These seeds are from Original Sensible Seeds.
Started in Rapid Rooter and then had to be transferred into Solo cup for a while. Now in final grow bag. The roots were starting to wind around the base of the cup so hopefully it takes a liking to the larger container.
June 30: Weather has been cool and rainy lately.
July 7: very rainy summer so far.
July 10: Devil XL is certainly a large and fast growing plant.
July 11: tied to tomato cage this morning. The plant grew almost an inch overnight. 😎
July 16: took off one big fan leaf that was shading things. More rain again today....it’s been ages since I’ve had to do much watering.
July 18: applied Green House Feeding’s Enhancer as a foliar spray. This plant is slightly bigger than Wonder Pie #1 despite being started a few days later. These plants are growing about an inch every day now. Devil XL is a very big and fast growing plant. 😎
July 21: I’m really impressed with the growth of this plant. Looks great 🤠
July 25: added about 2 cm of soil as some roots were showing. Progressing nicely.
July 26: Using pipe cleaners and paper clips for LST. Super easy and effective way to do it. 😎
July 27: continuing LST for a few more days but I’ll have to rearrange things to support heavy branches here pretty soon. 😎
July 30: it grew over an inch overnight. 🤠
Aug 11: looks good but buds are ripening more slowly than on my Gorilla Glue Auto that was started at about the same time.
Aug 15: adjusted LST to now be supporting branches.
Aug 16: tried pollinating a lower branch.
Aug 17: continuing with molasses in pHed water. Will re-start adding Epsom salts and calcium citrate because my water source has high sodium. Need to better balance cation ratios so soil doesn’t have too much sodium.
Hot again today so I suppose the yellow tinge could be heat stress. By 10:30 pm the plant has mostly regained its green colour, so I’m thinking it’s just heat stress.
Aug 19: just water today as I think I need to ease up on the molasses late in my grows.
Aug 23: did the flush this morning. Harvest should be in about two weeks.
Aug 17 final pic...this plant looks a bit yellow...is that N deficiency? Or is it normal for this stage for this plant? Other ideas?
Thanks and GD rocks. 😎
Aug 26: took off some big yellow fan leaves. Need to wait three weeks for seeds to form so this plant will keep going for at least another 11 days. Labour Day weekend harvest. 🤠
Aug 29: still going good.just pHed water.
Aug 31: it was unexpectedly only 2 C last night but all plants were on the warming table and seem fine today.
Sep 1: took 11 g wet weight tester.
Sep 2: took another 10 g tester as I was a bit suspicious about bud rot. If it was I got it early but I’m not convinced it was a bud rot. Either way, she’s pretty much done and I’m just waiting a few more days for the seeds to form.
Sep 3: likely the final week. Just pHed water.
Have been taking off some yellow fan leaves each day as she ripens.
Sep 4: 94 days from seed and into the dark garage for harvest in the dark tomorrow morning.
Sep 5: harvested 334 g wet weight and left the seeded branch and larf for another week. Plus 21 g wet testers for a total so far of 355 g wet.
Sep 7: fertilized today and yesterday with Natures Source plant food to provide N for the seeds. Otherwise just pHed water.
Sep 8: only 2 C last night for the second time this fall.
Had the plants on the warming table which is better than bringing them in the house. If it is forecast to be below zero while plants are still going I will bring them in the house overnight. Anyway they seem fine this morning and I gave them a bit of warmed (20 C) and pHed water to help wake up after the cold night.
Sep 11: dried weight of main harvest and testers is 81 g. Buds taken from stems and jarred for curing. Seeds are almost ready but need a bit more time. Weather has been good the last three days and the popcorn buds are making good progress.
A seeded bud was looking potentially mouldy so I harvested the seeds. Lots in a small bit of flower. 😎 Maybe not fully matured so I’ll leave the others going for a few more days.
Sep 17: still going with popcorn buds and seeded branches. Seeds are almost ready, and these buds are getting to be quite sticky and resinous. 🤠. Have harvested 30 g wet so far while retrieving seeds.
Sep 18: hazy here in Alberta from CA and OR wildfires. 1,800 km away but the smoke is blocking UV light which means the THC production will be lower...an unexpected consequence of global warming. Growing cannabis outdoors in Canada is due to plant breeding and not warming.
Sep 21: have been taking seeds off daily to get a feel for how they are maturing. Took off 267 grade a and 117 grade b seeds of Devil XXL. Also got another 40+ seeds from Devil XXL pollen on a small branch of a friend’s Original Jack Herer from Fast Buds. Those should be quite similar seeds and it will be interesting next year to see how they differ.
This is a great plant and I love the Jack Herer influence. This is complicated but I bought these seeds from Original Sensible Seeds who describe it as a cross of Devil with an auto Jack Herer. Listed here as Homegrown because Devil XXL is not listed under Sensible on Growdiaries but I suspect it’s originally bred by Sweet Seeds.
Nice strong daytime smoke and the buds are quite resinous. The plant was always big and robust and had no problems at all. Excellent plant, yield, and smoke.
Great plant and highly recommended.
The final weight is a bit of an estimate because I was harvesting seeds over the two weeks since the main harvest, but it’s a pretty reliable number. Without pollinating some branches this likely would have produced about 150 g. Nice big yield for an auto.
I’ll grow this again next year, but starting a few weeks earlier and topped instead of fimmed. This was an organic grow (vinegar for pH adjustment, molasses as a bloom booster, dolomite lime and Epsom salts in the soil for cal-mag) and I’m not sure what else it would take to push the yield into the claimed 300 g range but it’s possible.
Made bubble hash from 2020 scraps to end of September using dry ice and a freeze dryer. High grade was 45-90 microns and Full Spectrum was the rest (25 + 120-220 micron). Greenish tinge is due to the dry ice extracting plant material. Will try fresh frozen method on some of the Wonder Pie, Panama Lime and Cookies G13 to see if single strain cold water hash is better.
@Northern_Ent, She is flowering, i think it is not het. More about the stage she is i mean flowering she needs more potassium and phosphorus and so it is normal. No worries.
@Ferenc, thanks, but it’s looking pretty yellow tonight and so is my Gorilla Glue. I’m thinking it’s heat stress as it was 30C here today, but I’m open to any other suggestions.
What do you think about homegrown autos??? I bought 8 seeds from them (not doing a diary) and am a little pissed that at day 80 it’s finally flowering and the other was day 68...
@ChitownCannaChica, well, I got these seeds in bulk from Original Sensible Seeds, and the genetics are likely originally from Sweet Seeds...I just listed it as being from Homegrown for the diary. Either way, Devil XXL has been a great plant for me, but I can’t comment on them generally.
