Danylo Say what you will about the indica vs sativa stuff but when selecting seeds I tend to go for the chunkier ones hoping for a more indica-leaning pheno! (Yes, very scientific! π)
I have read about larger seeds needing a little more time to germinate, which makes sense - because the larger the seed, the larger the distance from outside to center of the seed.
They were all on the chunky side, but I took the biggest of them and despite the size/germination-time relation this one (along with the Chemdog) smashed my previous "first water contact to poking through the soil" - record by almost ten hours. 64 hours is all it took, crazy.
I think it's at least partially due to the relatively warm 23.5-24Β°C (~75Β°F) temp they got during this time.
Method stayed the same : Soak for about 24 hours in 1% H202 solution and then directly into low nutrient soil.
Despite selecting the larger seed she appears to have somewhat narrow leafs which usually indicates a sativa-leaning phenotype. I recently had a lot of luck with a Lemon Z sporting a comparably sativa pheno (in reference to the more indica-leaning one I had a while before) so this is going to be exciting!
[Personal note:] I just love growing from seed! .. every resulting plant and it's growing experience is a little unique π

Danylo For a few days now we had the first 5-pronged leafs which means we're officially in VEG!
Quite a lot happened in the last six days .. she grew, she rooted through her little 0.5L pot - got transferred to a 3.5L and then she got her first haircut.
Gave her a day to acclimatize after getting repotted and then removed most of her fan leafs. Her fan leafs had long stems so there was some light reaching the lateral branches, but they weren't developing as fast as they should. Yes she looks a little ratty directly after..
(Marked the pictures for easier temporal placing this time : lower number = younger plant)
Danylo I transplanted the Slush Mint Cake the day after the Chemdog. She was a little smaller but appeared to have great roots! And despite me being a little too generous while watering, she had almost no visible deficiencies.
Her frame right now is almost candelabra-shaped!
Interestingly, she (for now) has just a moderate "yep that's a cannabis plant" smell. The other two are already slightly stinky. I'd love to know if there is any way to predict the finished intensity from these early impressions.. π€·
The slight overwatering fixed itself after 1-2 days. Not droopy anymore β€οΈ
Next week she'll get topped, rested for a few days and then sent into 1212-land!

Danylo This is my Slushy at the end of W4Veg!
The drooping from "overwatering" is mostly past us, but as it seems right now, she LIKES to droop everytime she's getting something to drink. She hasn't established her final root-system in the big pot so this may very well change later!
She got topped this week. Structure after topping is very much to my liking! β€οΈ
...topped her at the same time as the major defoliation for the whole tent and realized afterwards that I didn't take any "before-defol-top" pics. 8(
Leaf tips have some clawing down-and-up stuff going on.. shouldn't really happen at these EC levels so I will keep an eye on it!

Danylo Soooo. Week5Veg is finished for this very interesting Slush Mint Cake!
Let's start with the usual: Pre-flowerflip cleanup is done and I took off sooo much that I'm questioning my methods. π€· This usually means I did just enough. During this she gave off an aroma I can only describe as candied tobacco. Very FULL bouquet, very sweet. Already.
I don't really like _burned_ tobacco , but the fresh stuff is pleasant!
Now for observations that go contrary to my experience with other cannabis plants:
- She is THE droop queen. Droop from medium watering, droop when she'd tanked enough light that day. And I don't mean a little droopy. Major-League professional drooping! Only chance to see her praying was the first few hours into her daily light-time when she had been watered the day before.
- While doing the preflower-cleanup I finally realized why that was (probably) happening. Her leafs are BIG, have long stems which add lever, and to round it off they are heavy af and have thicker stems than some lateral branches I've seen on other plants.
- I had to cut off some actual branches during this and for the first time I'd seen a plant leak some serious fluid from the cuts. I guess she had to provide some actual pressure to keep those leafs up! I really gotta read up on the processes that make this happen .. I think its called turgor ?
Anyways... I love to see new stuff and learn more about this beautiful plant-species! Excited to see what she surprises us with in flower!
Danylo About ten days of 1212 now. Transition into flower is going well.
Stretch is hitting the afterburner though. π¬ She's a little lanky atm but thats just ample space for buds! π
After the heavy defol during the last few weeks she recovered nicely and makes good use of the light she gets from above again.
Did some defoliation (as usual) ..she produces these perfect dark green fanleafs! Always hurts to remove them.
Can't wait to rub off some trichomes in her near future to see what she aims for bouquet-wise! Always one of the highlights in a plant life-cycle for me.β€οΈ

Danylo This week it was time to do the last big cleanup in her run. During the last one I do some defoliation and (more importantly) remove the branches/budsites which won't be getting enough light or space to become good flower. I REALLY don't want some larf-to-be stealing resources from good buds.
On her, luckily, I didn't even have to remove that much!
She went from droop-queen to stretch-queen though.. damn. Anyway, she should be mostly through that now, and her spacing is still quite good. Sometimes this kind of stem-growth results in amazing looking bud structure in later flower so fingers crossed!π
Right now she is a little light-green in the upper third. I'm upping the EC a smidge to be safe, but she should acclimate soon anyways.
Trichome-wise she is the furthest of the three! Can't wait to rubby smelly in the coming 1-2 weeks. π
Danylo Another week done and happy that she has somewhat settled into her final form! She kept me on my toes until now so I don't know if she would be the right strain for me when I was just starting out!
As with the others: This week was MKP-week (right after stretch ends), where I add 200mg/L of MonoKaliumPhosphat (0-52-34) every watering to help provide changing nutrition-needs from vegmode-flowermode. It's somewhat of a PK 13/14 analogue.
She is the most resinous of the three by quite a bit still. Aroma is getting more complex by the week... aaand this week was a Gelato push? Had to make sure my nose isn't lying to me (via seedfinder) but yeah some gelato is creeping in.. which I really like β€οΈ
Stretch was a lot but stems are THICC and as it looks we are in for some really cool flower structure!
Some flowering parts are getting a little light-green in appearance. At the same leafs, however there are signs of colour change into something darker. A lot of times when a plant gets dark, they get a little lighter during transition... sooo we'll keep an eye on it!

Danylo I tried an old 10MP DigiCam this week and despite being 15 years old it took pictures that were sometimes better than my phone. Seriously considering buying an actual camera ATM. If there are camera-people in here: Would a (used) Sony Alpha 6000 be a bad choice ?
This Slush Mint Cake is doing very well! She is packing on mass, visible trichs and aroma! Right now she is smelling somewhat like creamy sugary candy with a fruit note that in our society would be described by colour rather than the fruit itself (like "Blue" or "Pink") .. What colour would she be? No clue! .. Delicious!
Jokes aside: ..right now she might be one of my all-time favourites bouquet-wise. β€οΈ Can't stop the rubby-smelly every time I come by the tent π
Leafs are visibly getting darker around the edges and now even on the surface. I like where this is going!
Unfortunately she suffers from a little bit of clawing ..possible that she needs a little less Nitrogen than the average plant.
Oh right! .. What did I do with/to the plant this week?: Nothing! Just watering. π

Danylo [Cams'n'Pix]
This week again there are pics from two different Cameras. MotoG84 and Nikon Coolpix 7100. I entered the source into the "Your message here" Field for each picture. (Don't have to do much to the Nikon pix, but with the MotoG84 colour temp is usually sooo far off... I think if it would just completely guess, it would at least SOMETIMES be correct π€·
[Plants]
I am VERY happy I got a new carbon filter for this run, because even this new, BIGGER one is fighting for its' life LOL.πΆ This Slush Mint Cake, which is right now in it's "rainbow-gummy-bear-icecream-phase" is stiiinking!! wtf... Growing weed is legal! here, but during longer work with the tent open I have to put a towel over the outside-facing door's (bottom) gap, because even for ME it's a little much π¦
The buds on her are probably the densest/heaviest ones I had until now. Luckily the stems are appropriate in strength because they would straight up break from these sand-filled-hackey-sack-ass-buds.
For some time now I reduced her nitrogen because of visible clawing, and that does seem to have worked a charm. Slightly reduced clawing on the affected regions and no new clawing anywhere else. Maybe she doesn't like nitrogen that much, or maybe she loves a competing cation sooo much she pulls in more NO3 than she should. π€·
Upper leafs are getting visibly darker all around - I'd love it if she ends up Dark Purple/Gray like on some of the pictures I've seen! β€οΈ
Danylo This is the last update before harvesting this beauty! I probably should tomorrow... buuuuuut im postponing to the weekend which means I have a few days to make up a reason why. (Lazyness πΆ)
She has been a very good girl! No capriciousness, no bananas at the end no nothing! Amazing aroma and probably the most resin of all plants I've grown until today. (I literally had overexposure problems on pictures taken with flash because of all the trichome glitter!)
I took a little test-bud and the effects seem very very enjoyable too! π
So this is the end of my run with this all-around-amazing Slush Mint Cake. I'm actually kind of sad because I think it will be REALLY hard to beat this strain in most measurable dimensions. Super delicious aroma, super easy to grow, a buttload of trichomes and (from a few test-buds) a great high! No primadonna stuff like being fussy about nutrients or hermaphroditism or weak stems or low yield or or or ... no NOTHING. She doesn't just smell delicous, she smells ALOT. My pheno appears to have a super high terpene% .. which is wild because right now at the end of flower she doesn't even really smell weed-like much. During the last days, when the tent was open, it smelled like someone was making a caramel heavy "Vienna Melange" in the next room. Vaped the gummybear type aroma is still apparrent too! VERY little "skunky" or "cheesy" aroma in this phenotype. Will update this one with some dried bud pix when drying is finished.

Danylo Boys I got lucky with this one!
VAPED:
Taste is not that easy to describe: .. think: "Verrrrrry sliiightly roasted caramel-cream+fruit Gummy-Bears" with a strong Gelato direction. Even though there are a lot of OGs in the family tree, THAT aroma isn't really prominent. Wouldn't have been a great fit anyways I think.
EFFECTS:
Don't know how much of my experience is transferrable to other people, but for me primarily there is a CLEAR relaxation component. Super good mood.. but no racing thoughts/ideas. I don't wanna get up and do LOOOTS of stuff... , but the thought of making dinner feels like a very interesting thing to do, you know?
All in all taste and effects are awesome AND I got lucky with a great pheno/harvest at the same time ? Happy Dan!π

A big thanks to everyone for your interest in this strain/diary. Love you guys! β€οΈ
Hello there, how did you manage that the bottom shoots are the same height as the the other ones? You describe its a "candelabra" shape. Really good result so far, following!
@H0BBYGAERTNER
To get the lateral branches to roughly the same level, I remove just about every fan-leaf growing from the main stem as soon as they hit 5-fingers. If the developing lateral branches get shaded by something else (like a leaf from other lateral branches) I remove that too. A few days before the switch to 1212 I also top my plants - this evens out the canopy even more. This method sometimes makes the plant look a little pitiful (especially when it is young) but I usually end up with very even branching.
She looks awesome! Thanks for sharing. From my experience SMC is a little diva when it comes to feeding. So try to reduce N as you said. Camerawise: you can never go wrong with Sony E-mount cameras. The 6xxx series is great if you are looking into dynamic range of raw files - what comes in handy with well lit growtents. Maybe you find a slightly more up to date version (e.g. 6400) on ebay for a good price.
@jen_zee, right now the plan is to just about halve her N for two weeks and then re-evaluateπ
Regarding the camera question: I know a guy with an Alpha 6000 and several lenses so I'm REALLY tempted to just ask to try those out for a few days and get a baseline for my expectations. In the mix right now are a Canon 5D Mark II, Sony Alpha 6000 and an Alpha 7 II even π
Thanks to you and everyone else for the recommendations ! β€οΈ
Looking good!
A Sony Alpha 6000 sure is not a bad idea, but personally would recommend a canon 5d mark ii.
Should be almost the same price and you can get a full frame sensor then.
But be aware: a camera is just as good as the lens you will use and good use of light is essential.
Hehe the droop queen! xD Yes she can indeed be a little finicky when it comes to watering and praying leaves.. it's a classic trait from her genetic lineage, same as the longer (and often coloured) leaf stems. You cleaned her up well, now she does need some time to recover though! But I expect very nice things in flowering ;-) Keep it up bro, nice clean grow so far
@Cauli, thx Cauli! Pictures still don't do her 100% justice. Gotta get better at capturing what my eyes see. That said, I got lucky because this plant was just so pretty even her bad pix look good =)
Happy to hear you like her that much mate! Definitely some bad ass looking buds! Well done and keep up the great work, next time with even better camera work you have everyone drooling at the screen lol :-)
@H0BBYGAERTNER, Main aroma is sweet and fruity, like opening a bag of gummy bears. Added to that there is some vanilla/doughy/milky/creamy? dimension. And then, in the background, there is actually something cool/fresh like eukalyptus/menthol. I had the fresh part once before in a Gelato41xCherryPie, but not this pronounced. Directly on the plant the aroma is one of my absolute favourites! Excited to see how all that develops while curing.
Photos look nice already. If you want to get an overkill - that really pays off - dig yourself into raw editing. Capture One does have entry level licenses for Sony cameras. Keep it going, keep it growing!
