Rainwater pH?

blacklabel99
blacklabel99started grow question 4 years ago
Should I worry about rainwater throwing off the pH of my soil? The water that I give them is always pH'd to 6.3. Will the pH of the rainwater inhibit my plant's ability to take in nutrients. Rainwater is slightly Acidic from what I've read.

Hi there! I think that even tho the pH is slightly acidic it is still not very strong so even the smallest adjustments should change the pH pretty easily so I dont think it will have effect on your plants. Heavy rain will maybe flush some nutes from the soil but I generally dont think this rainwater would be an issue.

I'm not planning to use rainwater exclusively to water my plants. I am just wondering if I should avoid letting them get rained on altogether or is it a big deal if I let them get rained on occasionally.

i think he cut and paste from wiki... i won't search for it :P don't use rainwater.. you'll end up with more carcinogens and whatever else is in the air from industry potentiall thousands of miles away, lol, than filtered water. the logic that it is natural and healthy just doesn't track if you look at the potential imurities.

The pH of rainwater fluctuates, but most rainwater in the U.S. tends to be substantially lower than 8. Average pH of rainwater tends to run in the 5’s and 6’s. As CO2 levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, we can expect the pH of rainwater to become even more acidic, thus more acid rain. If you’re collecting rainwater in a 55-gallon drum, add your nutrients, then adjust the pH (using pH up or down) to optimal levels before watering your plants. Hope this helps! Happy growing!
