out too well. What is hard to see is the nutrient burn. I should have drained and replaced the water last week. We still have two more weeks Veg.
Started week 7 with a complete water change out. Fresh water fresh nutrients.
I also trimmed some fan leaves out that were not getting light and those damaged by nutrient burn. Then it was time for some additional low stress training. I'll put them into flower next week. I still need to work out my nutrient schedule and a transition plan. Mistakes made in transition will haunt the rest of grow.
I first want to thank everyone who had followed this grow and express my sincerest apologies for its failed outcome.
I am extremely embarrassed to report my girls died a horrible death and I hold myself responsible. My poor planning and failure to keep up with this their care lands squarely on me.
A month ago I had an unexpected work trip land in my lap. I originally expected to be gone for only a week. So I prepped them for my leave and left them in the care of a veteran outdoor grower. Again, I was only to be out of town for a week. One week turned into two and that turned into a month.
My veteran grower has a lot of experience outdoor but hardly any indoor. Had these girls been in soil, they may have stood a chance. But in hydro and the damage committed in week two of veg made the grow unrecoverable.
Here is how it all started. I was first told that one of my fittings must be leaking as water was covering the floor and the reservoir was near empty. So over the phone I was trying to identify where the leak was coming from. The issue issue should not have been so hard to determine. But there was a critical question I was not asking. What was the water temp in each bucket? The roots started to clog the return and over flow the buckets. That is where the water was coming from. Because there was no water circulation the water temps started to rise. But because I did not ask about water temps in the beginning, I continued to ask questions about a possible leak. As soon as was told about the high water temps it was too late. The damage was done and continuing on would be a waste.
So moving forward what should I do? Simple, grow in soil as it will be the most forgiving when or if I have to leave my girls with another.
Again, my sincerest apologies to all who followed and I hold myself completely responsible for horrific outcome.
That is an interesting comparison. The longer root hairs seem to be a result of the fogging technique. I did consider topping the root caps to encourage lateral root development but decided against it. I will keep my meddling below the soil line to a minimum for this grow.
Thank you for your interest. Any experience you choose to share is always appreciated.
Purpling is due to Mag deficiency. In your case there's too much light in your tent .
Adding Cal-Mag won't solve your problem until you dim your light or put it further.
Proper Mag def is rare, Mag def is mostly due to too much light or over watering (in media).
In your case it can't be over watering of course, you're using Cal-Mag and still having purpling, the only last solution is your light, your light is too powerful for this size of plant.
Your nootz solution is too hot by the way, you start to get nootz burn. What's the amount of ppm's in the res. ?
@JUNGLE_B4RNS, Thank you for the suggesting the light. Not sure what I was thinking when I increased the light but failed to raise it up. But it is all good now.
Stay on Veg nootz + Cal/Mag for the first 3 weeks of flowering, and add 250 ppm's of a 17% Nitrogen (17-0-0) supplements in the first 2 weeks of flowering if you can.
On week 4 you can switch to Flowering nootz + Mag/Sulfur and P-K Boosters for Indica's (start P-K boosters in week 5 for Sativa's).
@Mr_Di,you can slightly increase N for the first 3 weeks of flowering, they will super stretch, not really recommended if you don't have the space to grow monster plants.
@JUNGLE_B4RNS,
hi bro, i read of this kind of feed chart, N overboost for first 3 week of flo (or standard veg feed chart) , this metod shoud be encrease final size of plant...RIGHT?
Can you confirm this? Do they continue to grow more than usual by doing so? You know, I would try, but I do not have much space, I would not make a mistake...then with led, if i will have over 40 cm (vertical penetration) of canopy .....i will harvest little popcorn under this distance 😓
what is your feedback bro?
@8TrackBaby, i used dutch master gold in dwc and rdwc with excellent results. I also flowered with biobizz in my blue mystic grow diary with amazing results!
@HOW_i_GROW, It's RDWC. I might add one or two separate standalone buckets in the next grow and see if a different balance in nutrients make any difference. I may try a cheaper label than Fox Farm. We'll see. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks
@Fun_Growin, I have strawberries in it right now. But as soon as they are done and i pull the next set of clones I will put together some photos with a video. Creating a video for other cannabis growers will be new to me. So I hope not to come off as too laughable. Thank you for the interest.
I see and see your cultivation bro... mmm..here is nothing more beautiful than to see every corner of the growbox covered with leaves, branches and buds ... like it! I follow you with love 😍
Very nice looking grow room, 8. Your girls are looking great.
Promise me you won't go into flower until you have a full canopy. i.e. you can't see your the ground for your foliage. ;-)
btw. I think Barnes is seeing inter veinal chlorosis stage 1 which means too much light is falling on your girls.. Great idea to back your light off. I doubt you would need more than a 100 watts on your garden at this stage.IMO. Keep up the good work.
@Fun_Growin,
Thanks brother, I've got some new seeds on the way and a friend I can pull some clones from in the meantime. So I should be able to start a new crop this weekend. Fingers crossed.
@8TrackBaby,
Yuck!!! Been there in DWC myself.. WELCOME TO SOIL!! It's slower but who wants to fuck with all that RO water anyways right ?!?
Best of luck on next round I'll be watching
@Fun_Growin,
Sorry for the late response. I did flip them into flower before I had to leave on a near one month work trip. Please see my next journal entry from the details.
