Higheinzelmann On December 31st, all seeds (8 × Purple Kush & 4 × Kush Mint) stretched a small white root through the shell in just about 30 hours in the glass of water. Note: I placed a heating mat (incubator) under a Styrofoam box, and my glass of water sits at a stable 25°. This significantly speeds up germination and helps prevent typical seedling diseases from developing. Rockwool cubes and mats (the latter for later) were soaked in water with a low pH of around 4. They come from the factory with a pH of about 8. 5.8 is the target value. Note: For hydroponics, do not use organic citric acid. It’s not stable and decomposes. Even if some claim otherwise. So my acidification was pretty useless since the pH just went back up. I only really noticed this when the seedlings were already covered in the rockwool cubes with a Seramis/vermiculite mix and were sitting under two old Osram fluorescent tubes 36w/856 with a total of 72 watts.

Higheinzelmann Already moved into the cubes. To avoid damaging the delicate roots, the seedlings were embedded in a Seramis/vermiculite mix. You can let it fall in nicely. Since they were also placed too far from the fluorescent tubes, what had to happen happened: they stretched, became leggy, and formed a long unstable stem. It's not really a cause for concern, but it's something to act on. So I reduced the distance to the lamp and set up a small fan next to it that’s 20cm away, which brought some indirect movement without stressing them.

Higheinzelmann Due to all the little mistakes I made, the plants have fallen behind in their development. Since I didn't like that the tubes also require 72 watts and I couldn't stabilize the pH, I finished the tent and the Wilma. That actually took about 50 hours! Since I, being a fool, put the remaining cuttings half-heartedly into soil last summer instead of taking a proper break (I live in the attic without air conditioning), and had some on the windowsill as well, I ended up with problems like powdery mildew, thrips, and spider mites. Therefore, EVERYTHING had to be cleaned and disinfected, and some things were replaced. Note: I wanted to buy Purolyt, which is an intelligent cleaning agent based on active chlorine (HOCL) specifically marketed for the grow sector, but it's ridiculously expensive. After some thorough research (which also took part of the 50 hours), I found Strong Planet disinfectant. It has the same active ingredient, similar applications, is almost 10 times more concentrated, and costs a fraction of Purolyt. It breaks down into water and oxygen, so you can even treat plants, air, and nutrient solution. Everything was like new, and now it was time to move into the tent onto the Wilma. They needed more space for their roots, so they were placed two or three on the prepared Grodan Delta rock wool mats.

Higheinzelmann Now that they're in the main system (Wilma) and under the good light, they showed more activity right away. Since the stem still wasn't strong enough, and I simply love the effect of this product, I gave them Vitalize (by Mills). With that, they get almost unnaturally thick stems and leaves as if they were made of leather. They now look like little bodybuilders. Note: Only start with additives when things are going well with nutrition without them. Most of these products are supportive. You don't want to be supported when things are going poorly... A few words about the nutrient solution: I use osmosis water + about 10% tap water during the growth phase, then I add Calmag until I reach 0.4 EC; that's the base water. In flowering, I mix osmosis water only with tap water until I have 0.4 EC. The reason is that Calmag contains N (nitrogen), and we don't want that during flowering. Then comes the main fertilizer and whatever else you want to add. If you balance everything correctly, the pH usually stays fine without needing major adjustments. Normally! This time it wasn't quite the case for me. The rock wool, whose pH I couldn't reliably bring down, pulled my pH up over several days, initially up to 7.5. Nevertheless, they developed well; considering some other gardens, it's complaining at a high level. Since the EC was still only at 0.8, I raised it to 1.2 EC by the end of the week. That also resolved the pH drift. Now there seemed to be enough fertilizer in relation to the carbonates in the water, so it could noticeably unleash its pH-stabilizing abilities. This returning calm brought strong growth with it. Due to an unstable and sometimes too high relative humidity of 80%, there were slight but clear signs of calcium deficiency. I added 25ml of Calmag to 100l of nutrient solution.
