Still quite a stocky seedling but growing outwards nicely. I’ll start LST with her soon.

Not much to say other than I’ve got a magnesium deficiency. I’m adjusting the feed by leaving out calcium this week and adding more magnesium to see how it goes. Plant is short and bushy with close node spacing. Using tap water @ 250ppm Feeding GHF ‘Hybrids’ Powder at 0.6 grams per litre. I usually use GHF Calcium powder @ 1 grams per litre. 1 ml per litre of Plagron Pure Zyme 1 ml per litre of ‘Moonshine’ 1ml per litre of liquid seaweed. All the above is diluted by 40%-50% to reach about 550 ppm. Adding 2 ml per litre of Canna Magnesium Mono which brings the PPMs up to 750. PH adjusted down to 6.5. Also have a CO2 bag in the tent. Light is set at 400w hps. Soil is Biobizz light mix.

Grow Questions

I’ve got a problem but not sure what it is. It appears to be yellowing in the leaves, maybe a magnesium lockout despite me adding magnesium and calcium. I had the same problem with my last grow but it’s much worse with this one. I’ve checked and calibrated my ph pen. Im blaming the soil which is Biobiz light mix. Please see photos for week 4 and tell me what you think. Thanks.

Moved fromgeneral comments: My opinion is based on something that happened to me during a grow. I believe that you are locking out your magnesium because of the high amounts of calcium in your solution. You are already using tap water which generally has plenty of calcium at 250ppm. Cut out the calcium and the extra magnesium. I just looked at the analysis for ghf hybrids and there is plenty of magnesium in there. You might be over thinking the nutrients a bit. Trust me, go back to the bare basics...I literally have a sign in my grow room that says "Quit adding extra shit unless you are doing a side by side trial!!!"

The magnesium deficiency has been resolved. I stopped adding extra calcium to the feed mix and gave her several good waterings with feed until I got some run off. Nutrients are: GHF Hybrids: 0.6 grams per litre GHF Booster 0.3 grams per litre Liquids added are Moonshine, Plagron Pure Zyme and liquid seaweed all at 1ml per litre. Diluted to 650ppm at PH 6.0 She’s a much happier plant now still growing vigorously but is the first one I’ve grown with such tight node spacing and is very bushy. Lots of the bud points are in shade under big fan leaves although they are peaking through a bit now she’s started flowering. Might start some LST under a net this week.

Flowering is well underway and she is stretching nicely. Plenty of bud points are evident, I can see now why Northern Lights has a reputation as being a high yealder. I’ve not bothered to do any proper LST other than some strategic tucking of fan leaves. Feed mixture is the same as week 5 just without as much diluting. PPM is about 760, PH around 6.5. Other than some turned up edges of leaves, she appears a very healthy happy plant. I’ve moved the light further away.

Big stretch this week, she gets thirsty and hungry but rewards with fast growth and a very pleasing odour. Feed mix is: GHF Hybrids powder @ 0.5 grams/litre GHF Booster powder @ 0.5 grams/litre Liquids: Moonshine, Plagron Pure Zyme Liquid Seaweed All liquids mixed at 1 ml per litre. I accidentally broke my PH pen this week but the tap water around here is usually around PH 7 and 250 ppm. Feed is diluted using tap water to 900 ppm. No issues at all thankfully, just a lovely dank smell.

This Northern Lights Auto is the biggest Auto plant I’ve grown. She has comfortably filled my tent, looks set for a big harvest.

She looks and smells beautiful now. RQS have bred a really lovely Northern Light Auto. A big yield is coming for sure, the buds are filling out quickly. The leaves, especially the big fan leaves, look a little pale and there’s some signs of nitrogen deficiency in the lowest fans so I will increase the feed strength a bit and see how she reacts over the next week. She may not be ready in 10 weeks but I’m going to go long on this one, at least 12 weeks maybe more.

What a difference a week makes! This plant has me worried at the speed it’s changed colour. The buds are big but not quite mature yet. I’m turning down the light to 250w which will reduce the day temperature in the tent to about 20 degrees.

Happy Harvest Day!

Harvested earlier than I wanted due to a deficiency caused by cold roots. The smoke has a cerebral and creative buzz with a pleasant taste so far and it’s nowhere near cured. Not that strong so I’ll make some bubble hash from it.

This plant tested my growing skills and taught me a few lessons. Adding too much calcium caused a lockout in wk 4 which the plant recovered from. The plant then showed great vigour in flower which might have meant I was under feeding it when I should have given more. This might have compounded the next big problem which meant that the whole plant turned line green at week 9 when it was not really ready to harvest. It was suffering from some shock which might have because of the root temp dropping to low and therefore causing lockout at a the most crucial time. I should have had a heat mat and some insulation around the fabric pot. She continued to mature but looked very yellow so I cut her down before she deteriorated further. She still managed to produce a big yield, my biggest from one plant. The smoke is tolerable but I wanted to see some dark trichs before harvest to see what that’s like but never got that far with this plant. I’ll grow this strain again to see if I can avoid the problems.

hahaha, ask 4 gowers you get 4 answers. To me it looks like lightburn. Your plant is growing very dense with a short intenodial distance, so i see, the light is very close to your girl. And if light and heat of the HID are blating on her, she looks like that. Rise your lights, your girl will stretch more and the new leaves will look better. The burned ones wont recover.

@@@themilkman, I agree and did pretty much exactly that today to see how it goes. Fed her 550ppm with GHF Hybrids base nutrients and the same a couple of days ago at feeding time. Added 1ml of Magnesium sulphate per litre of water as I read it’s hard to over do it with magnesium. It’s hard to say for sure but I think that the variegation in the newer leaves is not looking as bad today and growth is still quite quick, just very tight node spacing which I think is genetic.

@Jungian79, The GHF hybrid nutrients seem like they would be pretty complete on their own especially with tap water. If this was my grow I would ditch all the extras and just go with the base powder to about 500 ppm pH it and call it a day. My opinion is that you will have healthier plants and save yourself some cash. I have purchased more nutrients and additives than I care to admit and ultimately I have ended up with a 1 part nutrient, Cal Mag (only because I use RO water), Epsom Salt at 1.25 g/gallon and some pH up. That is all. I add the Epsom salt only because I get a very slight magnesium deficiency that shows up week 3ish of veg, which makes sense. I only feed at around 400ppm in Veg and that seems to grow them well without wasting a boatload of nutrients. The 700ppm and up is best left for flowering. IMO.

@@@themilkman, Hi, yes I’m coming around to that theory too. I read somewhere that too much calcium can cause lock out issues and as I’m using tap water in a hard water area it’s worth not adding too much cal if it’s not needed.

Glad that dropping the Ca helped you out, It was almost exactly what had happened to me! Nice job straightening that out.
