Placed 1 seed in a glass jar of water (didnt take pH) and let sit for 18-24 hours. At 18 hours I pushed it down into the water because I saw that it was still floating. It sank very easily so I figured it was good to go. I then placed the seed inside of 2 paper towels and folded them up nicely while making sure the towel was damp but not completely soaked. (You dont want this to dry out but you also dont want this to be dripping wet). I even gave it a few sprays of water (not pH'd) and then placed it inside of a ziploc bag but left it open so that oxygen could still come in and out. I then left it in a dark cabinet for 36 hours. The temp was 72-75degrees in the cabinet and 58% humidity (but this shouldnt have mattered to much due to the fact the seed is covered in wet paper towels). After 36 hours I checked and a 1/2" tap root was showing so I decided it was time to plant the seed in my **BUFFERED MEDIUM (with 5.5pH - Coco+Perlite)**. I planted the seeds no more then 1/4" into the medium and lightly placed the medium over it but very gently. I then put the bottom of a water bottle (with a few holes) over the seed to serve as a humidity dome. The tent has a sustained temp of 72-77F & 60-65% RH.
Starting out the week - I am noticing some deficiencies on my plant. I am hoping that feeding them week 1 of veg cycle will fix this for me. I am going to continue feeding as normal and see how the plants react.
UPDATE 11/7 11pm:
I think I was wrong for continuing feedings. I think my problem was that I was over watering and developed a potential phosphorus deficiency judging by what I see on the leaves. The new growth is looking better and nice and green and starting to pick up some speed so I think this may be the answer to the problem.
These plants are definitely stunted but I am going to continue with them and see what I might be able to do to revive them or know for next time.
I have not fed the plants in quite a while. I am just trying to maintain perfect conditions and good airflow so nothing sits. This is the plan until further notice.
11/8 - Haven't watered - plan was to try to dry the soil out. I understand now why they say to pick up the pots because I didnt do that, I dug into the pot and I broke 1-3 of the plants roots. I dont think it will be a huge problem but I am not going to put my hands into the soil ever again. From what I felt - the soil still felt moist about 2 inches down. So I am going to keep letting the soil dry and see how the girl looks. On the new growth I saw a black dot that I hope doesnt spread. I believe it is a Calcium deficiency so maybe it needs a watering but like i said I want to stick to my guns and wait a little before watering. Maybe 1 day 2 tops. At that point I am planning on going with 50-100ML of water a day max. We will see what happens. As for now - just waiting for soil to dry and observing how the plant is looking
1/9 - Feeling pretty light (the pot) - but still going against my better judgement and I am going to let it dry down some more. The plant seems to have not developed more deficiencies other than a 2 black spots on the new growth so I think this is a good sign that what I am doing is working.
11/11- Pot seems to still have some weight to it so not going to water. New black spots are showing on the plant not sure what it is going to push throguh it though
Raised light to 36 inches - getting back to a regular feeding schedule. Now at about 120ML every 24 hours. But steadily raising up 20-30ML a feeding until I hit 1 Gallon a feeding. Also added in a co2 enhancer that I made myself.
Looking like its reviving a little bit ... Good to see... Just now am I trying to LST the plant and expose more of the bud sites well see what happens
16,800 LUX ~ 267 ppfd ... (some dude on youtube recommended 400-600 but I dont think my plants liked it when i did that.... she looks like shes loving the environment now so ill keep it here for now maybe looking to move up in power soon though. i have a marshydro tsw2000 @ 60%
12/2 4am - Still pretty heavy after feeding on 11/29 ... i might pull back to 4 cups because i dont think its good for my plants to sit with that solution for that long. ideally i saw that you should aim to feed the plants every day or every other day so if they cant drink that quickly maybe you should pull back... idk though .. i suck at this
12/3 - 1159pm - fed 6 cups anyway lets see how they react. 72 degrees. 409 ppm. 5.6ph . wk 5 solution
Week 6: 12/6-12/13
i tihnk its flowering
12/8 - prob not the best idea but i cut off a ton of fan leaves lol... they were all deficient in something so i figured why not just try it out and cut them all to see what happens... i know what will happen if i dont (theyll stay) so lets see how it affects the plant. I believe she should be total fine and maybe produce better buds ? idk - also starting to smell a tiny bit
Week 7 -12/14-12/20
12/14 2am - still growing well ever since i fixed it but when I pH tested the runoff after a 8 cup feeding last night it was around 6.2 pH so even though thats fine I am going to try to lower it to close to 5.8 bc that is the money zone.. I believe pH is a reason why I am running into some deficiency issues but it is hard to tell for me.
12/15 3pm - im not sure if its a good idea or not but i keep defoliating during flower. i dont want to do any other LST or HST during flower but i believe keeping the light shining on bud spots is essential we shall see how the buds form in the up coming weeks
week 8 12/20-12/27
12/21 - kinda scared i been messing with them to much when they started flowering... i see the leaves growing back when i defoliate but i wonder if thats slowing down the bud growth??? .... so im gonna just leave them alone from now on and see if that is the problem. next time i want to grow them taller and then scrog. i definitely did a horrible job but whatever...
also
i havent strengthened the light from when i originally set it to so i think that might be slowing down buds but again i am going to just let it be and then next harvest i will kick up the lighting and see if that helps any
Week 10 - 1/3 -1/10
1/4 - update - not sure what to do next. my feeding schedule only has 10 weeks of feed so i might flush with water for last 2 weeks until it is ready to go?
**i think the deficiencies are either Maganese or something im not sure .... i think i should add some cal mag to my feed but i didnt want to go "rambo" mode just yet with this being my first grow i wanted to stick to the gameplan. going forward i might cowboy up a little more because i didnt realize that the food chart was more of a guide and then depending on what the plant tells you - you adjust appropriately... but whatever live and learn .
PPMS havent really gone over 500 during the whole grow either so i think i got some room to work with.... people said they use 3ML of CalMag the entire flower stage. flower ppm should be 1000 and veg between 600 and 800 .... ill try that moving forward
week 11 : 1/10-1/17 *flush*
Feeding only went to 10 weeks.. So I am planning on flushing for 2 more. Straight water. See what happens.
Concluding the grow a few things I know I could have improved on was I think I let the medium dry or overwatered at times which fucked up the ph ... So maybe sticking with 1/2-3/4 gallon feeds (in 3 gallon pot) would have been more beneficial instead of dumping in somuch water and getting 30-40% run off... Also I stuck to the plan for the feeds and didnt question them which may have been bad for me but who knows... Next time I will do 3ML of Cal mag during the entire flowering weeks or atleast more than i did. I did add 3 ML of calmag at the end on 1/7 but i dont think it was good enough timing to help out.
plant probably sucked cuz i suck... it didnt help having someone ruin my plants while i was on vacation ... next time more cal mag in the end ... and ill feed her better. oh well
i suck at growing and this shows but i will be better... i think i harvested a little early but its hard to say because its an auto and should be done by now so i figured i will do my best with it and try my best with the last weeks of the other girls that were 3 weeks behind
@Ferenc, Thanks! I really hope she heals up nicely - I know she is stunted a little bit but hopefully I will be able to get past it so I can know for next time what works and doesnt and in turn whoever looks at this will be able to gain that experience as well.
@HiGHLYDiGESTiBLE
South Park rules)))) for me substrates are very difficult. I do not use branded fertilizers and therefore constantly get problems with the soil or coco. you can simply replace the solution from the DVC in case of problems. and the substrate needs to be washed, which in my experience is equal to a new grow
@ArthurStotch, 1. I love the south park-esque name lmaoooo so fire..... 2. I am trying to look up substrates but no definition gives me a good understanding of what you mean. Are you refering to the chemical nutes I use or the medium?
The thing about coco/perlite is that it drains really well, so its near impossible to drown anything in it. The first time I grew in coco, i didnt know this and chronically underwatered. definitely do not be afraid to water, and don't let the top 2 inches get dry.
What was the source of your coco? was it bag or brick? did you buffer? this looks like it could be lockout from unwashed coco.
If things don't turn around in the next few days, I would restart the grow. Don't get discouraged. CocoForCannabis is a great online resource for this stuff.
@ThePotanist, Thanks for commenting !
It was Mothers Earth coco/perlite 70/30 mix - should be prewashed prebuffered but i buffered 2x anyways. with calmag for 8hours a piece. im not exactly sure how i should be watering it so i think i completely ruined it. i think i know what to do this time though. i am going to start a new grow in the next 2 days
