EDIT FROM WEEK 3:: I screwed up using my timer and it turns out these first two weeks were under full light 24/7. Didn't realize/remember there was an 'outlet' setting, probably used it while setting up and never switched back. Corrected and edits made Saturday August 31, 2019.
(SUMMARY: Good start. Began seeds in water, transferred to soil after taproots became visible after 24 hours. Took almost 7 full days to break the surface. GG#4 had a bit of inner shell still keeping its leaves together despite being almost 2". Delicately removed the skin and within a couple hours the leaves spread out and relaxed. Took a few days to get used to growing in a tent (my first time indoors!) and learning how to manage heat/humidity and negative pressure. I began journaling daily in Office, and will continue to do so. Below are my first week's entries!)
Day 1: Thursday August 15, 2019
Seeds selected and placed in warm water to soak. 1x GG#4 Fem, 1x Tonic Ryder Auto Fem.
Day 2: Friday August 16, 2019
Seeds finished 24 hour soak. Placed in paper towel and soaked in warm water. Placed on saucer on kitchen shelf, away from strong light or sources of heat.
Day 3: Saturday August 17, 2019
Taproots have sprouted. Resoaked paper towel; needs to wait one more night for me to buy pots/soil.
Day 4: Sunday August 18, 2019
Purchased 2x 20” plastic pots, Promix organic veggie soil. Planted seeds, watered with room temp RO. Leaving pots in front of patio windows for light, tent setup missing one hose clamp and power access. Waiting on Amazon delivery to move forward.
Day 5: Monday August 19, 2019
No progress. Parts have arrived and tent is fully functional. No major defects or issues. Watered. One hygrometer set on rim of pots under direct light, one meter strapped to power stack with probe hanging down roughly 2’ from the floor. Timer set to 20/4.
Day 6: Tuesday August 20, 2019
No progress. Excellent negative pressure. Watered plants. Extremely dry reading under direct light. 30*C @ 50% RH. Installed water wick.
Day 7: Wednesday August 21, 2019
0630h
No progress. 29.2*C @ 49% RH on rim. On advice, moved rim meter to lamp via magnet. Probe reading at 26.1*C @ 66%RH. Probe base at 25.5*C. Water wick completely empty, cloth still quite wet. Replaced with larger reservoir (about double). Not sure how to mitigate such high temperature as the current heatwave has our ambient at around 30*C most days. Negative pressure has maximized over previous 24 hours; the effects initially concerned me as the tent was extremely concave. Structure seems perfectly stable but still concerned about the exhaust fan wear and tear. Must purchase additional fire alarm for basement as a precaution, due to sudden influx of budget electrical equipment in a humid environment. Depending on the variances in hygro readings tomorrow, may relocate meter to near probe to test/benchmark against eachother.
1400h
GG#4 has sprouted! TRCBD still unseen; scraped topsoil to loosen/lessen top layer. Hygro readings still way off, wondering if being adhered to the lamp is more of an issue than I predicted. Water wick was a silly idea, the negative pressure sucked all the water through the cloth onto the floor. Plastic/Mylar floor pan surprisingly easy to maintain; no leaks, all nicely pooled. Thanks, manufacturer! Cleaned it up at 0700h, left large bowl of water in the corner instead. Upon checking at 1400h humidity was 68% and the floor was dry. Temp was still high, 28*C. May need to install a more powerful fan/air conditioning unit/air intake. Concerned about pests having a way in, basement is a suboptimal environment to begin with. Leaving one vent corner open, adhering halfway.
EDIT FROM WEEK 3:: I screwed up using my timer and it turns out these first two weeks were under full light 24/7. Didn't realize/remember there was an 'outlet' setting, probably used it while setting up and never switched back. Corrected and edits made Saturday August 31, 2019.
Day 8: Thursday August 22, 2019
0630h
No major progress. GG#4 looks healthy, green and moist. Soil smells clean and dry. Scraped more topsoil from TRCBD and found the healthy seedling. Covered with dusting of soil. Misted each plant ~200mL. Leaving vent open, temp seems stable at 26*C, humidity readings averaging 55%.
Day 9: Friday August 23, 2019
0630h
GG#4 is slightly taller than yesterday, with noticeably firmer stalk. Removed dust from top of TRCBD, leaving exposed to light. Seems firm enough. Hopefully the GG#4 doesn’t take off too much quicker, otherwise TRCBD may struggle with appropriate lighting in it’s shadow. Atmosphere is stable at 25*C and 50% RH. Would like to see that humidity bumped up to sixty or even sixty-five percent; considering daily wet towels or a larger bowl of water. Daily hot water? Maybe the diffuser. Leaving ventilation as-is for now. Outside temps have been cooling off these last few days, feels more like fall. Overnight lows of 10-15*.
Day 10: Saturday August 24, 2019
1300h
Both sprouts above ground and have shed their seed shells. GG#4 very tall and firm, TRCBD leaves opened up very beautifully. Watered heavily to try and increase humidity when I came home last night, around 0330h, but no noticeable change in average readings across my three devices. Holding steady at 25*C and 50% RH. Asking advice on humidity, been told not to worry so much and 50% is perfectly fine. [ADDITIONAL NOTE: harvested my outdoor male plant colas yesterday in plastic zipper bag. Left portion of the seal open to prevent moisture buildup while leaves and stalks dry. Hopefully some pollen will be salvageable and can be preserved for genetic research at a later date.]
Day 11: Sunday August 25, 2019
1400h
Both sprouts opening wide to the light. Atmosphere steady at 25*C 55%. Swapped water dish out for a much larger cooking pot, to increase surface area of water exposed to air. Also added diffusser with plain water on 6h cycles to get more mist in the air. Need to buy an oscillating fan before they get too tall as the small circular fan in one direction doesnt seem to produce enough air current. [ADDITIONAL OUTDOOR HARVEST NOTE: Great googly moogly the spiders!! Holy handgrenade do they ever blend in with pollen sacks or what!? Thank whatever gods exist that I left it all in a ziploc, hopefully none of those creepy little assholes figured out where the door was. Wishful thinking though, Im sure. Forget that crop and it's civilization of arachnid stowaways, it was just bagseed anyway. Immediately sealed and tossed out with the trash]
Day 12: Monday August 26, 2019
0400h
25*C @ 56%. Both looking strong. Climate is holding steady, curious now about C02 levels and such. Watered thoroughly. Lights scheduled at 18/6 now, and will remain as such for the duration of the lifespan of the Tonic Ryder (autoflowering, should be done in 8 weeks). The plan as it stands is to then change to the 12/12 period to trigger the flowering phase for the GG#4.
Day 13: Tuesday August 27, 2019
0400h
No major developmental changes. Climate steady. GG#4 looking more green on the portions of leaf that were still yellow from being tangled up in the seed husk. Soil feels healthy and smells clean. Considering how I "hatched" these seeds I wonder if I have robbed them of critical stress during development that would otherwise have contributed to stronger growth. Something, something, butterfly cocoons etc. Too late to worry about that now.
Day 14: Wednesday August 28, 2019
0400h
No major physical changes. Foliage opening and looking less moist. Climate steady.
Day 15: Thirsday August 29, 2019
0400
New middle leaves on GG#4 have begun to open up. TRCBD still looks small with no obvious major growth, but healthy nontheless. Upon close comparison of pics taken earlier in the week, there are new leaves now buddimg in the center.
Day 16: Friday August 30, 2019
1600h
Noticable changes in TRCBD colour near center of leaves. Not sure if mellowing as it matures or nutrients. GG#4 growing well, some upward curling near edges of leaves.
Day 17: Saturday August 31, 2019
0830h
Nice and healthy. Humidity trending downwards, currently 50%. Activated humidifier, target 55%. GG has a strange curling, particularly the leaf currently pointing West (leftward pointing in above pics). Looks like physical damage but no contact since the leaves popped. Strange.
0900h
Overwatering. The cause of upward leaf curl, especially at this young age, is very likely too much love. I have been misting each plant to the tune of 200mL every other day or so. Internet research has concluded that I am watering too much. Will keep the climate in a comfortable mid-fifties, and wait for the leaves to smooth out. A friend has given me a rule of thumb: nice flat leaves are the goal. The direction they curl tells you how much water they are getting, go the opposite way until they are flat. Do this either by reducing the amount you use on the same schedule, or spacing the schedule out more.
0915h
Guess who doesn't know how to use a timer? THIS GUY! Had the darn thing set to Outlet mode. Never noticed because I set the dark times for the hours I am either at work, or sleeping due to night shift. Now that I have corrected it, the plants are *actually* on an 18/6 schedule.
1730hh
Hygrometer history shows the tent temp during cool/dark period was 21*C. That should be a perfect coolness for stimulating those nice dark colours I'm hoping to showcase in these genetics. Only time will tell if I have the right phenotype and pull it off correctly, however.
Day 18: Sunday September 1, 2019
1530h
Climate steady. Plants healthy. No significant changes.
Day 19: Monday Sept 2, 2019
1230h
Plants are responding well to missing yesterdays water. Climate is optimal. Considering starting to top the GG#4.
Day 20: Tuesday Sept 3, 2019
1630h
No major developments, didn't have time to snap a pic. Leaving tent untouched for sake of 24 hour reading.
Day 21: Wednesday Sept 4, 2019
0500h
Humidity nice and high. Over 60%. Both plants showing some solid growth, signs of overwatering diminishing. Yellowing leaves on TRCBD have me investigating CalMag and ReeferTilizer. Not sure if nutrient deficiency or just a mellowing of the plant's colour.
Day 22: Thursday Sept 5, 2019
0430h
Looking good. TRCBD lagging behind the GG#4, not sure if that is my fault or just a function of being an auto vs a photo? Figured it would be the other way around. Time will tell. Ordering Reefertilizer this weekend. Likely cutting back to updates weekly or every few days, as needed or as thoughts occur. Will try and take daily pics though.
Day 25: Sunday Sept 8, 2019
1300h
Tonic Ryder is so small in comparison. I don't understand. I have reached out to other growers familiar with Ryder genetics, mostly on Reddit since im new here, but so far no explanation. Should be well into growing it's 5-pointers by now as far as i can tell. Both plants pictured above started the same day.
1620h
Burned one in the tent. Ventilation is awesome, no smoke or smell in the house outside of it at all! Was kinda sorta trying to see if it really would keep the flowering fragrance trapped and can confidently say it will. Couldnt even hotbox, the smoke drew into the filter real quick. PROTIP: if sealing yourself inside a tent for a sesh, do not lose track of the zipper. It will make the paranoia worse when you cant get out.
Day 26: Monday Sept 9, 2019
1330h
Lookin good. Small progress but getting there. Colder temps coming at night now, curious how it will effect them. By setting the 6 hours of dark to mid morning, hopefully the house isnt cold enough to effect the grow.
Day 27: Tuesday Sept 10, 2019
1630h
GG#4 is looking good. First layer of 5 pointers just popped, going to top at the next one probably some time next week. TRCBD starting to show signs of some three pointers, nice to see a little progress. All feedback and advice has been positive. Just received my ReeferTilizer today, going to start with next week's watering
Why is the Tonic Ryder so much smaller than the GG#4 even though i started them on the same day in the same earth? Is it a function of the different genetics or am I screwing up?
It's all about the genetic , some strains are slow to start and some are slow to finish. Some strains are more vigorous than the others but it is not really a clue about the size of the future trees : the smaller could become the bigger
Day 32: Sunday Sept 15, 2019
1500h
Plants are looking good. GG#4 is really stretching. Defoliated seedling leaves and one-pointers as they were completely shadowed by the multis. Topping the next node and should begin training soon. TRCBD still chuggin, but small. Some neat growth that looks like pistils now developing, not sure what it is. Very curious strain, never experienced genetics quite like this. Watered both on Thursday (Day 29) with ReeferTilizer Grow. Climate has averaged 55% and 24° almost perfectly for over a week. Rearranged the tent to have the pots a bit further to the back, and the light with them. Want to get the filter rotated and more centered for better coverage. Considering putting my old Honeywell HEPA filter outside the tent and aiming the air into a vent.
Day 33: Monday Sept 16, 2019
1500h
Well, looks like the TRCBD is a dud. Somehow already flowering. Genetics have been questionable since pretty much day ten, so I cant say it is surprising. Disappointing for sure, i was growing that one for my dad's EOL pain management. Considering the cost of those seeds i wonder if it was the watering situation that stressed it out enough, i find it hard to believe it was just dud genetics. I am going to keep taking care of it and see where this goes, i may post it to r/nanogrowery so everyone can bawww over the cute little bud. GG#4 looking good.
Day 34: Tuesday Sept 17, 2019
1500h
TRCBD is dying. Gorilla Glue doing well, almost ready to top. Can see the node clearly now, just want a little more stretch to make sure i don't FIM.
Day 36: Thursday Sept 19, 2019
1500h
The TRCBD is officially dying. Not worth updating anymore. Unfortunate turn of events but I am reassured that this sometimes happens, even with designer genetics. Good lessons regardless, so never a loss. Looking like we still need GG to stretch a wee bit more, to guarantee a proper topping. This week? (He says again). At least now i can focus on one plant and just top/scrog till its huge. Watered with Reefertilizer, foliage looking a little droopy.
Day 37: Friday Sept 20, 2019
1400h
Topped GG. Looking healthy and plumped a bit from watering. Topping is for sure scary your first time. Here you are, about to take snips to the beautiful center of this 5 week project, it certainly bears pausing to make sure you understand whats going on. But so far, so good. I waited until i had two full sets of 5 point leaves, despite having a fourth node. Had this plant only grown one set of 3-pointers i probably would have chopped at the third node.
Day 41: Tuesday Sept 24, 2019
0430h
Looking healthy, took to the chop rather nicely. Looking at those bottom leaves next, not much light down there. Pronounced fresh smell upon opening the tent. Watering tonight with plain, no nutes.
1900h
Watered generously. Trimmed fan leaves from first node.
Day 47: Saturday Sept 28, 2019
2000h
Decided to go with lollipopping as my primary stress/manicure procedure and shaved off sugar leaves from lower nodes. Current plan is to remove fan leaves after third and final topping (8 colas) just so she can keep a little extra food around. Watering with nutes tonight, following level two ReeferTilizer protocoll. She smells amazingly fresh, so sweet.
Day 51: Wednesday Oct 3, 2019
0430h
Topped again. Watered with plain R.O., no nutes. Began training new growth.
Day 55: Sunday October 6, 2019
1700h
So thursday was day 1 of week #8 from seed; the first week of full strength fertilizer. It was going well until friday night they looked thirsty, and i watered again....with the same water from the day before, rich in nutrients. Cue chemical burn. The stems of my older growth turned deep magenta, an effect i originally enjoyed thinking it was a sign of colourful genetics! The yellowish tinge in the leaves was my first red flag, as that was how we lost TRCBD last month. Once they started to show burn spots i knew my mistake. I pruned off the lower fan leaves, eliminating the purple-stemmed portions of the plant. The main stalk appears to have purple streaks running along it's entire length so we may yet lose her. Only time will tell. All that remains now are the trained newgrowth branches and their soon-to-be-topped offshoots. Their stems are currently healthy green, despite yellowish wrinkly foliage. Hopefully we are not too late. I was planning on lollipopping anyway once the next round of topping resulted in eight heads to spread out, so im not too broken up yet.
2200h
Already looking healthier after the flush. Leaves are puffing up, and colour is deepening. New training wires assembled for improved control.
Day 57: Tuesday October 8, 2019
1500h
Looks like recovery is well under way. Healthy new growth, nice colour, good development speed. Trained all four nodes. Looking to top one final time for eight total primary nodes. Allowing roots to dry out until next week begins on Thurs.
Day 59: Thurs Oct 10 2019
1300h
On the mend. Keeping flushes up, hoping for the best.
Day 63: Monday, October 14 2019
Seems to be recovering well over the weekend.
Day 68: Saturday October 19, 2019
1500h
Things are looking good. Shes starting to show some remaining signs of chemical burn as the leaves seem to be yellowing between the veins, and the purple seems to be migrating into newer growth. Hopefully these flushes will help clear it out. Growth is slow, but coming. All eight tops are clearly visible now, and stretching vertically. Once they are long enough, they will be trained apart; ideally into the eight points of an octagon.
Day 87: Thursday Nov 7, 2019
Assuming death of old growth is underwatering, undernutrients. Watered with nutes again, at half the recommended week 1 dose. (Used 1/2 tsp to 2.5L) Some yellowing in the tips of new growth has contributed to my nutrient concerns. This may also be lumen burn.
Day 89: Saturday Nov 9, 2019
Backed the lights off a little as the new growth is still expressing yellowness in the tips.
Day 91: Monday Nov 11, 2019
Ok call me crazy but i think this plant looks happy today. We might have this figured out, folks. Time will tell, but i'm optimistic.
Day 101: November 21, 2019
Wow, over 100 days. I never expected it to take this long, but what a testament to the resilience of this life form! Looks like it is on the mend now for sure, lots of growth and good colour. Very thirsty these days, taking almost 2.5L with very little runoff.
Day 108: Thursday November 28, 2019
Looking great i think. I have not been watering enough at all. Now that each plant drinks a gallon they are showing serious growth. Fun learning process!
