Not impressed with the Fox Farm Happy Frog soil I used. Plants aren't nearly as strong as last year. I'm thinking of adding a little Biochar next week to see if they perk up a bit. They may also be a little tired from the repotting.
I'm debating what to do about nutes this year. I bought a gallon of the Big Bloom and am currently using that. However I don't think I'm going to use the other Fox farm products I used last year. I'm thinking of going a more natural route. I've been taking a permaculture course and learning about soil health, so I'd rather not use mineral salts so I have healthier soil.
Soil salinization can cause serious issues unless you're periodically flushing the root systems to wash out the salt build up. So why are we even using this stuff in the first place? Excess salinization can compromise the soils ability to hold moisture, prevent plants from uptaking nutrients (lockout) and even change the soil PH. Just because something is labeled for organic use doesn't mean it's perfect. This is something I've been learning lately. For instance: Someone can be certified organic while they still till the soil, releasing carbon and nitrogen into the atmosphere as well as destroying the beneficial microbial activity in the soil itself.
Instead, we could use:
Blood Meal/Feather Meal for Nitrogen- Maybe a mix of both. Blood meal releases quickly while feather meal takes longer so you have a balance.
Bone Char for Phosphorus.
Kelp Meal for Potassium and micronutrients.
Blackstrap Molasses for general health especially flowering. Molasses contains vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Manganese, Copper, Iron, Potassium and Selenium.
Biochar will give a great source of Carbon for water retention, and provide beneficial bacteria + Fungi.
Just some things to think about.
@Fibro_Witch,sme here we have summer since friday... before i had to fire the oven to have it warm in the evening . from one day to the other it cahnged
@Mrs_Larimar, Thank you! Feeling much better. However the weather is not cooperating! It's still getting down into the 40's at night (around 6-8C) it's not forecasted for temps to remain above 60 (15C) until next month! I'm hoping if I put them under a row cover in a couple weeks that it will protect them enough. We're having a very late spring... And it's almost summer😟
@Mrs_Larimar, Thanks! To me She smells sweet and earthy with a hint of spice. Though then again I have chronic sinusitis and a deviated septum so I could be wrong!😂👃
they look very wonderful, maybe a little to lightgreen=? i cant say it its just photos... i wont stop giving them small amounts of nitrogen, they are still growing and stretching
@Mrs_Larimar, Thanks! I'm giving them the 5-2-4 granular every other week so they're still getting Nitrogen, just takes a little longer for them to take it up since it's granular. I may give them a little blood meal and see what happens because they are stretching quite a bit, I know the Widow Remedy could use a little more N.
I agree to your concerns about the soil... it a great soil but not for seedlings, they like " poor " soil........ only slightly fertilised... and if you go with solocups than those very small containers they grow better... but the year started.... and they have around 6 more months to grow...
Question: How do you get your end product tested?
I would love have my finished product tested but I'm unsure if individuals are able to take them to the commercial testing labs around me (NorCal)
@@Sonoma_Sungrown, I've never had mine tested so I wouldn't know from experience. I would recommend searching for Private Cannabis Testing on Google. I would guess there should be at least one around you.
Caramelicious always runs slow for me too. I have four autos in their third week of flower right now and I did six photo's last year that went 24 weeks. Could have harvested at the end of 22, but the weather was still cooperating nicely.
