I got some Tangie at a dispensary in Denver and loved the high and the smell, and have wanted to grow it since then, so I started four seeds in spring with the intention of growing them outside. I'm doing this grow in coco hempy buckets and using General Hydroponics flora series nutrients per their drain-to-waster feeding schedule.
Not much else to report at this stage.
Well, this is embarrassing. Look at how small these plants are after 8 weeks of veg. There are a few reasons for this. First, I chose to veg these seedlings in a secure outside location at a friend’s house during a really cold and rainy New England spring.
Second, I didn’t start to add Cal-Mg supplement until after a month of veg, so there was a CalMag deficiency issue, because coco needs CalMag. Third, some bugs were feasting on these poor little seedlings. Fouth, this area only gets full sun after 10:30 am, so the plants were getting only about six hours of full sun per day.
Most importantly, I fucked up mainlining and topping the plants. Here’s a lesson learned: “Look before you cut.” Look at T#4, to the far right in the picture. It’s the biggest plant because I only topped it once. You may ask why T#4 doesn’t look like it’s been topped. Why does it only have one cola? Because there was only a growth bud on one side of the third node where I topped it; the plant was asymmetrical at that node. If I had looked and noticed that before I topped it I would have topped at the 4th node and have a much bigger plant right now. So why are the other three plants so much smaller? I think it’s because I topped them a second time for four colas. They were too scrawny when I topped them the second time because they were very slow to recover.
At any rate, they’re doing OK now and will hopefully yield some good quality smoke, although my errors in this outdoor grow will assure me of a low yield. Lessons learned.
I flipped the Tangie plants to a 12/12 flower cycle during Week 9 and after four days all four plants are female! The plants are doing well in the tent, they are happy and growing much faster than they were outside. Not sensitive to nutes; they are a nice healthy green. T#4 has developed an awesome fresh tangerine odor, she's way ahead of her sisters. Based on terpenes alone she's my favorite plant. And to think I almost culled here because of the FIM issue.
The others have a more faint citrusy odor with a little funk. I took clones of all the plants.
The Tangie plants are coming along and starting to develop very small flowers after two weeks of 12/12. T-4 still has a wonderful pungent tangerine aroma. Not much in the way of trichomes visible yet. So far these plants have not been fussy, and other than being a little stretchy, have been easy to grow.
These Tangie plants are still stretching. I've had to bend a few colas over to stay out of the lights. Good thing I mainlined 3 of them. The tent is crowded and I'm going to have to stake up these plants soon as the buds become heavier.
Tangie #4 is the special girl of this batch. She is already sticky with resin and reeking of tangerine 21 days after 12/12. I took two clones of all four Tangie plants and they have all rooted.
Humidity is high in the tent and my basement grow area is warmer than I'd like, but there's not much else I can do. I think I prefer this to running an electric heater in winter.
Great smells developing in the tent! The Tangie plants are getting about 1.5 l of nute solution per day and all look good and healthy. I defoliated and removed a lot of the lower buds that would otherwise be larf. These plants are moving along nicely and T#4 remains the star of this grow. The main cola is getting a lot o flight because it's horizontal and it's growing like crazy. Nice dense buds forming and all pistils are still snow white. I potted rooted clones of all four plants and they are doing well under fluoros in my veg cabinet. This week I pollinated buds on T#3 and T#4 with pollen collected from one of six Strawberry Cough males I selected based on aroma, so I'll have some interesting seeds to run in the future if I want a really terpy, up strain: Strawberry Tangie sounds nice.
Buds are getting bigger and more fragrant. Still almost all white pistils, but a few red ones are showing up. Tangie #4 looks to be the earliest finisher...I'm gonna guess 8.5 weeks, with the others done around 10-11 weeks. Tips are showing a little burn so I'm dialing back the nutes this week.
I dialed the nutes back to about 700 ppm and the girls seem to be happy. We now have a horse race for best pheno, as Tangie #4 is being challenged by the up-and-coming Tangie #1. T#4 still has the strongest and most tangerine-peel odor, but T#1 is just laying on the resin. I'm thinking 3-4 weeks left for most of these plants, except maybe #3 will go 11-12 weeks.
These Tangie plants are really fun to grow and they're all getting really resinous, and the smells of the other plants are turning more citrus/tangerine. T#1 is now the undisputed resin monster, and she has a chem/astringent funk that overpowers the citrus smell, but she won't be a large yieldeer. T#2, which has been the least interesting plant so far, has developed a great citrus smell and the buds have packed on a lot of trichomes. T#3 is finally starting to show some color and looks to be getting ready to bulk up. T#4 is still my favorite girl with the freshest, loudest tangerine smell and lots of oily resin. Hopefully they all make for good and flavorful smoke.
No issues with nutes and temps have been perfect, while humidity has crept up to 68% during some muggy weather. I'm probably going to start flushing these plants in the next week or so.
The yields were good on a couple of the plants but the high was weak and muddled. Nice aromas did not translate into taste. I was not impressed with this strain.
Tangie is performing well for you, OC, Looks like you are in line for a spectacular result. Congrats.
Very tempted to make this strain my next grow based on your commentary. I can almost smell those beautiful buds from here. ;-)
OCS, Bud.
1.5l of nutes per day is a lot of feed. You will kill you lovely Tangie if you keep with this frequency.
Have you checked the ppm of your run off? I am curious to know what this is.
In my garden, I would be feeding once a week at most, more likely once every 2 weeks, and watering (supplements <200ppm-300ppm) as needed between. F, W, W, F, W,W.
Interested to hear your thoughts.
cheers.
@OldCoolSativa,
As you have noted, watering to run off protects you from salt build up and by checking ppm you will know immediately if you have been over nuting,
I have over nuted for all of my grows so far so unfortunately consider myself an bit of an expert on the subject. ha ha.
Currently my Laura Bush is drinking about 1/2 gal per day for a 3x3 area, and she eats about 60 ppm per day. Over 5 days, she'll need about 300 ppm.
Anyway, your girls are looking great and wish I could taking a good whiff off their trademark Tangie aroma. Looking forward to your future posts and following your girls through harvest.
@Mr_Positivo, I think your comments would apply if I were growing in soil but I believe I'm OK with this feed schedule because I'm growing in coco hempy buckets, a passive hydroponic method. Everything I've read about growing in hempy buckets says to water/feed using a drain-to-waste feed schedule and give them enough to get at least 10% runoff. I haven't checked the pH or conductivity of the runoff but I will next time I drain the reservoir. The 850 ppm I'm currently running is measured, and includes the CaMg I'm using at 4ml/gal I'm using. I've also read that you should water/feed every 2-3 days when the plants are small and up that to daily when the plants get big and drink a lot. It's worked well so far, with only a little brown at the very tips of the leaves.
I may dial this back to 700-800 ppm.
@OldCoolSativa, sounds awsome! I don't know to much about it, but if you have Instagram and type crockettshaze as a tag, a few posts come up of buds in late flower! You can message the user that posted the photo and ask for more info etc, that is what I would do!
@BreakingBud, Thanks man. One of these plants already has an incredible smell that is exactly like fresh tangerines! I'm pumped for this smoke! I'd love to try Crockett's Haze but it's expensive and I haven't been able to find a single grow log online. You know anything about it?
Thanks for the reference, OCS, That is quite a thread and very interesting. Not sure what strain my next run should be but this article points to many possibilities.
@OldCoolSativa, that was quite an adventure also, thanks again. I forget how well some growers grow weed. dr pentathol, mack 10, hydroheinz. beautiful stuff and a great conversation about chasing the orange. I am hooked.
As an alternative to Catnip Seeds, I might look into what TGA have to offer. They were the beneficiaries of some good genetics from what I was reading, but i am a newbie so I may be off base.
@ElevatedThinking, Thanks, dude! I'm loving this grow, and am really impressed with this strain, with two out of four girls looking particularly nice. Psyched I got all girls and still have 8 seeds left in my pack of Crockett's Tangie!
This strain is legendary and Crockett farms are the guys who put Tangie on the map, if I am not mistaken.
Going to follow your grow with interest. Happy growing, OCS.
@Mr_Positivo, hey, man, thanks for your note. Tangie is indeed legendary. I'm not sure I buy into it's claimed pedigree of CaliO x Skunk. There's an interesting thread on IC Mag about Crockett's vs DNA's Tangie that's worth a read.
