Marbanya 2025-01-01 - Germination directly in PRO-MIX HP CC in starter trays on a seedling heat mat under a humidity dome. 2025-01-04 - Transplanted into 1 liter plastic pots and placed in starter box. I kept them under the humidity dome for the first couple of weeks. 2025-01-17 - Moved to finishing tent with ViparSpectre P2000 2025-01-31 - Topped and moved to Veg tent. I selected these seeds during the holiday sale at Seedbank.com. I was ordering some NL#5 (a different diary), and I saw the Purple Punch on sale. Having wanted to add some anthocyanins (purples) to some of my other strains, and finding the description of this particular cultivar appealing, I ordered 5 beans. They sprang to life like they were glad to be home. In the last week of the seedling phase, they exploded in growth, with wide leaflets INDICAtive of indica (not a typo, maybe bad dad joke). These are some of the shortest, stockiest plants I've had in the grow tent yet. They handle light well and in close proximity to the canopy, they are stacked thick with branches.

Marbanya 2025-01-31 to 2025-02-06 This first week of veg and these plants have exploded in growth. I've decreased the potash by reducing the FloraGro from 15ml/gallon to 10ml/gallon. I will be putting these plants into flower in four weeks. I know nothing about this particular cultivar, but the description fit my fancy, and I've been looking to add some anthocyanins to some other indica cultivars.

Marbanya 2025-02-07 to 2025-02-13 With four of these cultivars, I will start flowering in week 5 with two of them, and hold the other two for an outdoor grow by transplanting up for another couple of months. This should create two large clone mothers in prep for the spring planting.

Marbanya 2025-02-21 to 2025-02-27 Growth is slow and steady. This variety of NL#5 from Seedbank.com takes well to LST and defoliation. I call out the seedbank and not the genetics producer as Seedbank.com will not share that info with their customers. If I had not been pleased with most of my previous results from Seedbank.com, I would not have reordered from them because of this seed source "redaction". The only reason I bring this up is, I question whether this varietal of NL#5 would be close enough to another cultivator's variety to call them both 'Northern Lights' or NL#5? I am hopeful that this batch turns out as good or better than the original NL#5 seeds I bought from Seedbank.com. My next seeds of this cultivar will be from another source, just so I can see if they compare. I'm curious to know if any of you other growers have tested this out? Seeds from multiple sources, claiming to be the same thing - but are they really? Let me know if the comments if you have.

Marbanya 2025-02-28 to 2025-03-06 These plants have extremely wide leaflets, indicative of indica. I have taken two of the four plants (#1 and #2) and repotted them into 3 gallon fabric pots from 1 gallon. After the roots have time to grow out and, perhaps one more topping and some LST, and the two in 3 gallon pots will be flipped to flower. I will save the other two in 1 gallon pots as mothers, if I decide to keep this cultivar in my perpetual grow.

Marbanya 2025-03-07 to 2025-03-13 At the beginning of the week, I took two of the plants, transplanted to 3 gal cloth pots, and moved them to the Flowering tent. The other two, I will leave in 1 gal pots, slow the growth rate, and take cuttings for future harvests. Depending on the quality, I may or may not keep this cultivar in my persistent harvest line-up of mainstays. The remainder of this journal will follow the flowering plants.

Marbanya 2025-03-21 to 2025-03-27 This week has seen significant stretch, more like a sativa-dominant cultivar, though this is supposed to be Indica-dominant. I have decreased Nitrogen and increased potassium and phosphate. I did not add silica or Cal-Mag this week, keeping the ppm lower.

Marbanya 2025-03-28 to 2025-04-03 I add nutrients to every other watering. The days that I water only, I will add silica blast every other watering. I've noted silica can raise the PPM significantly, so I am trying to remove that factor from the nutrient mixture as my water has a base PPM of around 215. The flowers are popping out nicely, and at the end of this week, I am noticing they give a slightly sweet smell.

Marbanya 2025-04-04 to 2025-04-10 We had around 8 inches of rain this past week, bringing the humidity up to uncontrollable levels, or at least beyond the capabilities of my dehumidifiers. Growing in a basement tends to be damp to start with, but when we have this much rain, the VPD becomes impossible to keep in the "ideal growth zone". To compensate, I have increased the airflow around the soil level and throughout the canopy, as well as increased the ventilation fans on the tent for max air turnover.

Marbanya 2025-04-11 to 2025-04-17 I noticed some burning at the leaf tips and took a reading of just over 2000 ppm from the nutrient run-off. I flushed both plants and brought that number down to around 600. I have reduced the nitrogen and will continue a more diluted nutrient formula, as my water ppm has been over 200.

Marbanya 2025-04-18 to 2025-04-24 Nearing harvest, and I'm noticing the flower structure on the two plants look totally different. 1 - Both seeds came from the same 5-pack (photo-fem). 2 - Both were germinated together and raised side-by-side 3 - Both were on an identical nutrient schedule 4 - Both were grown in identical 65/35 peat-to-coco ratio medium 5 - Both smell similar, but not identical. Sort of fruity, but Purple Punch #4 is stronger with a slightly more sour smell. The flower structure is larger and more dense on Purple Punch #3. I added the dehumidifier back to the tent to get the VPD readings in the optimal range.

Marbanya 2025-04-25 to 2025-05-01 Flush week - I am only watering for this final 10 days. The closer to the targeted harvest date, the more I am contemplating leaving Purple Punch #3 to mature longer (63 to 70 days). Even though both #3 and #4 were 1 - germinated together 2 - fed and watered the same nutrient schedule 3 - and raised side-by-side under the same lighting and environmental conditions they have vastly different pheno expressions. PP#3 has larger, denser flowers while PP#4 has a stronger "grape punch" smell, though slightly more sour.

Yeah, that’s just how phenos work, especially with F1s like most of these packs. Even though both plants came from the same 5-pack and grew in the same exact setup, you're still gonna see differences pop up. Most F1 strains can throw out anywhere from like 30 to even 100+ different phenos depending on the genetics, and a lot of breeders don’t fully stabilize or test their lines before dropping 'em. There’s usually still some mutations or recessive genes floating around that haven’t been bred out yet, so you get all kinds of expressions even ones that seem pretty far apart. So yeah, what you're seeing is most likely just different phenos from the same strain, not a packing mix-up. It's super common.

Looking at the two flower pictures from Week 12, and reading my comments from that same week, would you think these are two different cultivars, or are these just two vastly different expressions? I'm not used to seeing this much variance in Photo-Fem seeds.

Well, I would like to say I have a mountain of experience. But, even though growing all these years, I am just now finding all this information I never had before. In the beginning, there was "The Marijuana Growers Handbook" by Ed Rosenthal. Much of that book has proven to be incorrect, but that's really all we had other than our trial and error, and sharing info with the few other growers you might know AND TRUST! Bro Science to Grow Science is an interesting journey. Stick around and we'll learn together. Thanks for the comment.

The foliage was so big, and my veg tent way too full for me to notice the lack of circulation around the base of one of the five Purple Punch plants. Before I could get corrective action, the stem became too weak from rot and broke off. This prompted me to immediately take clone cuttings of some of the veg tent cultivars and get rid of what I just can't live without.
