I have a system that does this called the autopot auto5 system after a plant is established it will feed from the bottom but you must top feed until the plants big enough to support bottom feeding if there are no roots down there yet the water or feed is not doing much use so its best to wait 3-4 weeks before bottom feeding. When your starting a plant only saturate around the base of a plant and do not run the medium through with water to create run off its just not needed yet and you could drown your young plant. when your plant is in veg and is alot larger with roots established all the way through the medium then you can saturate the whole medium but I would still only do that if the plant looks like it needs feed or the medium is bone dry and the plant is large. other times watering your plant until you see it come out the bottom is often too much in my opinion. hope this helps :)

I water from the top every time. Just pour it half way between the trunk and the edge of the pot. The medium will absorb and disperse it evenly over the next 20-30 minutes through capillary action.

Spray from the top - if water leaks through the sides of your pot, water outer edges of soil first, wait a while and then water the middle of the pot so the water follows path of less resistsnce down through the more dry substrate below stem.
