When to harvest?

leone
leonestarted grow question 4 years ago
Hi friends, Would you please help me in judging her status and estimating when to harvest? I've read a lot about growing and when to harvest, but in real life I'm not sure at all. I'm anxious about not being able to tell and harvest too early or too late. Thank you!

She's quite close I would say. Maybe another weekish . Best way for me is to use a Jewellers loop(they're very cheap) and look at the trichomes. I try to aim for all cloudy trichs with about 5 to 10 percent amber. For me that is the sweetspot . If you can't do that you want all or most of the orange hairs to curl inwards . I'd suggest letting them go longer than you think. As I can say from experience harvesting to early will just give you a spacey high . Which is a shame when you have spent months growing . Let them ripen up nicely with a good flush and you'll have some nice smoke on your hands. Happy growing 🌱

Wow, thank you all for so much feedback and great help! What I'm getting from your answers is that I should definitely let her go on for a bit before considering harvest, and that I should invest in a jeweller's loupe to see when it's time. In terms of effect I'd definitely go for not too much couch lock. I was fortunate enough to consume "Think Big" in the past and it was a pleasant, energizing and creative high, and I liked it very much. That's why I decided my first grow should be of this strain with a similar high in mind. For a more laid-back high I have some "Glue Gelato Auto" that friends of mine grew 😁 @HarbingerOfHarvests she actually slowed down last week and I thought "this is it", as her pistils started turning amber. But then she decided to grow new ones... 😊 The bigger fan leaves already died done and I removed them. Now the smaller ones in bud-neighborhood start to become yellowish too. @The8thChevron Considering your answer I think shouldn't wait for too long then, as I definitely aim for a more mindful, energetic effect. I will follow your suggestion to check on the trichomes' status. @spacecadet55 I just ordered a jeweller's loupe so that I can not only check but also admire her details 👍 @DBpF4nZA I will look out for them, as far as I can see with my naked eye right now, there aren't any amber trichomes just yet @Bloombuster you gave me a little shock 😂 I went to read Dutch Passion's description again, hoping you weren't right.. Luckily for me they claim "Harvest time is typically 13-14 weeks after germination". Phew 😅 @Smallgrow1 that is exactly what I read, too. But what if she's still growing new pistils? That's one of the reasons why I had to ask 🙈

I had read somewhere that you should harvest when 70% of the white hairs turn brown for the maximum thc but in today's age I'm not sure if my info is old reading

A good way to check is to get a jewelers loupe and check if the trichomes are milky or about 20% amber. Another way I decide if I don't see any amber trichomes is check when the trichomes fall over or looks bent and is milky. Hope this helps.

Well, you could harvest now for a mindful, energetic effect. If you want that full body relaxation effect, I would say you're probably looking at 10 more days. For the red hairs: 60‐75% is high THC, mind numbing effect; 75-90% is high cannabinoid, deadweight couchlock effect. You can go further and check the trichomes in a jeweler's loupe. About 20% amber trichomes gives you the strongest effect. Looks delicious, good luck!

I'd wait for pistil production to slow down.. That's a good indicator.. As well as presentation of deficiencies in foliage as she progresses farther along into flower.. you've got a week or more there at least.. She will turn mostly orange hair when she is ready and this is also when the amber comes on the buds. As the buds ripen and mature the pistils will stop being produced. The leaves will show burnt amber a lot sooner then the nug/flower material. The trichromes stand up.. They look like soldiers are attention.. And they will have a strong presence.
