This Northern Lights Auto is the biggest Auto plant I’ve grown. She has comfortably filled my tent, looks set for a big harvest.

Grow Questions

I’ve got a problem but not sure what it is. It appears to be yellowing in the leaves, maybe a magnesium lockout despite me adding magnesium and calcium. I had the same problem with my last grow but it’s much worse with this one. I’ve checked and calibrated my ph pen. Im blaming the soil which is Biobiz light mix. Please see photos for week 4 and tell me what you think. Thanks.

Moved fromgeneral comments: My opinion is based on something that happened to me during a grow. I believe that you are locking out your magnesium because of the high amounts of calcium in your solution. You are already using tap water which generally has plenty of calcium at 250ppm. Cut out the calcium and the extra magnesium. I just looked at the analysis for ghf hybrids and there is plenty of magnesium in there. You might be over thinking the nutrients a bit. Trust me, go back to the bare basics...I literally have a sign in my grow room that says "Quit adding extra shit unless you are doing a side by side trial!!!"

hahaha, ask 4 gowers you get 4 answers. To me it looks like lightburn. Your plant is growing very dense with a short intenodial distance, so i see, the light is very close to your girl. And if light and heat of the HID are blating on her, she looks like that. Rise your lights, your girl will stretch more and the new leaves will look better. The burned ones wont recover.

@@@themilkman, I agree and did pretty much exactly that today to see how it goes. Fed her 550ppm with GHF Hybrids base nutrients and the same a couple of days ago at feeding time. Added 1ml of Magnesium sulphate per litre of water as I read it’s hard to over do it with magnesium. It’s hard to say for sure but I think that the variegation in the newer leaves is not looking as bad today and growth is still quite quick, just very tight node spacing which I think is genetic.

@Jungian79, The GHF hybrid nutrients seem like they would be pretty complete on their own especially with tap water. If this was my grow I would ditch all the extras and just go with the base powder to about 500 ppm pH it and call it a day. My opinion is that you will have healthier plants and save yourself some cash. I have purchased more nutrients and additives than I care to admit and ultimately I have ended up with a 1 part nutrient, Cal Mag (only because I use RO water), Epsom Salt at 1.25 g/gallon and some pH up. That is all. I add the Epsom salt only because I get a very slight magnesium deficiency that shows up week 3ish of veg, which makes sense. I only feed at around 400ppm in Veg and that seems to grow them well without wasting a boatload of nutrients. The 700ppm and up is best left for flowering. IMO.

@@@themilkman, Hi, yes I’m coming around to that theory too. I read somewhere that too much calcium can cause lock out issues and as I’m using tap water in a hard water area it’s worth not adding too much cal if it’s not needed.

Glad that dropping the Ca helped you out, It was almost exactly what had happened to me! Nice job straightening that out.
