Chem91 tap root at almost an inch in less than 48 hours. HighLux cracking its shell tap root visible. Went and planted them in 3 gallon fabric pots with 100 percent Canna coco coir. Watered in gently with a hand sprayer. I think we will name the Chem91 Cammie and the HighLux we will call Taylor, after Taylor Swift, get HighLuxary! I’m going to keep my lights on the high side, around 40 inches. At that height I have PPFD 260’ish and DLI 25-27’ish at 25 percent power. With the NextLight Mega Pro in a 40 x 40 tent it is powerfull. At a quarter power zero heat at all, in fact need to add heat at this point. Anyone out there following this journal with more experience than I PLEASE don’t let me drown the girls before I can teach them how to swim. lol

Very stoked to be able to grow some Chemdog from the source himself the legendary Chemdog. Thanks Daz for bringing us this in an autoflower form. As I can’t wait to smoke something with a blast from the past. I’ll be reminiscing smoking it with my friends way back when in 1991. ***Feb. 7. 25. Day2. Cammie is happy today. Yeah, makes me happy too. I know she has a tap root that is a fast grower because in paper towels less 48 hours , about forty is closer she cracked the shell with a root already an inch long. She is in a deepish 3 gallon fabric pot, 100 percent Cana coco, does anyone have an idea about how much and how often I I should water her to keep up with the tap root. I will be sub irrigating them once the roots are deep enough. ***Feb.8.25 EXCITING. HighLux has sprouted over night. Short stout and nice color. Hooray! Day 3 for Cammie and she doing fine. Going to let her dry out a little bit more because her next one is going to have to be deeper into the coco to keep up with the roots. Any input on this is greatly appreciated. ***February 9 day 4 Cammie,Chem91, she is happy so far no issues at this time. Day 2 HighLux. WOW. At two days younger than her cousin she is now a full quarter inch taller than Cammie,Chem91. Watering plan is to wait until coco is just dry to the touch, then water with 16 ozs. Then 24 ozs. Then I hope the whole pot. Then game on. Update. All is well. *** Feb 10 day 5 forCammie and day 3 for Taylor. Both are healthy this morning with Taylor really shining. Moisture of coco seems adequate so have decided to go for a slightly dry out before the next watering. *** February 11. Today’s update. Girls were happy but not praying to the light as I like to say. So what was different about the environment that would cause this. Temperature was the same. Humidity was the same. Water? Check the coco. Is this what coco that is ready for water feels like? Is this the consistency? Couple it be, possibly be, that I may have figured out how to water coco coir. Let’s see. I’ll water them. Oh my, they started praying to the light god!!!lol Mixed up a new batch of A&B with some root wizard, ph’d it twice, insuring that it was 6.0. Watered each plant with twelve ozs. Each. ***Happy Valentine’s Day*** Stoked!!! Just picked up another pack of Night Owl Seeds. This time around Daz unpacked some true gems from past drops as well as some new creations, which made really hard to decide on which one to choose. So after some deliberation I finally found myself ordering a pack of Harvey Walbanger(orange desesl x cookie smasher) Oh yeah baby. I now have six strains of Night Owl’s!!! *** Been busy past couple of days and didn’t have time to update the diary. Promise to bring things back up to date this weekend. So until then, happy gardening ***February 15 days 10 and 8 respectively. Girls are doing fine I wish they were a little bigger at this point but we will see what happens this next week. Watered the entire pot till I had good runoff, then set the pots on towels to soak out all excess water. I now have perfectly moistened coco. Did I mention the Harvey Wallbanger seeds I scored last night from Night owls Valentine’s Day drop. Hoorah!!!to extract any excess moisture. Seems to be working perfectly Adjusted the light to 36 inches at 25% power where I am getting PPFD between 260/270 and DLI 26 ***February 18 days 13 & 11 respectively G. Girls are looking great today with Taylor still taking the spotlight. I have a feeling The Chem91 is going to take off during stretch. I’m really liking the watering method I had devised. I water until runoff and then set the pots on towels. Will be starting a new week tomorrow so hopefully it will shine up as being current

100% Canna coco coir substrate. 3gal. fabric pot. Will be sub irrigating via. wicking. Watering? How can I be sure that I have watered deep enough without overwatering. I have always grown in some sort of soil, so this coco is causing me some issues. Any advice would help.

coco is not anything different. It simply absorbs water and holds it until the plant drinks it up... or evaporates if not drinking fast enough. Despite common belief, pure coco does not have good enough drainage and aeration properties. You want 33% perlite or similar mixed in for an optimal gas:water mixture for the roots. This won't derail your grow, but in future add some vermiculite or similar. Tiny plant in a huge pot is an incredibly bad idea - yes, even with autoflowers. Potting up should never cause 'shock,' and if you cause shock from potting up, it is self-inflicted and easily avoided with a bit more patience and not employing some sort of retard strength destroying the rootball. Don't transplant when it is too dry to hold itself together, either. Use appropriate sized pots for plant size. This may require you to hand-water until it gets into a pot that has a wick, but it'll avoid a plethora of risks and it is worth it. I hand water until my final pots and then the irrigation system kicks in. Small pots are easy to water and not time-consuming, so it's not much of a cost and a huge benefit to proper root growth and avoiding bad watering habits. I also strongly suggest reconsidering a wick or any sort of bottom-up watering setup. It basically takes the primary benefit of growing in a soilless medium and throws it out the window. You will risk buidlup in the substrate or require needless efforts like flushing to maintain a healthy medium. These efforts will only slow growth down by comparison, and again for no good reason. Something 100% avoidable if you water top-down and religiously get 10% runoff ("drain to waste"). This makes diagnosing and adjusting more simple and accurate by completely eliminating the possibility of buildup in the substrate. Yes, you can still overfeed and cause a toxicity in the plant, but it will never be because it built up in the substrate.. a simple formula change avoids it completely. So, every once in a while i'd give a top fertigation and get some good runoff. You may even want a slightly diluted formula when you do this or possibly water-only. This is something that will require some trial and error on your part to find that balance. When does the plant start to show it is getting too much? Pre-empt that with a top down dilution. Maybe every 2 weeks.. really depends on how heavily you feed and other local variables, so it's something you must figure out on your own. as far as wicking.. the natural capillary action and draw of water up due to evaporation or drinking should be okay on its own. Shouldn't have to worry about removing the water or anything like that. The plant drinks some, creates a "pull" and more water absorbs up the wick and into the substrate. It's a constantly occurring thing. You 'can' make a wick system work, but if going soilless there are much better options that don't require so much extra effort to avoid problems that aren't possible when doing things in a more orthodox way. remember, coco is not magic. If you are experiencing any problems it is behaviour related and not the solid substrate that water absorbs into. that's tantamount to a bucket, lol. A bucket doesn't do much beside hold the water. Don't blame the bucket. if you go with sphagnum peat moss, need 50% perlite or similar - i'd recommend vermiculite #3. It adds available silica in addition to a proper gas:water mixture for roots. The only thing special about coco is that if the manufacturer doesn't buffer it properly, it can make your plants sickly or even kill them, lol. Coco is convenient, but it's not magic or "better". in fact research by bugbee shows that sphagnum peat moss is a better soilless base. I guess that kinda makes coco coir "special." lol,, short-bus special.

February 19 Day 14 for Cammie (Chem91). She is doing well and I’m getting better at understanding the basics of coco coir. She is a stout girl at this point but development is spot on. Giving her fortified water using Cana A&B for coco, Root Wizard, calmag. Ph’ing to a perfect 6.0. Also I am oxygenating the water via a fish tank pump prior to applying to the substrate. In a few more days I would like to raise the PPFD to around the 300 mark for the next couple of weeks, gradually increasing it to 400 at peak flower. As For Taylor, she is just gorgeous. Tall well figured. She is currently out pacing Cammie so it will be interesting to watch how the two of them interact with each other. As far as feeding and such , she has gotten exactly the same as Cammie. Will update with more pics and details throughout the week. ***February 21 days 16 and14 days respectively. Chem91 is a little gem. I need to stay the course with her and not overthink things here because I’m prone to knowing what right even if it’s wrong. lol. HighLux is exceeding my expectations for sure. I think with this plant she may take me on the ride of my life. Going to let both girls grow true to their natural beauty, no LST or topping for these two ladies.
