This is my second attempt at growing this strain. The first time I got a mutant and lost a week of veg due to some complications. In spite of that, it turned out to be a decent plant and I got to try it out - and my goodness it's a wonderful sativa dominant strain. I was so sad when I finished the jar! Hoping to get a much bigger harvest this time around!
I'll be growing this outdoors in the middle of summer, harvesting early autumn. I soaked the seed in reverse osmosis water and in 24 hours the seed had cracked with a tap root peeking out. I transferred to paper towel for another 24 hours, then into a jiffy pellet. Once I transferred to the pellet, I immediatley watered lightly with trichoderma (beneficial fungus). I've lost seedlings in the past to damping off, and the trichoderma helps innoculate against that. The next day a healthy little seedling shot out!
I'm starting these indoors under 24hr CFL lighting for the first week or so, before transplanting outdoors.
Follow along and we'll see how she does :)
The girls have had a good week! After exploding out of their jiffy pellets, it took no time at all for the tap roots to start peeping out of the base of the pellets. The moment I see that I transfer them to a bigger pot, adding mycorrhizae and again watering with trichoderma. Happy roots, happy plant right?
2 of the girls (the Daiquiri Lime and the Glue Gelato) are showing weird leaf warping/curling. I'm definitely not overwatering so I'm not sure what that is about. The CFL's don't generate too much heat so I don't think it's heat related either. It could be my medium, its re-used organic living soil.
Anyway, happy where they are at by day 7. See you next week!
**Please note that I sometimes share pics and comments from my concurrent diaries**
-----------------------------------
The girls took a walk outside this week, and decided to stay.
It was overcast and a bit cooler, so it was a great time to transplant. I hardened them off over about 2 days, giving them morning sun and bringing them back indoors in the afternoon when it gets hotter. When I transplanted, I again added mycorrhizae in the planting hole and watered with trichoderma fungus. I'm growing in used organic living soil so I'm trying to innoculate all the medium I use - especially in these early stages. With the intense heat that kind of springs out at you here, I'm going to feed a few times along the grow with silicon plus, a product that helps prevent environmental stress and helps recovery if it happens. This is a great product for outdoor growers, because together with trichoderma, it can help against stuff like powdery mildew as well. Gotta fight that one proactively! If you're feeding with a silicon product, it helps to add that to your water first, then your other nutrients. If you add all the nutes first, they coagulate and make it difficult to stir together.
Gave them their first feeds, using Biobizz again alongside other organic nutrients. Feeding microbes once a week. Great to see that the weird leaf warping/curling only affected the first leaves of the Glue Gelato and Daiquiri Lime. They are good to go!
I planted some red clover for a living mulch. Clover is also nitrogen fixing to an extent, but I believe that is only truly beneficial when the plant is decomposing. Also - it takes available nitrogen from the soil if it is present first, before adding it back in - so I wouldn't rely on these as a nitrogen solution as companion plants. They're pretty and they will prevent my soil surface from drying out, that's my main reasons. They will however probably benefit the next grow, since the dead clover will be worked back into the soil adding some organic matter - like a green manure.
For the chilli heads, I've had some great harvests on some phenomenal peppers (see images for names of varieties) . My garden is a colourful, fiery playground right now! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The weather is still a bit topsy turvy this week. Rain the one day, sunny and hot the next. Fortunately they're still in veg, so it's not too much of a problem. Insane winds started at the end of the week, so bad that I had to bring them in under cover.
I snipped the bottom most set of leaves. These will more than likely become larf later, so hopefully she'll divert that energy elsewhere now. The red clover is starting to sprout niclely.
I think these are doing quite well at this point. Had some lovely pepper harvests this week, too! 🔥🔥🔥
Catch you next week :)
The 3 girls are starting to show the first sets of pistils, starting with the Bubblegum, followed by Daiquiri Lime. The Glue Gelato hasn't shown signs this week but we should see it start by next week. I'm in no rush, always happy to get extra veg time in with autos!
I'm quite happy with all of their sizes at this stage, should see them become monsters by the end of their stretch! End of summer doesn't seem like a bad time to grow, but the main concern is wild males in the area pollinating my beauties. Also hoping they will have enough light by the end of flower, as we are starting to see daylight hours diminishing.
See you all next week as we head into flower 🌼✌️
The girls have all officially kicked into flowering, the auto bubblegum from Fast Buds is definitely the most eager out of all of them, but this daiquiri lime is growing just great too! This is already a much better grow so far than the first one I grew - it had a mutation and resulted in a small yield.
It's been a good week of harvesting super hot peppers as well!
It's the second week of flower and this daiquiri lime is taking off! The last time I grew this, I had a mutant and it almost died, and I lost a lot of veg time. In spite of its rough start I still ended up with a great smoke, so I'm stoked that she's already way ahead of my first attempt and looking like a major improvement. Yass!
It's so interesting growing 3 different strains from 3 different breeders simultaneously and seeing how unique each one is. They were all started at the exact same time and they are all performing well in their own ways. They're all at around 90cm in height which is a great height for early flower, should see these shoot to over 1m each.
Had a baby blue headed lizard come to visit 🦎
See you on the next update :)
All the girls breached 1m this week and looking strong!
The daiquiri lime is filling out nicely and stabilising to her final size as the buds start to form and mature. I gave another dose of trichoderma and silicon - the weather is warm now, but since shorter daylight hours and cooler temperatures are coming, I need to try protect the girls from mold.
I'm writing in retrospect, playing a bit of catchup here. These plants are unfortunately in for some turbulence, but I won't spoil the story...
After growing out a mutant of this strain previously, I'm super stoked at how this one is growing true to form. She's starting to really get those pistils out and the smell is starting to emerge. This one oozes with citrus notes and I cannot wait to have a full jar of this again. One of my favourite strains to date. 🍋
Let's hope I can see her to the end...
It's the time of the grow I have feared the most, late flowering as we hit mid Autumn. Daylight is shortening, nights are getting cooler - setting the stage for powdery mildew.
I've noticed some PM starting on the lower leaves of the glue gelato. The other 2 are okay for now but as a precaution I've sprayed all of the plants with an organic fungicide (ascorbic acid based, which happens to also be a good finishing nute for buds so I hear). I only sprayed the fan leaves of the bubblegum since she's getting close to finishing and there's no signs of mold at this stage.
I'm getting nervous, since the glue gelato has a long way to go and has so much foliage around the buds.
Wish me luck...
Seeing some great bud production this week. The smells coming from this plant are fantastic, but as I feared - mildew is making an appearance.
I sprayed with an organic fungicide (ascorbic acid based) and that will hopefully stop the spread. I hate that I have to deal with this so often, it's a real downer to growing outdoors. You can get everything so right but then at the last minute nature says "LOL BRU GET REKT"
This is one of my favourite strains, it will be a real bummer if this plant goes to waste. Going to fight this mildew!
Wish me luck...
It was a challenging week for my daiquiri lime.
Mildew was at an all time high, and my go-to organic fungicide by Margaret Roberts, which usually keeps it at bay, just wasn't keeping up with the spread. She wasn't as badly affected as the glue gelato, but still battled.
At this point I was open to options and decided to spray with milk/water (1:4). It destroys the mildew for real, but I was concerned about leaving it on the plant being so close to finishing, so after about 2 hours I rinsed the milk off with a bicarb/water spray (2tsp to 1L) and it seemed to to a good job of rinsing the foliage and buds.
Friends.... 2 tsp of bicarb in a litre turned out to be far too much. I fried a lot of the foliage, as well as the pistils on the buds. Gutted to see them take a knock like that. But as crap a mistake as this was, it did seem to take care of the mildew. 1 tsp or less of bicarb per litre is probably the right amount.
Wishing you all a mold free week ✌️
It's the final week before I harvest. The mildew has stayed away, but I think I should quit while I'm ahead here.
Trichomes are looking nice and cloudy, happy to pull the plug at this point.
Harvested a nice bunch of dorset naga chilli peppers 🌶️ . These are one of my favourite super hots, they are loaded with flavour , but they are extremely hot and clock in at at 1-1.5 million scoville heat units 🔥
My daiquiri lime must have been in too close proximity to the peppers during the grow. As you can see, there was some cross pollination.
See you at harvest week :)
One of my favourite sativa dominant strains, this being my second time growing it. It's a pleasure to grow, yields well and is a great daytime smoke but I also enjoy this in the evenings. Delicious citrus notes with a sour, tangy after taste.
Hey friends! This grow too me a while to finish documenting, sorry for being off the grid for so long, but there's been a lot going on.
The Covid lockdown has been a lot to endure. To top that off, my province - the home of Durban poison, has been shocked to it's core with looting and violence. Communities have banded together as brothers and sisters to not only ward off criminals, but to help and care for each other and rebuild what others have destroyed. Schools, infrastructure, shopping malls, food supply chains have all been a target of arson, looting and vandalism. It's an interesting time to be alive in South Africa, but the ubuntu spirit is strong and we will emerge stronger than ever!
We are experiencing tough laws on booze, with sales currently being outright banned and have been for some time. I could really do with a beer, but I have to smile when I think about the fact that I can legally grow and smoke copious amounts of ganja :) Nothing wrong with that, ey?
Back to my harvest comment - this has to be one of my ultimate favourite strains. It grows well, yields well, tastes amazing and is loaded with THC. Even growing this outdoors, you'll get to experience how great this smoke tastes and hits. If any of you remember my Glue Gelato auto grow, that was going SUPER well, then got so riddled with every kind of mould and rot issue, that I had to turf the entire plant. I was devastated, never even got to taste it 😞
Do yourself a favour and try this strain, it's reliable and will possibly become your new favourite sativa. Thanks for following, fellow growers.
Peace ✌️
@Darkdarktime, hey there - it's a Magic-Flight Launch Box, one of the OG vaporizers. Handy little thing, gets some amazing hits if you know how! The silver thing is an unwrapped NiMH battery. By inserting it into the device it shorts out the mesh and delivers an impressive instant vape. I've had the thing for years. You can check them out at www.magic-flight.com
@SonomaSungrown, hey there. Yes my next week is a harvest week. I'll update this diary soon just been real busy. I find growing outdoors, the times they suggest are often more appropriate for indoors and take a bit longer for us, but I've had a few strains that were really fast outdoors - check out my Fast Buds Bubblegum diary I recently did, that was really quick!
@BioBuds, thanks - I've had good results from Dutch Passion's autos outdoors, check out my Think Different diary, I was able to cross the 100g mark - that was a wonderful sativa dominant smoke as well!
Epokwan good to see you on here again
The riots were mental bud, shit got real very quickly for us also
Happy to see you made it through and back in action
@Riveting, eish bro sounds like a story and a half! Also got caught off guard with supplies, had to queue at Checkers from 4am (needed baby supplies) and only got outta there about 1pm and once inside it was a mad show of panic buying inside...
We must be in the same province, stay safe buddy - I feel like everything is volatile at the moment.
@Epokwan, Yeah still feels like a movie set gone wrong
Flip it was hairy... We had to drive up to my farmer friends to go get meat/eggs/milk (with fuel I siphoned from a friends boat)
I was caught with my pants down on Monday (normal shopping day)
Great diary. I have one of these on the go but am a bit confused with it. Outdoor SW UK, 9ltr airpot in compost. May up to most of July have been below avg tmp and above avg rainfall. I germinated 28th March so now into 17th wk! 3rd wk of july was heatwave so let it carry on to give a last boost. Weather is now avg again but have had significant number of new pistiles appear. Triches are predominantly cloudy, only spotted 1 amber so far. I was gonna take down today but now think i should wait another week. I read there are phenos that take a bit longer but not this much. Would love to hear what others think. Cheers
@justabinky, the small pot and extreme defoliation may have stressed her out, autos can be super sensitive. Either way it sounds like you're close to getting high off your own supply. Nice to find another MFLB enthusiast! Most people who try it out don't like it because it doesn't seem to give off much vape, it takes practice to get big long warm draws, but once you get it right - oh man!
@Epokwan, thanks for the reply, it's pretty mad. During veg I did lst and at each node left only the side shoot that was growing in the direction i wanted. I have 5 colas, 1 is a bit smaller. Was quite brutal and defoliated all lower early in flower. My intention to keep small and discreet, the plant looks pretty nice, distorted twisted stem almost like a scaled up bonsai. I've been bringing indoors last week when it rains, had bad time with mould my last grow a few years back, I'm paying close attention and she looks in good shape despite being such a long finisher. I reckon I'll give her another 5-7 days, because the small pot may have stifled development really interested what yeild is, be happy whatever though, smells amazing, last few weeks. Thanks again for sharing your grow, and thoughts. Btw, big up the magic flight, all ive used since i gave up smoking almost 10 years ago
@justabinky, hey thanks for stopping by. 17 weeks seems way too long, even for outdoors. If there's no signs of mold or rot and she seems healthy enough, go ahead and push her a bit. Being sativa dominant, harvesting with less amber is also okay. Whatever you decide, it will be a great smoke. All the best for your harvest!
