Outdoor guerrilla grow, week one. I have 5 Critical Purple, 4 Gorilla Glue Auto and 1 Great White Shark (photo period, feminized) all from Grower's Choice. For this journal Iv'e selected 2 of the Critical Purple's. This is a new vendor and strain for me. My medium is a super light (and cheap) mix, made with 1/3 peat, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 organic compost This will be my first time growing an autoflowering strain (I do have experience with photos /clones)so any input would be *GREATLY* appreciated!! :)

Grow Questions

This is my very first autoflower grow so i'm not entirely sure what to expect.... My question is whether or not autos do a flowering stretch like photoperiods or does growth begin to slow at pre-flower?

They do everything a photoperiod does, but faster. How? Think of it like this: a photo strain that does 4 week of veg (18 hours light schedule) and 8 week of flower (12 hours if light schedule) will have a total of 4*7*18 + 8*7*12 = 504 + 672 = 1.176 hours of light to power it's whole growth and bloom. Now an auto strain doing 20/4 light schedule will get, during a 8 week grow cycle: 8*7*20 = 1.120 hours of light. Roughly the same amount of light to power its growth, but 4 weeks faster. Usually the seedling / veg stage of autos lasts 3 weeks, then you get 2 weeks of stretch and 3 to 4 weeks of bloom stage. Depending on how much light the are getting they can take a few more weeks.

My PH meter is broken so i'm at the mercy of PH paper for now and I think one gallon was way too hot at the end of last week. 2 of my critical purple became yellow bottom up (first pic) and super deep green so I ran a few gallons of water thru the 2 plants, i was just really paranoid...They seem to bounce back really fast, thanks for the comments/suggestions guys :). *The plant on the far left in the photo of 4 is GC Great White Shark feminized the rest Critical Purple.

The drooping is all me, i should have watered sooner because we've had some extremely hot days this week but this yellowing has me concerned...Does this look like PH, nutrient issue, or just how auto's react under watering? I'm flushing atm, any suggestions?

If you've just gave the plant a good watering then I wouldn't be too worried but lesson learned and you'll be ready next time around. Its very noticeable that your plants under went heat stress simply be seeing the curl on your leaves. If its announcing to be a hot day make sure to water in the morning and then simply make sure your soil is moist throughout the night and repeat as necessary.

Day 62 still just the smallest tells of preflower, no actual bud development with the critical purples yet, they're actually on track with my photo period plants :/ ...this is really puzzling ...My GG went in a week later than the CP and is starting to stack up nicely...

Not sure what's up with the 2 plants I decided to do this journal with. As my luck would go they are 2 of 3 critical purples that absolutely refuse to flower..Here is a side by side picture of what i mean. I have 5 of this strain and x3 are acting like any other photo I've grown. I took the liberty of super-cropping the 3 I mentioned, however my Gorilla Glue/GWS and x2 of the CP all seem on track and starting to stack up :) *DAY 64 - Deer or rabbits.... after my initial panic I discovered that they weren't hurt too badly

Day 72 and still no sign of flower on x3 of the Critical Purple...My photo period plants are ahead of these "autos"....ugh **I put the week back to "veg" because while all other plants are flowering/finishing the CP i selected for this journal aren't. I reached out to Grower's Choice about 3/5ths of this "auto" strain turning out to be photos and they gave me the ruderalis speech. -_- this was a new vendor for me this year, i may have to shop around next season...

The Critical Purple are about as tall as me at this point and buds are stacking up very quickly,.. had i known these plants would take so long to flower i definitely would have opted for a larger pot size, but these things happen i guess ....I pulled a GWS, a finished CP and another GG auto this weeks as well :)

The CP are becoming pretty top heavy and i find myself picking 1-2 from the ground each visit, I waited the containers with stones to see if this would help. The 3 remaining CP stand as tall as me in their containers (6ft) and are 107 days from seed, i'm expecting a pretty decent yield from them in October :)

The wind had been pretty violent over the weekend so i came out today for some damage control, It was messy but could have been worse ..we're also expecting 2 consecutive nights of 36f temperatures this week and i'd REALLY hate to pull them with anything less than 8 weeks of flower...i'll be checking them a little more closely now and hopefully i t doesn't get as cold as predicted...

My remaining plants were taken down 10 days ago and allowed to dry @65F /60-65%RH for 8 days before jarring. They prob could have made it another week outside but i didn't want to chance the cold. The dry weight was just over 5oz for the 2 plants pictured, 4 oz of bud and another Oz of popcorn. This strain is GREAT for sleep but can be a real daytime motivation killer.

Thanks a million for the reply :) so they do experience a small flowering stretch? I'm sorry i should have been more specific. I've grow outdoor photoperiod plants most my life and Iv'e always noted a slowing of growth near the end of veg that lasts thru until pre-flower and then (almost over night) they will go thru a significant stretch. I was wondering if i should expect the same behavior from an auto?
Athos
Athoscommented6 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, yes you can expect the same behavior. Although the slowing of growth during veg is usually due the lack of space in the pot, if you were to up pot at that point there would be no slowing in growth.

You’re killing it with the memes and the plants! I’m jelly you’re able to grow outdoors 🙃
Rad2thebone
Rad2thebonecommented4 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, ahh quite controlling I see. Haha I’m kidding. That definitely makes sense though. Cloning is another practice I’d love to try. My tent is small as well (3’x2’) I’m running two autos in it and both have completely filled my tent wall to wall. I’ll be only running one at a time from now on. I’m giving you a follow cause you’re cool and you grow some awesome stuff!
Kitties_and_Colas
Kitties_and_Colascommented4 years ago
@Rad2thebone, the big one is that i can't pull the trigger on when the plant starts to flower..if i have an unhappy or sick photoperiod plant, i can veg it out and decide when to flower and decide on size of yield..another thing is we smoke a bunch so we like to grow perpetually, we keep a few mom's around and clone them often...I don't mind autos outdoors (and they seem to do the best for us there) but having them indoors tends to mess up our routine, that and our veg tent is only a 2x4 (4x4 for flower) so it becomes a space issue as well... we have a bunch of autoflower diaries, 90% are plants bought as feminized but turned out to be autos.. this diary is the only time we deliberately purchased autos (and of course they weren't autos lol)
Rad2thebone
Rad2thebonecommented4 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, Dang that’s sucky, hopefully ilgm is better for you. As far as autos go, is it the yield or the quality that you don’t like? I’m on my first grow right now and it’s an auto but I have a photo g13 haze that I’ll play around with next just to try something else out. Hopefully this auto turns out nice though.

@YBorSchmeebor, yeah...we're in the far NE United States (10min from Canada) and the wind is awful late in the season...we drop them in holes sometimes to stabilize them...these outgrew their containers in veg, they were sold as autoflowers but were definitely photoperiod

justright
justrightcommentedweek 204 years ago
Wow, I don't know what to say about this one. I get a 6 week veg and 12 week flower. Opposite of what you got. If these would have been grow till the very end. This would have been at least a 6 month plant 😮 I want to get a few seeds into a friends hands so he can try them out doors. This is one strain that always does great for me. I did do a pair recently. But experimented with the whole auto line up. My results were not good. I am back to my normal ways now. I am working my way through your journals now

justrightcommented4 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, That sucks to hear. I know there support sucks. They give the same line over and over. I would ditch these guys if they were not the only place for me to get these seeds.
Kitties_and_Colas
Kitties_and_Colascommented4 years ago
@justright these were labeled "autoflower" but every seed in that pack was photoperiod.. I've seen diaries of this strain and week 5-7 seems to be the average time for buds to start but these grew on the same timeline as the other photoperiods we had in the field.. I wrote Grower's Choice about this but they just gave a generic ruderalis speech... we've had lots of seeds since from them marked "photoperiod" that were autoflowers.. it was getting expensive dealing with Grower's Choice, our last seed pack (and an angry friend's) of GDP fem only had 1 photoperiod the rest auto and unusablefor our purposes... that was the final straw..after 3 years of hit/miss, i just don't trust their seeds anymore 😕

At 10 weeks your Critical Purple should have started flowering. Mine started showing those cotton balls at 5 or 6 weeks. Mine look nothing like yours. Is it possible you mixed them up? Otherwise I'd contact Growers choice and show them some pics. Maybe they screwed up?
VToutdoor
VToutdoorcommented6 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, sorry you had that experience. We are having pretty good luck except for mites getting to them. All 5 seeds popped and are flowering like mad. 21 days till harvest. My husband chose auto flower by accident but I was so impressed I bought a few more varieties.
