Sprouted at the first of February and here we are at the 12/12 flip. Recently transplanted from 1 gal to 3 gal fabric pot with coco coir. First time using a trellis net but I think I got the tabletop down 😜
Completed the first full week on the 12/12 light cycle. All the bud sites perked up after a couple days in the trellis net. This is a very bushy plant! I've defoliated a little every day to clear covered bud sites but a heavy defoliation is needed. I'm seeing water spots on some of the leaves where they touch and overlap so I've moved my fan from below the net to above to dissipate the moisture.
The tops are a little taller and showing a lighter color as the bud start to form. At the beginning of the week I went through the bottom of the canopy and remove any bud sites that were too small to reach the light or rerouted those that were long enough to reach through the foliage. Fan leaves are removed if covering any bud site or too low to see any light, but this has been needed less and less each day. I drop the Calmag down a little as we get more into the budding stage but everything else remains the same.
Buds are taking form and the leaves are getting covered in trichoms. I bumped up the Bloom nutrients just a tad. All in all things are coming along great!
These buds are looking awesome! We're well past the early flower stretch as the hight this week has remained the same. My tap water has had a lower pH as of late so no adjustment solution has been needed. I spent 30 minutes clearing out the dead leaves from the bottom and removed a few live ones from the top that were blocking bud sights. I will need to defoliated throughout the canopy to allow airflow but all and all things are looking good.
It's amazing how much can change in a week. Most of the white pistols have turned orange and the buds are looking more mature than last week. The plant did gain about an inch so the lights had to be raised just a bit. I defoliated pretty heavily right after last week's update, and the plant looked a lot different than before, but since then she's filled out more for today's photo shoot. Though with most of the major fan leaves gone there is more light exposure to the mid-canopy bud sites and they are more visible from the top and side views.
Overall I was happy with the number buds I am getting out of this scrog setup, I was concerned about the buds being a little on the small size. That concern is now diminished because these buds are getting fat!
I began the week with a 1/5 solution nutrient mix watering followed by a full nutrient flush 12 hours later, removing the runoff. My thinking being that I would dilute the medium before flushing out excess nutrients as the runoff was looking a little darker than normal. I pH tested the runoff and got 5.8, which Google searches said was about right, though sources pH ranges varied.
I noticed a little discoloration appearing on some of the leaves during last week's update. Hopefully it's all part of the bud ripening process, but I thought it was a little early for that given this strain takes 10-12 weeks flowering to finish, and it was only week 6. If not the buds ripening then it could either be nutrient burn or light burn. My COB lights can be as close as 12" but I bumped them up to 13" just in case. Several days later a flushed the medium with 4 gallons of regular water at pH 6.1 followed by a 2 gallon flush of nutrient water.
All the leaves continue to lighten in color so it is likely just what this strain is like when it finishes up. The buds are looking more like something you would smoke and the smell become more noticeable outside the closet 🙂
Not much to report other than things looking a little riper. Just playing the waiting game as we end week 8 but I began looking at the trichomes just in case this one wants to finish early. The leaves are beginning to turn colors as she finishes up and the remaining white pistols are turning orange as well. Trichomes on the fan leaves are showing some amber but the ones on the calyx are still on the clear side.
I spent the week looking at trichomes until yesterday when I decided they look about right to me. The top buds are definitely looking ready but I've also kept a close eye on those in the middle. I began with a regular watering of clean pH'd water until my new TDS meter delivered today. Ended up doing to 3 gal flush to bring the ppm down to reasonable levels. Will continue with feeding only water for the next few day until harvest.
Harvest on day 76 of flower. Gave plain water that had been aerated for 24 hours then pH adjusted up to day 74, flushed with non-pH'd water and left the plant in 36 hours of darkness before harvest this morning.
Harvested on day 76 of flower and hung to dry in the grow tent at ~55 RH. The plant foliage was very dense so I wound up with quite a bit of larf. I had to cut most of the branches from the main stem in a staggered pattern to thin them out and had to re-purpose my trellis frame for drying. At day 7 the smaller branches were ready for curing, which was much sooner than I anticipated so was up until 3AM processing half of the entire plant, with the remainder being ready at the 10 day mark.
Top colas: 105g
Reg buds: 76g
TOTAL: 181g
Larf, Trim and shake: 260g
Plan on making hash from this and pressing it into rosin.
So far I've mostly only tried the hash and kief on top of a little of the dry bud and it tastes like what I could only describe as bananas. This is the first time I've seen kief melt and bubble on my bowl so A+ on that. The buds still need to cure but this stuff works like a charm, much better than what I've harvest in my first two grows for sure. Now I'm not the ideal person to judge the taste and quality of cannabis, but the effect is definitely there which is all I care about.
If I was growing this again I would have tried to remove more of the larfy buds hidden in the middle of the canopy. I should have removed more cola sites to make it easier to access the lower branches for defoliation. The fewer colas wouldn't have mattered with the ending harvest weight as the plant could have dedicated more energy to building bigger buds instead of 200 or so grams of larf. For the trellis net, stick to having 1 cola per square, remove any branch you even think could be too thin, and remove any bud sites below the third row on the stem. They will keep growing back so you'll have to keep on top of it throughout the flower cycle. With the thickness of the canopy I'm lucky I wind up with mold. I got a few clones before switching to flower and have one growing in my back yard at 5 ft tall now. I'll practice what I've learned and hope to end with a better ratio of buds to larf.
I totally would like growing this strain again. I had a 3 pack of seeds but only 1 made it through, so I would like to get quite a few next time and pheno hunt for the best quality of the bunch.
Will update again after curing.
