12-12 vs, Autos

EXZELENS
EXZELENSstarted grow question 4 years ago
So, I am currently and always been growing autos, but I was wondering if I can get basically the same results with photoperiods under 12-12 from seed. If that´s possible, that would be wonderful since it would change the electricity cost to 2/3 and more strains available. Thanks!

it won't save you money though... if you run lights for 12 hours vs 18 and want same results, you need to provide 33% more light which will negate the 66% hours powering lights. one of the benefits of autos is not needing as intense light over 18+ hours. generally saves money on the lights, but electricity costs will be the roughyl the same relative to results. possibly some small % greater efficiency over more hours / less current i'd experiment a bit, but i'd wager some portion of 18/6 to start will result in same total time for a photoperiod. Maybe 1-2 weeks before mature enough to switch? might be strain dependent too. See if there are any differences in bloom development... if you can do 1-2 weeks at 18h and still finish in same total amount of weeks, might as well. easier on lights for those 2 weeks.

With photoperiods you can control the duration of the vegetative phase which is a big plus to me. You can experiment on growing techniques as you are the one deciding when it starts flowering (try doing a main-lining on an auto...😉). As you mentioned, there are also more strains available. I tend to find the photoperiod more potent too. If starting the seed from 12-12 is just to have it the quickest possible, I would not do it. It is better for the plant to go through a vegetative stage and get stronger, you will be rewarded with a better quality and stronger yields. I would anyway recommend to grow at least once a photoperiod, regardless of electricity costs.

I just got done trying this for shits n giggles with a blueberry strain, didn't end well. Grew a foot tall n Only got a couple grams off of it. If you have seeds to spare then why not experiment, you never know

I've seen some do alright but I think it depends on the strain, I personally haven't done it myself under lights but I did have a plant outside last year that I was breeding with and it had some seeds fall off it as it was finishing flowering. They sprouted about a week later and grew to about 25cm then started to flower, when they finished they were about 40cm tall and did fill out quite nicely, the days then were aprox 12hrs long and they were in full sun for the whole day.

I would say if you grow a photo 12-12 from seed your yield will be low 14-20 grams dry on average. On average an auto will give you 1.5-2 oz.

I prefer photoperiod strains much more as the rudelaris which all autos contain has almost no thc content, as they are crossed with this plant chances are 9 times out of 10 it won’t be as good although there are a few autos which come close to their photoperiod sister. Yield I think can be better as you can control the size of the plant better and choose when to initiate flowering. If time is your problem just grow SOG style and veg for a small amount of time. Happy growing buddy👍
