#2 - I thought this was a photoperiodic seed and topped it. Then I realized it's an automatic! (Skunk #1 Automatic)

Time for second grow. This time I want to try growing a photoperiodic plant, after the two automatics of the last run. It's an old Skunk #1 seed, bought in April of 2024 in Amsterdam. I've tried growing this strain before without a grow tent, just on my window sill - and failed miserably. This time the plan is to get used to the light cycles, get used to repotting and to try out topping! I've soaked the seed in a glass of water for 2 days until it finally opened up. The open seed was put in growing soil. The photos were took 4 days later.

Everything is developing fine. The humidity is way too low in the tent because of the dry winter air. I'm trying to mitigate it by spraying water but if this is going to be a problem, I guess only an air humidifier would help. But after adding the dehumidifier for the summer months i wasn't planning to add more devices - at least for now.

After 4 leaves established i repotted the plant into its final pot, a 15l felt pot. The plant is developing okayish, neither super great, nor bad. It's probably a bit stunted by the low temperatures but i think it should be fine in the 20°C range. When the plant grows a bit more, I can increase the light and therefore the temperature. This week I'm also starting to add Bio-Grow to the mix.

The plant is growing well. I'm using way less light compared to the last grow but it seems like that was the right call, it's only at 300 µmol/m²/2 compared to the 400-500 I've used before. I'm planning to top the plant this time but I think I have to wait another week for that.

This was the big week for this grow, I had my first attempt at topping! After roughly 26 days of veg, I removed the 6th node to encourage a bushier growth. This post was made 3 days later. The plant recovered well I think but I can't say much about the effect yet. The two new branches are growing slowly. Since the plant was quite compact to begin with I cannot say much about how much it decreases the vertical growth. But the goal was to even out the canope for a better light distribuation.

This week I did some mayor low stress training to keep the branches separated and well ventilated. That also required some defoliation. Since i just topped the plant last week, I tried to keep the defoliation to a minimum, to reduce stress. That resulted in a rather funky looking plant. Next week I'll decide whether I will continue topping the plant again, or start main-lining for the flowering phase. I'm still pretty much undecided, how to continue. Edit: In hindsight I see on the photos that the plant got too much stress and started flowering, so I'm changing from this point on everything to "flowering".

The last week of veg. Today I switched the lights to 12/12. So in the end I only topped the plant once - but the new main branches are still worryingly small, so I guess I won't risk it. I also removed the LST wires and added the netting again today since it worked great the last time. Edit: Changed to flowering. See comment from last week.

I've started the flowering phase this week. It seems like the plant is a little stunted in growth or the genetic is just on the smaller side. I've also got some problems with brown spots on some leaves. I was hoping that I would have dealt with that using CalMag but that isn't the case. So I've finally got some PH testing kits and measured my tap water. Seems like it's too basic. Tomorrow my BioBizz PH- will be delivered so I can try lowering it from now on. Let's hope I can finally fix that problem.

Something is wrong here, a whole week and the plant isn't even growing an inch. The plant looks healthy, there's plenty of room in the pot. Is this genetic supposed to get only like 30cm tall in a grow tent? Other than that the grow is coming along okay. The buds are developing and even though there aren't too many, the ones that are developing are looking and smelling nice. I'M not going to lie, I'm not happy at all with this grow so far.

Well, I treat it like a automatic now - slowly raising the light schedule to 20/4. I'm still seeing some problems with the leaves, which may be the result of insufficient fertilizer. Since I thought I was in an earlier week, the dosage wasn't as high as it should have been. But that's adjusted now, so I hope it won't get worse at least.

It's getting closer to the harvest. The plant reached "autumn". Now that I know what I'm actually growing, everything looks like it was described on the Sensi Seeds page. But I'm still surprised how small the plant is - but that's how its supposed i guess - minus my topping accident. The buds are getting frosty and the smell is strong. So I guess there's not too much to worry about. I should also get an air humidifier I guess. But not this run.

The autumn is strong with this one. I've removed some of the dried up leaves and checked the trichomes. Still not cloudy enough but it's time to switch into the final week - so only water from now on. And starting on Wednesday I'll keep the plant in perpetual darkness until the harvest next weekend.

This strain is TINY! A little bit too tiny for my taste. In the end it was only about 30cm tall. It still yields nice buds but for maintanace i would prefer a little less dense plant.

After a week with without fertelizer and 3 days without light, I've finally harvested my Skunk #1 adventure. The wet bud weight is slightly lower than my previous attempts but considering that I've topped this plant by accident it's still a great yield!

Big update! I'm stupid! I thought this was a photoperiodic seed, but it wasn't - it was an automatic 😫 So basically I ruined the run with my topping attempt or at least reduced the possible yield by a lot. But I will keep this grow and this diary going, for transparency and as an example what happens if you top an automatic. I hope this can help at least one person out there to be smarter than me and avoid this mistake 😅 I'm not going to lie, this is an embarrassing mistake. I'll try to change this diary to reflect this development - but I'm not sure yet if you can change the strain after starting a diary, sorry.
