The beginnings of the next grow are coming together. First a little background on the strain. The seed is bagseed from a local dispensary under the label Twenty Twenty(pretty certain not related to the Twenty20 out of Cali) that my wife absolutely loved. Out of about a half oz I found about 4 seeds, figured it pushed a banana. Researching the strain, it's a Tangie × 9lb Hammer hybrid. It most likely originates from Jinxproof Genetics, which would make sense since they're credited with the creation of 9lb Hammer. I grew one of them in a mixed strain grow earlier this year that turned out great. Decided to pop another bean and clone up some cuts for the wife.
*note the environmental numbers are current for today, my veg area is in my boiler room and the heat has been running a lot more lately- also cold temps are really driving RH low*
I started it at the beginning of October and by Halloween had a cute little plant to take some cuttings from. I need 4 so took 6 for some insurance. Wasn't much left when I was done. I wanted to keep it around though incase my cuts didn't take. About 2 weeks later I had some roots and didn't waste any time getting them into net cups to get them started. Since they're cuttings you don't have to baby them as much, I jump right in my standard veg mix- half the manufacturer recommendations- which in my water runs around 1100 ppm. About 5 days later we have visible roots outside the cups. Growth really begins at this point. About 10 days later(12/1) roots are really exploring and growth looks good enough to consider topping. Did my first real top off today(12/7). I added about 2 gallons. This res runs about 8 gallon if you want to leave much of a dry zone.
That's a general summary to get things caught up. I should be moving these into the flowering tent sometime shortly into the new year.
Probably got another 3-4 weeks left on my current run plus dry time.
1 of the 4 (#2)is a little smaller than the others. Roots look fine so it was probably just a little less developed when I transferred over to the tank. The rest nearly doubled in size. I pruned out the two bottom nodes from each plant, leaving 6 main branches each. I might take them down to 4 though, the bottom branches are running pretty horizontal and might not reach canopy level. If I do I'll probably go ahead and top each branch one more time. I got plenty of time on these, probably another 3-4 weeks before I can move these to the flowering tent.
I only needed to top off with about a gallon of full strength nutes(twice the listed ratio) to push EC/ppms back up a little bit.
So I did go ahead and remove the bottom branches and top the remaining 4 on each plant. Brings the top total to 8 per plant. They're continuing to grow fast, even with the toppings they're already taller than last week. Flower tent is super close so these ladies should be making their move pretty soon. I was kinda lazy this week and just used extra prepared flower ferts to top off with. It wasn't much and honestly shouldn't matter too much. Most of the nitrogen in General Hydroponics is in the micro, which doesn't change any between the veg and flower ratios. They'll be getting a fresh tank soon when they move over.
Theses plants are getting big. They need to go into the tent SOON. My other run is drying so it won't be much longer. I'll be able to spread them out some once I get them under the net but things are gonna get a bit crowded. We'll see how it shakes out. Haven't topped off the tank any this week. These will be going into separate buckets this week with a fresh tank so letting them drink down. Took some cuttings from the original mom so I can kill off the old one and plant the replacement in either soil or coco so I can slow roll it a bit more. This strain is gonna be shelved for a little bit because I got a lot of other seeds I got lined up for future runs.
Got the girls moved over and onto a 12/12 schedule on the 1st. Also moved to the transition ratios for the nutrients. Moving over to the buckets was a bit tricky with plants this established but I managed to get the roots through the hole without too much trouble. It's gonna help a lot with spacing these plants for sure since I got 2 biggies and 2 smaller ones. Using the net to help with spacing but really more of a trellis style grow than a true SCROG. This strain was a little more lanky last time so it's gonna be a little more vertical than my last couple runs. I set the light to 24 inches above the net to stretch into as they transition. It's currently running at about 390w, 9 out of 11 bars running. I don't really like to get much closer than 10-12 inches in flower but I got at least another 12 inches I can raise the light too if need be. We'll see how much they stretch.
10 days into 12/12 and minimal signs of flowering so far, just a few preflower pistils here and there. If memory serves, this strain was a little slow to flower last time but I had attributed it more to starting 12/12 while it was still pretty young. It'll show more soon. Otherwise all is well and growing well. My clones are all rooted so I picked one to pot. Will give it a weekish to evaluate before I finally kill off the one in the bucket. That one is lookin a little rough but I've been mostly ignoring it and topping it off with leftovers of other feedings lol.
Even 18 days after 12/12(as of these photos) there is still minimal flowering signs. It got me looking over the last time I grew this in my mixed strain "House Cleaning" diary. In those photos you really don't see much of any flowers until week 4 of flower(which is 6 weeks since starting 12/12 lol) on this strain. It took even longer than I remembered. Maybe that's why the breeder calls it Problem Child. Anyways, patience I guess. Plants doin good otherwise and growing strong. I'll need to raise the light a bit soon. Been needing to top off about every 3 days. Will probably move to the flowering ratios next week.
About 24 days into 12/12 and I FINALLY started seeing real progress into the transition to flower. Not only is this strain slow to transition but early flowering signs start off kinda weird lookin compared to other strains I've grown over the years. If this plant continues the same trends as the last time I grew it then it will chunk up pretty quickly once things get rolling. Even with minimal flowering the aroma is already starting up.
Did full tank changes and switched over to true flowering ratios. If you haven't noticed, I'm not as anal about tank changes compared to a lot of hydro growers. I usually do a change about once a month or when changing ratios unless there are issues. I top off a couple times a week though so plenty of fresh nutes in the system. I also don't push my concentration levels very high, only 1100ppm(about 2.2 EC) using pretty hard water.
Gave a light defoliation. Before and after pics included. Nothing crazy, just the old long stem stuff in the bottom half of the plants that aren't reaching the top of the canopy and is just clogging up space between branches. Leave the stuff up top intact for now though, those are the leaves that are doing the heavy lifting being closer to the light source. We just want a little better airflow in the under canopy.
The plants had stretched to about 10 inches away from my light so I raised it 6 inches to give it closer to 14 inches of clearance again. I have about another 6 inches I can raise it if needed. Hopefully it's enough headroom. The canopy is very full, I'll have to get very creative if I gotta supercrop.
The flowers are finally showing out. I've never had a strain that was so slow to transition but this is the second time now with this strain. Maybe I'll try growing it in warmer conditions next time. It could help. I actually picked up a 600w HPS so I can do warmer grows in my chilly basement lol.
They're still growing some but I think the stretch is slowing down mostly. I got maybe 3 branches that are pushing a bit tall but the rest is pretty evened out at 12 inches from the light. My tall ones are more like 7 inches lol. They seem ok for now but once bulking starts I would expect some bleaching. I'm gonna give them a few more days then supercrop down to canopy level.
Plants are feeding pretty steady, topping off at normal levels. About due for a second defol. Just waiting to make sure we're done with the stretch.
So early in the week I supercropped a few branches down to canopy level, today I hit a couple others. Most of the canopy is sitting at about 10 inches from my light. A few tops a pushing taller still but those aren't directly under the light and I think should be ok. These plants are almost 3 feet tall from the lids.
Did a pretty decent defoliation today, before and afters included. Wanted to really open up airflow before flowers started thickening up. Deep inside the lower canopy I could detect a faint aroma of mildew, so it's probably good I didn't wait any longer.
Still feeding strong. Topping with regular strength nutrients. I'll probably do a tank change next week sometime.
The plants have slowed down on their nutrient uptake, EC has been rising throughout the week so I just topped off with water. Decided to do tank changes today for some fresh solution. Flowers look like they're beginning to move into the bulking phase.
