Fed up with the way things are going with my Malawis (see my other journal on GD), I am sowing some more seeds in an ultimate attempt to fill my tent.
I will vedge them for as long as needed to get 4-5 footers.
Those will be grown in Stepwell SSW organic living soil.
Little update both seeds got the taproot out after 30hrs under heat mat. Sprouts are breaking soil today!
Both plants are looking happy. This is 9 days from seeds. I am trying to stay positive and hopefull for these girls. I installed them in a grow cabinet I have build in a closet. I changed my mind and will be using organic living soil for them as well.
Things are coming along nicely. Both plants shows signs of magnesium deficiencies so the bale of soil got conditioned with Epsom salts. Light has been dimmed lower and raised higher to reduce stress to the plants.
Plants have doubled in size since last week. Just added a small fan as they are now stretching. I do not plan to top them. Both are growing at same paste since start. They should start to look like sativas real soon and it WILL BE a jungle this time!!
I know: I said I was not gonna top them.. well only fools don't change their mind! They ARE growing like crazy and would have been a waste of good potential bud spot to have let them grow wild has planned. So I am flipping tonight as I am going to transplant them later in 15gal fabric pot and move them with my other Malawis in flower. Flower tent is now powered with a 600w Hps so I will add the 3000K 240QB light in the tent.
One week from flip! I am a little dissapointed on the stretching so far. I think the breeder is overrating their genetic potential on this and if you read this and want some 5 footers beasts, you will need to vedge for 8 weeks, prune and lst the plant. Just like most hybrid. Do not be scared to let it grow a bit!!
I think i see pre-flowers on the Killer A5 and I think I've got the NL-A5 pheno. Next week will be crucial and I hope they explode like crazy.
Both plants are happy and looking promising. They both have very little sativa expression so far. I can now confirm that Malawis are not mad stretchers and they double to triple in size after switch.
Both plants are now blooming and are just under 3ft high. The Killer A5 have a lot of nice bud spots and might be chunky. This Malawi looks like it have some indica in it. Flowers seems to sets quickly on both but the A5 should finish before.
These plants are thriving and budding like champions! Only thing missing for a home run is some therpenes to start kikiing in! They are also faster than expected but I know I still have a long road to go.
Soil was top dressed and soaked 5 days ago, after final defoliation. Killer A5 Haze got staked. Both plants are about the same size and are budding at about the same paste. The Killer A5 will be a huge yielder but a bit leafy. The Malawi shows a nice compact structure with medium inter node length. Again, looking a bit leafy.
Just watering those girls once in while, opening the tent to say hi and watch them change and flower. They look killer. Malawi is showing some brown pistil here and there could not take a decent picture to show you... nothing to worry about as pheno 1 did same thing in previous run. Beside that the A5 is getting chunky.
Lots of things are going on. At least. enough for an update! Malawi Have started to push more and more brown pistil. Also this strain grows straight out milky trichomes. I got worry to the point I had to contact the breeder. Guess what next and following mornings the plant started to push out brand new calyx and the brown pistils soon enough got buried to the point I don't see them anymore! flowers now looks pretty close to what I see on ACE site. And the smell. Oh dear Lord have mercy! I have positive pressure in my tent but negative pressure in the room where the ten is. Consequence: I smell a deep nutty and grape aroma all up in the air. Malawi: The smell is unique and beyond! When rubbed the stem gives a strong amonia fruity incensed with hint of pine smell! woaw!! The smell itself is addictive and promising. Never smell something like it before. The Killer A5: probably the Haze dominent pheno. Why? because of cola structure, smell, and flowering time. The plant produces long and thin bud covered branches but that will not turn into cola 'soda can wide'. The smell is classic but rich and deep lemony haze with a touch of cream. Day 49 from flip and looks about half way there. Malawi looks closer.
Both plants are flowering on a slow paste. In 4 days I will be 2 months from flip. Killer A5 is AT LEAST! 4 weeks away, Malawi might be around 3. Not a lot is happening except for the effects from the calcium deficiency that really came to their peak since last post. Looks under control now. Will keep feeding at half strength for next few shots. I also dimmed the QB and raised the hps.
**week update**
The Killer A5 (phenotype I have?) is one of those plants that mature from the bottom. I've found some brown pistil in the bottom of plant on rare larf buds. It shows me that the plant is not going to fatten up much more. Even if I am looking (again) at way much more buds than I can ever smoke before I get fed up, gotta look at reality and say this is it. So Killer A5 is going into maturity phase, joining the Malawi.
This Thuesday was 2 months from flip. This is day 63.
Plant have been rotated so they can ripen more evenly. Malawi got staked proprely. These 2 plants are finishing in beauty!
The Malawi is slowly getting ready I would say about 2 weeks. The smell is just delicious and very complex, addictive and narcotic. The trichome and resin production is also on top! The buds are getting fuller, but won't get rock hard.
Killer A5 is also looking fantastic and the pure haze smell with a hint of Tiger Balm and oil is even more incredible! I hope it will mature in a way to make those calyx come out because at the moment they are small and buried in leaves-hair. Not a lot of trichomes and resin so far, but, In ACE we thrust! A few weeks left for her.
One week closer to taste these beautiful flowers! The Killer A5 is getting frosty and shows some swelling. Finally! but still a few weeks to go. Malawi have completely reflower for a third time in a foxtail pattern.
I might chop a sample of Malawi to have something special for NY. Wishing a merry Christmas to everyone!
This will be last journal entry for Malawi. Since I started on a Monday this journal and got behind a few days every week this is officially week 16. FRIDAY = CHOP DAY.
Killer A5 haze is getting seriously chunky. Wish I did not burn her sugar leaves out of a Calcium deficiency. I am keeping her a little longer.
Malawi have a lot to offer. This plant is not the same phenotype has the other I have grown. I can tell from the smell. I am drying this plant and will update a full smoke report.
I have been smoking Malawi for a few days and feel like it is time to update
Malawi is the strongest weed I have ever smoke. I live in Canada; the only country it is fully legal to produce distribute and use re-creative cannabis. Multi million dollar company fighting against each other in pheno hunt and breeders associations. This strain stands out.
Malawi have a very fast and strong onset. High slams the forehead with a wave of heat from the very firsts hits. Eyes becomes heavy. As you smoke it inhalations are like a jab you receive and leaving you in a state of semi consciousnesses as what the fuck is going on??! From first till last hit. This weed is very strong, hallucinogenic. This drug is vey disruptiv. Mind is getting disconnected from body like a different entity from body. Vision is distored a bit, and it is definitely more on the couch lock category because of it's potency and effects. But forget about following a movie!! It is still very nice to smoke and perfect for week end or after work. Taste turned Tropical fruity, Nutty, hint of Vanilla and Pine.
Yield was medium. Quarter pound total of dried bud for a 2x2 plant meaning potebtially a pound for a 4x4, under 1000w.
Malawi from ACE is well suited for indoor growing and do not require special treatment compare to most hybrid. Stretch was about 3 times after flip and extra ligh beyond 100,000 lux or 50w sq. ft of good light will stunt the plant, require CO2 supplemet and cause foxtailing.
This phenotype is identical to many pictures showed by ACE. ACE was also fast responding on inquiries e-mail I sent them. For all these reason I am forgiving them for over rating their strain on lightening needs, space and flower time. It was a charm to grow this plant flowered at 12in. ended at 35in. and stayed compact perfect size 2x2 plant. It requires some staking and loves Mag in vegetation, Calcium in flower.
Been very busy and skipped a week. Here is a quick update for week 18. Finishing it under metal halide lamp as Subcool suggest to increase terpenes. Light schedule is also reduced to 9 -15.
Sunday = Chop day !!
Full smoke report will be done after drying. Finger hash did bring me into deep space. Should be fantastic and super strong.

Full smoke report
*********************************************
I have been smoking Killer A5 Haze for quite some time now, and experienced it in every occasion. Phenotype grown here has a lot of Haze A influence. It shows in effects, taste and look. Not a bad thing!! Let's talk a little more about those 3 things.
EFFECTS: High is clean. Not what I expected, but what I needed in my pantry. Perfect for morning smoke with just enough kick and sativa head rush to make a magic start every morning. Not heavy (for me) but still some high thc stuff. It gives that little electric buzz but leaves a positive open mind offset. No couch lock. It is also great for end of day energy boost and stress releaf smoke. Gives a nice mood enhancer with almost zero crash and no paranoia. One of the most enjoyable and well suited for me strain I have ever smoke.
TASTE: The taste is pure haze with the nutty touch found in Malawi 1. It is very pleasant, rich, woody, nutty and lemony. It is smooth but full of aromas that can be tasted till the end of the joint.
LOOK: Buds grown in elongated colas with classic haze leafy bud structure. Small trichomes, sugar leaves pattern around calyxes and fluffy not dense flowers. To the touch you can feel the resin and oil when you crumble it. The heavy resin content makes it easy to roll nice fat joints.
Killer A5 Haze was the most expensive seed I've ever bought. The result is a spectacular haze dominant plant with the smell I was dreaming off. Buds are not the prettiest. Looking at colas their was a lot of leaf matter, despite a few defoliation while flowering. At chop day, I was not impress on overall look of bud and I was even worried about potency.
When I started removing these leaves it did not took long for my fingers to be covered of Charas!! 2 snakes of it were than rolled with some Malawi and the result was something out of this world!! No more worry about potency!!!! Once those big leaves removed, the flower look way better despite a leafy structure. Old school sativa looking.
Full trimming was done on plant, then it was cut at base and hung to dry. First time I trimmed like that and will keep doing it this way.
Growing ACE Killer A5 Haze was hard in the way it need strong feeding, good staking, and over 90 of flower to finish. Total yield for a medium small size plant ( 2x2 feet wide, 3 feet high with) was about 5 ounce, making it close to a High Yield score
Mate they look awesome.Great genetics! Do you still think your A5 is a NL dominant pheno? It looks very sativa in flowering.Expect some very hard, compact buds from it.It looks that way to me.Looking great!!
Gotta sayi t's hard to tell. Plant was defoliated and striped of big fan leaves at flip and 5 days ago. Sometimes leaves grown in flower stay narrower than older ones from late vedge (??).
I agree: nice genetic! She will be a beauty queen!
Thank you for your kind words!
They are looking great, I have also been surprised with the lack of stretch with some of the landrace style sativas. Panama didn’t stretch much either. My Grinspoon was the biggest stretcher so far and likely will stop at about 4 1/2 feet. (Topped twice)
You seem to have topped A5 at 4th node if I'm not wrong and it had quite long internode distance in veg.Isn't it marvelous how these plants at least triple in size in flowering? Mine has already 6 nodes at week 4,gonna top it in a couple of days.Side branches getting bolder every day. What is your yield expectation on your Killer A5 Haze? It'll give you 100+ easily,I guess.
@sativaman, my god! I thought we talked today but it says you replied 1 day ago! im non stop high I think but can't feel that ??!! sorry for late reply.
yeah I'm actually happy with my A5,others are doing great too.My pheno looks to be really sativa, very thin leaves as yet. haze dominant or silverish malawi might be.I'm thinking about switching to flower next thursday.
@sativaman,definitely,this is what I'm experiencing since I started growing with a hps lamp all the way through.longer plants with lots of open space between branches.only 1 topping and some lst and these plants reach the climax. It becomes harder to do lst on them when internodal distance is shorter, just like Congo which has tighter structure.First top, then lst when other branches get long enough to bend, then a few hst's after switching.
@HighRoller909, smell is very addictive! Their is a lot going on when you take a deep breath. Nothing close to any other strain. Smells like medicine, pine, varsol paint thinner, maturing to a tropical sweet note. You get spicy tone with decombosed matters.
On the other hand it's very manageable my tent have positive pressure and very light nutty smell in the room.
@Oldbay, Days in the sun ..lucky to you!!! here it's winter coming. Well if you grow them outside you might get the best out of them with long 2 months of summer vegetation! Those Malawis seems pretty legit as far of potency. I have 2 already 7 weeks in and they smells like crazy good stuff. Larger one have hearty, fuel, and mint aromas. Then other one smells sweet and lemony.
Best of luck on your pheno and happy season!
Looking for full smoke review, it looks really fantastic after live trimming and it is a great yielder as well, can't believe how it turned out after vegetation phase! Always gotta love scissor or finger hash. Never disappoints :)
@sativaman, hahah I believe. You don't know what I did... Few days ago while harvesting that automatic girl scout cookies, I noticed one of the Golden Tiger's bottom, tiny side branch from a main branch was bent over.Instead of fixing it,I cut it down and hung for 3 days. There was no callyxes on it,only some sugar leaves with trichomes and very very early calyx formation. 0.04gr total. It was dope!!! Drove me into very warm and dreamy place. No joke, it really did. No placebo because that auto is very weak and turned out disappointing,I was able to feel the difference. The small sample of GT was much better than it! AND THE GOLDEN TIGER HAS 7 WEEKS MORE to harvest!!! I can't imagine what GT and A5 could be in the end.
@Grey_Wolf, I am an hardcore cannabis lover. I live in Canada. Here it is fully legal. This means multi million $ company push out nerw strains, with a lot of money spent in research and development aka pheno hunt, some Licensed Producers even gets elite clone straight from breeders. ACE's Malawi is one of those strain that not only compete with the most exotic and expensive stock available in term of potency but it's effects put them in back! You can google SQDC cannabis: this is the government own store that sells weed!
It is good to see Killer A5 Haze is starting to flower only after 2 weeks into flowering.I have one running at the moment at day 10,it grows really fast and vigorous as yet.
@sativaman, Yes I read about it on their website, out of 4 yours seem to be more indica containing phenotype indeed but at least,it's gonna finish up quick.I wanted to grow a red pheno of Panama but I got the green one, totally depends on the packager guy's aura that day :) It will be a great one at the end I'm sure about it whether it is NL or Haze dominant.I hope I have silverish malawi pheno but can't say anything yet.But it grows really fast that's all I can say,for a 9 days old seedling. My diaries always come a couple of weeks later than actual position, you can expect a new diary in 2 or 3 weeks. But I have another sativa that grows waaay faster than my killer a5, from ACE. Golden Tiger!! You'll be informed automatically when I put in a diary :)
@HighRoller909, Well yes but I wish I had an other phenotype. Have you took a moment to read pheno description on ACE website? The NL-Haze pheno was the least interesting for me. But I like the way it grows too let's just hope it still makes some exquisite flowers. Might grow again. Don't you monitor your growth in a journal this time too?
Hi - what are in the organic living soil? Looks a bit wet. Pure Sativa‘s are Usually from drier area. And their root does better with drier soil. There is still time.
And I am with you on longer veg.
For bugs, I use microbes. My first choice is Beauvaria bassiana but I rotate a couple others into my spray every so often.
Happy growing
@sativaman, Beauvaria is curative. They don’t last long above ground. And it is sprayed.
Anti-mold trichoderma is preventive. Again the don’t last long either.
Good luck.
@Med_in_Tropic, the Organic living soil is made with peat moss, mycorrhizae fongus, worm casting bone meal, blood meal, fish bone meal, alfalfa meal, wollastonite and rock dust, humic acid, lime and perlite.
Each plant also received about 300ml extra of top dress and tea since fower. Top dress mix contains Bone meal, kelp meal, fish bone meal, blood meal, mineralized phosphate, rock phosphate, mined potassium sulfate, glacial rock dust, humic acid, gypsum dust.
Thank you for your input about watering! Those are 15gal (around 60 litres) and they receive about 2gal of collected rain water every 5-6 days. This is my first time in soil so I am all ears to your advices. I grow usually in coco coir with mandatory 20% runoff everyday. I have been told to drench soil until I am just about to see any runoff. Does this sounds right to you?
Because of fungus gnats I was trying to soak soil once a week to have the top 2-3 inches dry for at least half of the time. I did not know about sativas enjoying some draught and it does make a lot of sense as Malawi have a rain and a dry season.
Beauvaria bassiania.. very nice I have just learned something new today! I made a quick search and I looks pretty solid. Would you say that those are more preventive or curative? I have a local company who make some: Anatis Biopretection. If I knew better I would already have those in my soil. Next run will be. My nematodes are on the way so if they do not take care of the problem I'll get the beauvaria, and try to top dress.
Thank you again and have a great day!
Bonjour Merci beaucoup pour votre journal votre travail me laisse sans voix c'est magnifique de voir un passionné de sativa comme vous. Vos info sont precise et clair ne changez rien japprend beaucoup de votre travail. A bientôt
@Greenislandfr, Thank you for loving Sativas!! One of the reasons I love it here is because we can share and see how a specific strain behave under documented environment. I am learning a lot myself on GD! I will take a look at your work and see what's in your garden! Cheers from Canada!
@xanado18, The smell ..mmmh! first word comes in mind is addictive! then I would say complex and nothing close to any other strain. Do you know what Tiger Balm is? (It is a Thai medecine balm sold in a little metal canister that fits in your hand)Smells like Tiger balm, pine and varsol paint thinner, maturing to a tropical sweet note.
Looking great. I don't know why your replies don't come up as a notification, just saw your question.Yes, yesterday I flipped. Under 11/13,I'm expecting to see the first preflowers in a week as they all showed female signs in the last week of veg, they are mature enough.Diary in a couple of days.
I’m growing a out AJs African haze, which is very similar to the Malawi and I’m sure shares some aspect of the same lineage. I’ll be following along and watching your plants stretch out 😎 love a good sativa tent!!
