Much the same as last week except more flowery. One exception: the Special Kush has a weird thing going on with her sugar leaves - it's not in the buds, it's not on the fan leaves, it's only the sugar leaves.

Grow Questions

Is that a male pre-flower on that 5th picture? You can see 2 nodes there, lower node and upper node. Upper node is showing female pre-flowers, but what is that wee thing on the right half of the lower node? It's the stalk-y thing that confuses me.

That looks like a male sack. Pluck it off, if more show up its over.

Should I defoliate that 8-top Critical (the bigger of the two plants in 9L pots)? I feel it's getting very bushy and leaves getting in the way of light for bud sites. How would you go about defoliating it?

Hi mate, I'd definitely defoliate. All you want to do is take off the fan leaves that are blocking the bud sites, a few at a time. You could do a couple today and then a couple more tomorrow so you don't stress your plant out too much. If you're stuck have a look at my diary (stardawg & girl scout cookies) You'll see how big she is just from me defoliating and some LST. You just want more light going through your plant, penetrating the canopy more. If you need to, just shoot me a message and I'll walk you through. Should be easy enough though. Hope this helps and good luck buddy!

What is going on with the Special Kush? Check out her sugar leaves - and it's only on them, it's not in the buds and it's not on the fan leaves. Deficiency? The other plants don't have it. Some kind of fungus? I removed all leaves that had it, and it returned on the other leaves.

When weird leaf symptoms appear the first suspect is wrong pH, and since you are not giving any info about measuring pH or adjusting, my guess would be some lockout due wrong pH. Second, you are not telling how often you are feeding, or what is the EC/PPM of your feeds; my second take is some kind of nutrient excess, I suspect minor potassium excess (toxicity) which in turn locks out many other elements. Try to flush and give just water for a week and tell us how it goes.

I *think* I got away with the light feck-up. They seem to be flowering normally as far as I can see.

@Jaindoh, cheers min, glad to hear it. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm certainly not keen to repeat the episode now and have a new rule: never leave the room with the tent open, even if it's just for a pee - so it's probably good that it happened when it happened as opposed to a later point in time.
Jaindoh

@Chamalla, I find that mostly as they enter the main flower phase after the stretch, and then ESPECIALLY later on in the flower, is when they get sensitive. To literally everything. This fact has saved me more than once XD
Chamalla
Chamallaweek 11
I so wanted to keep that plant, despite it having been only a bag seed ... my first cannabis plant :( and it turns out male. Crying!
Chamalla
Chamalla
@Jaindoh, I still have the other one (2 out of 5 bag seeds germinated), but it didn't seem as vigorous. Oh well. I've since learned that it was AK-47, so I guess I can always pick up the flavour again at some later time.
Jaindoh
Jaindoh
@Chamalla, Condolences. They're a lot more sensitive to light, but feminized seeds are all a lot of people use. Unsexed seeds are a nightmare. You still learned a lot, clearly -- and you'll take that moving forward. You didn't get a yield, but the skillset is the real reward.

So I pulled these three cuttings from my propagator today (see latest picture this week). Well, two cuttings (middle and right) and what remained of the Haze Express after repeated attempts of saving it. Now that I look at the hollowed out stem I reckon it took the gnat larvae with it into its new medium. Nae chance. Middle one is the first cutting I took, and as you can see it just rotted away instead of doing anything. Probably because there was no node underneath the soil surface. Right one is surprisingly the one that actually rooted - I just took that cutting for fun, it's from an auto, it never had a future as a separate plant ... but yes, two nodes in the soil, both developed healthy looking roots.

I'm liking this cloning thing, I really do - you get as many attempts as you can take cuttings from a plant. Whereas growing from seed can lead to so much heartache. :'( "Haze! Oh Haze! Why?!" and then the Gorilla Glue auto first germinating and *then* dying ... ugh.
Jaindoh
Jaindoh
@Chamalla, I am also working on my cloning success rate -- it's hit or miss for me, still, as well XD

They got really bushy this week somehow. Too much N? Gave all of them some defoliating, most of all the Special Kush again, and OH MY GOD MY FINGERS ARE STICKY AS F-...

@Chamalla, Perfect! =)

Had a look if they needed more defoliating, but it seemed mostly fine - I did some to the Special Kush (top right), who is shaping up to become a wee little frost nugget by the looks of it.
Chamalla
Chamallaweek 11
I've done some minor defoliation. At least I think it was minor (well, some plants got the knife a bit more than others). In some cases I left large bottom fan leaves on the plant where they didn't obstruct anything but were the last thing before the soil to get light. Also some fan leaves pointing outward and not obstructing anything either. But mostly I removed all fan leaves except the newest pair per top / growth tip.

Chamallaweek 11
In related news - good news for anyone who will ever have the misfortune of directing their gaze at the lousy pictures I take - I've moved the Letting Eyes Disintegrate light back to the small auto cabinet, as the LEC (or CMH or CDM ... the ceramic thingy) will get an amazing square reflector next week that *only* fits in the tent, so I need to swap the lights. Meaning the main grow tent will have the nicer to look at light. I've also realised that that lamp is a wee bit too hot for the small cabinet, so I'm inclined to keep running the Lightly Excruciating Demon of a grow light in there.

FlavoursUkweek 11
Just something i forgot to add in my solution to your problem, If you stand over the top of your plants as if you're where your grow light is you can see where the light is not getting through. Those are the fan leaves you want to get rid of. Take it easy ๐Ÿ˜€

Chamalla that's awesome that your trying out so many things....expect that baby to be one huge bush! I'm talking 70's porno bush! Excuse the crude reference. I can't wait to see how she turns out.
Chamalla
Chamalla
@Experimentgreen, Cheers, I'll try that. I've got 2 separate flower rooms now, I can put it in one all on its own by itself alone.
Experimentgreen

@Chamalla, Hey there, I know stress can cause some hermaphrodite situations, but if you have that plant isolated and can stay on top of the male flowers and pluck them off. You may be able to wind up with a small harvest that could easy be made into shatter etc. It may also put out a few seeds you could test out later.
Chamalla
Chamalla
@Experimentgreen, It may not come to that. I removed a male preflower from it today, it appears the stress I put it through was too much- not any one thing on its own but the combination of things. Shame about the big pot!
Stick
Stickweek 16
@Chamalla Hi there! This looks like a Phosphorous deficiency. You may have a nutrients-lockout in your soil preventing Phosphorous uptake. Overfeeding, overwatering, or wrong pH can result in nutrients-lockout. Do you check your pH? If you don't, I'd recommend to buy a pH-pen asap, they're affordable and this makes a real difference. I'll be around, keep us up-to-date, and happy growing! ๐Ÿ‘Š
Chamalla
Chamalla
@Stick, cheers! I'll check pH and give her a good flush. Will also remove the affected leaves and see what the rest look like after a week with water only.

First grows are exciting, but kind of scary! Liked and followed =) I'm a big fan of doing a lot of training techniques myself as well; the main thing that the guides might leave out: make sure that the plant is in the middle of a vegetative growth spurt -- instead of one of the precious early veg root spurts -- to make your tops and other stressful moves. Either way, you're doing very well so far! Eagerly anticipating the rest of your diary. Let us know if you have any questions!

@Jaindoh, Aha! It does make sense, but it's the first time I hear about that. Going to keep an eye on plant height / growth phase now for my next few attempts. Cheers!

Did you really "top" "fim" 8 times?! That's awesome. I want to try topping one of my girls multiple times just so I can experiment and see how much different it would turn out from the others, but I'm nervous to end up messing her up. Have you done that before? Multiple toppings?
Chamalla
Chamalla
@Experimentgreen, Nope, first grow for me - the point is to learn, so I try out as much as I can in what little time I have with them. The Critical was topped at node 3, then the 2 new tops topped again, and the 4 new ones a 3rd time, leaving me with 8 tops ... which I then FIMmed. :D Keen to see how that works out (if it works out).

That's some hard core bending there. I'd bet she survives fine. Its gonna be a stinky bonsai! ๐Ÿ˜€
Chamalla
Chamalla
@DudeGrowsWeed Oh aye. It will end up sort of cup shaped - up one side, back down to the centre, up another side, back down to the centre, and so on ... If I keep her she should give me plenty of cuttings.

That's the last of them in the dark for a few days, been flushing them for a week now. Next step is a slow dry on the vine, as it were.

I think I may put them all into flower now. and start a new grow in a month's time, to be flipped to 12/12 when they're harvested in ~2 months. I'll keep a razor sharp eye out for male flowers. And a razor.
