Would you remove the shell to help a seedling to fully germinate? The plant matter under the shell is usually very fragile and easy to contaminate. I have uploaded a picture as a good example in this diary.

I’ve done it lots. Spritz with water and let the membrane inside moisten up, then either remove carefully with your fingers or with tweezers. I’ve never had one die. I was advised it was because i wasnt planting the germinated seeds deep enough, so have been going a bit deeper so they friction of coming up through the soil removes the shell.
