each context should get its own considerations... how much new growth? Spirals vs fist-shaped buds? and similar thoughts. I'm not one to worry about a pretty shape, but each to their own. Spirals are bad, but can be snipped off into trim bin for concenrates.
i'd focus on the bulk of what i'm harvesting. Same reasons you try to scope more than just 1 cola or just the top area to check trichomes... try to get an average of the largest portions... or, possibly stagger a harvest in some instances...
heat, too much light, too little light.. all can cause fox-tailing from what i know as well as genetic predispositions to consider. if you think it was environmentally caused, try to fix that, otherwise focus on the bulk of what you consider good buds for harvest window and i think you'll do fine.
